Engine and ATF Oil Capacity in Honda CRV 98

    Hi,

It will take 3 bottles of honda atf (3 litres)
It will take 3 cans of honda engine oil (3 litres)
If you put 4 bottles in either atf or engine it will cause leakage (thats what happened to me)
You may want to check the next day and top it off (both atf and engine)
It is better to have less oil rather than to overfill it which will cause leakage.

According to my 1998 CRV owner's manual, engine oil change without filter replacement = 3.5 liters, with filter change=3.8 liters. ATF change requires 2.9 liters replacement. Rear differential fluid change= 1.0 liter.

That is what I mean. It is three cans but less than four. So it is safer to put three cans in the shop and then drive home and top it off the next day. I once was changing oil in the shop and he put four cans and when I drove home it caused an oil leak.

did a seal get damaged or was it as simple as draining out some of the oil and the leak stopped?

The oil around the plugs could just be the valve cover spark plugs seals leaking. Pretty easy to replace.
If the oil is on the electrodes, then that is a different story.
An overfilled oil pan could be the result of the dipstick tube being loose so that when the dipstick is removed, the dipstick tube pulls up slightly and it makes it appear that the oil level is low. You add more oil and then when the dipstick is put back in, the tube is pushed down and then when the dipstick is pulled out again (tube didn't move this time) it shows way overfilled.
    Check other fluid levels.
If there is too much oil in the oil pan, immediately drain it down to the proper level or just do an oil change and then smell and look at the drained oil for any unusual smells or look.
