2000 Tailgate door won't stay open

    Hi folks.

I just got myself a beautiful CRV from 2000.
I'm having a problem with the tailgate door. When I'm parked on the side of the road and the surface is not level (like most streets in Melbourne), the tailgate door won't stay open, which is a pain when you're trying to load it.
Is there a way to adjust the "stiffness" in the door or refilling the gas in the hydraulics?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks -Martin

Think you just need to replace the lift support strut. There are 2 on the glass and one on the actual door.

If you are refering to the top part. you need new struts.
If you want the lower Gate to stay open, there is a plastic tool that came with the vehicle to hold it. Check the owners manual for its location.

If you are opening the tailgate on any significant slope, it is too much for even a new support. My used CRV came with a little plastic tube about 10 inches long that you can slip over the support rod to hold it open on a slope. It was in by the jack. It took me a couple years to figure out what it was for. I'm sure you could make your own from a piece of plastic pipe by sawing a slot to slip over the rod.

Oh yea. Good call on that plastic support tool. I forgot all about that. I think it is with the tire iron wrench on mine.

My tailgate is pretty stiff and I have never needed it.

    Thanks guys!

That's excellent help, and fast too!

That little support tool is unfortunately missing but I'm sure I could fashion one myself.

    Thanks again, -Martin.
