    Whining noise 2003 honda crv

    Hi guys,
first time poster, long time researcher.
I have a 2003 Honda CRV EX-L with 206,000 kilometers on it. automatic transmission.. There is a whining noise when parked, and when i'm driving. It is there in first gear, second gear, and then for third and fourth it goes away. I have done a transmission oil change. Someone recommend i put in Lucas treatment. but i didn't because i wasn't sure. I also notice that the whine goes up and down say when the wipers are on, or putting up or down the windows. Also when i trun the steering wheel while parked, the whine goo EEEE. I'm not sure if it alternator, transmission or steering pump. I bought the CRV with 160,000km on it, and it had the whine than as well. It has increased slightly, but not to much. I have driven other peoples V's same year etc, and its not a common whine.

My 03 also has a very subtle whine. No clue what it is but it's not always there.

I just bought an '03 yesterday and it also has a whine. My daughter has an '02 and the whine in hers is louder than the '03. We also bought a new '12 last winter and it also has a whine but not very loud, so I decided it just goes along with driving a Honda! All of them only make the noise when driving however.

Mine too but after a few KM it disappear. Always thought it was the cold brake plate rubbing on the rotor.

I would think that one whine is coming from the alternator (wipers and windows) and the other whine is the power steering pump when turning the steering wheel.
Since you can hear the whining while the car is in park, you should be able to locate the noise if if is coming from the alternator. By placing a solid stick, rod, etc against the alternator and putting the other end to your ear, you will be able to hear the whine, if it is the alternator. Moving parts are dangerous, so be careful!!!!!!!

When was your serpentine belt changed last? It makes a terrible whine when it gets old and deteriorated. It's particularly noticeable at start up, idle, and slow speeds. As for the noise fluctuating with the windows, wipers, and steering, my hypothesis is that, since the serpentine belt drives the power steering pump and the alternator, the more load you put it, the more friction it puts on the old belt which causes it to slip and whine. The belt is basically screaming "change me" with a screeeeech. That's my guess anyhow.

It could be the belt tensioner pulley .
