    Water in spare tire well!!

Today I was changing the rear diff fluid on the wifes 2010 CRV EX. I had bought some extra crush washers and didnt want to lose them in the garage so I figured I would just keep them in the package and throw them in the spare tire well. When I lifted the cover I found it was nearly halfway full of water!!!! It appears to be coming in towards at the front of the well around the top. Mainly from the left side as it was freshly wet from driving in last nights rain. I showed my wife and she was livid! She hasnt been real happy with the quality of her 2010. Between the rusting rock chips, engine oil leak(minor), odd noises from the power mirrors and locks and faulty dome light and now this, we are leary of whats to come. We have had four CRV's now...a 2000, 2004, 2006 and our current 2010. Never had the first slightest issue with ANY of them. Lately she has been considering paying it off and keeping it or trading it for something else. Other than the issues, it is the best one we have owned with the improvements of this generation. Quieter, better handling and much more comfortable!

I guess to stay on this most recent issue, has anyone else out there had a tire well leak like this? It is just out of warranty at 38,000 so I dont know if the dealership is gonna give me any problem or not since this is an obvious factory defect. Cant remember the last time I was in down in there, if ever, but you can tell this has been going on for a lonng time.

Hopefully the dealer will cover the repair.

In addition to the tail-light-to-body gaskets, there might be an issue with the seam sealer used at the roof panels. Fits have have this issue (as well as other makes with big heavy hatchbacks).

From the water marks around the rim of the tire well it looks like something obviously did not get sealed at the factory. Ill try to get a picture up on here. For those who have a 2010 you may want to take a look at yours in case there was a run of these that weren't done correctly.

I just went to fill the air in my spare, and same thing in my 2007, there was 3" of water in there, and it wasnt there when I bought it in 2009. It seems to be coming from 3 areas, out of an overlap weld direct in the back, one in the front, and one on the left side. Problem is, there are no holes there, it is coming from up above behind the panels somewhere, and running down to where the inside superstructure is welded to the outside and there are open seams. It would do no good to caulk these, because then the water would fill up inside the inner and outer panels. Im pretty pissed about it, because through my father in laws research, this appears to be happening in many 2005 on up CRV's. Honda should have a recall and address this issue, as it appears to be from bad welds somewhere.

Maybe the problem is similar to the attached Service Bulletin.

Here are some pics. I hope they turn out...

In this pic you can see it is still wet in the left corner. We drove in rain over the weekend and its still wet.

There are water marks clear across the front here. I realize they are hard to see in the pic.

    Another pic of the area.

Here you can see water standing in the center of the spare tire rim.

I know its hard to see here but in this corner there is about 2 inches of ice where the water has frozen.

Thanks for posting that! The only thing is, is that applies to the 2011 model. Looking at those pics that could very well be the issue though since it seems like its coming from somewhere on the left side. I wonder if there is anything out there that applies to the 2010's?

We dropped it off tonight at the dealership so they could have their " leak specialist" take a look at it. Like I said earlier, this has obviously been going on probably since day one. Since our vehicle now has 38,000 miles, is it acceptable for me to expect them to cover this? I feel it is an obvious factory defect and I should not be liable at this point. What do you guys think?

Well...just an update. They did cover it. However, they also decided they wanted her CRV more than she did. She drove a new 2012 EXL with RES and decided to take that home. Its really nice and I just hope its a little better on the quality side.

Oh yeah....I also traded the F150 for a new 2011 Ridgeline while I was there! Love it!
