2006 CR-V Headlight Issue - Both Out at Once??

    Hello:

Have an issue with both headlights went out at the same time. High beams still work. All the fuses are good and the bulbs are new. Came across this thread that mentioned a burnt plug in the steering column could be the issue. I took a look under there but wasn't sure which plug.

Does anyone have any tips? Here are some pics of what I am looking at:

Really don't want to pay someone to fix this if I can do it myself. I unplugged a couple of the plugs but didnt see any damage/melting.

See post #6 & #8 in this thread Headlight issue There is a connector under the steering column which can be accessed by removing 2-3 screws and a cover. It is a small white colored connecter. Look for signs of overheating or corrosion clean it to verify the solution and get a new connecter for it.

I saw that post on the headlight issue. Apparently since then there was a recall on CRV's from 2002 - 2004 for this issue. Mine is a 2006. I have been unable to find any plugs that are melted so I think it may be something else. I checked the headlight fuses under the hood and they were fine. Both headlights went out at the same time so it couldn't be the bulbs (I replaced them last year). Are there other fuses that could affect both headlights at once?

My bad, I did not follow the thread to see if the OP had resolved his issue with the 2006. When you changed bulbs did you replace with HID? I see there has been trouble there with multiple failures.
There is a solenoid that operates to power the low beams.
There is a small possibility that both are burnt out. Have you tried a known good replacement? When you replaced the bulbs were they untouched on the glass surface? Any type of pollutant on them will cause over heating and early demise.

I replaced them with Sylvania Silverstar. Not sure if those are HID or something else.

They may be the problem then. If you have daylight running lights you can expect 6 months from them according to Sylvania. I would try new Piia or OEMs.

Mine does not have daytime running lights. Not sure how it could be the bulbs when they went out at the exact same time.

If you witnessed them go out at exactly the same time I would expect something other than bulbs too, but when one goes there is a voltage spike that may either weaken the other or take it out almost simultaneously also.

Looking at this schematic I can only see two possible fault locations for the low beams, if the high beams are still working, baring physical damage to the wiring. 1. The bulb (low beam element), or 2. the ground from the low beam. It would appear that there are two distinct grounds, one for each low beam. It would be unlikely that both grounds would be lost. This is what keeps leading me to the bulbs.

A typical failure mode of Halogen lamps is that when one burns out, it sends a surge to the other one that burns it out.

So, in the spirit of KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) I'd replace both bulbs with new and take it from there.

For the long term, check your battery voltage. If the battery is weak or has a bad cell, the voltage WILL spike and cause burn-outs.

Another durable bulb is the Osram brand.
