fingers-crossed we will catch a break soon.
CRV crew.
I'm out. I got fed up and traded it in with full disclosure.... yes, I took a bath on the trade, but I guess that's the only half way honest way to get rid of a turkey like this. Thank you all for your help, even though it didn't work out for me. BTW. after owning 3 hondas, 2 prior to this one I am done with the brand. My problem is that I drive 5+ year old cars with no warranty and the honda dealer in my town flat out sucks. Not only do they overcharge, but they don't seem to be worth a crap in the service dept. Independent mechanics don't have access to the latest info, not that this would help our problem here. Granted, I live in a remote area of the Western US with limited access to alternatives, but this experience has taught me not to buy a car that cannot be fixed by more than one mechanic (or no mechanics) in your local area. Much like there aren't many BMW's around here. All this said, I wish you all good luck with figuring out this problem, I hope you catch a break. Varocketry, if you want this used throttle body I will let it go cheap, please PM me and we can work out a deal. I'll stay active on the forum out of sheer curiosity, in the mean time I will enjoy my used-new-to-me toyota tundra, and cry every time I go to the gas station.
same problem here idle hang up in between shifts and when i push the clutch my idle goes up? WTF!!! 2003 crv 5 speed. When i start it if its cold the idle goes to at least 2500 rpm and wont drop until i let out the clutch what is this about?
Welcome to the party. Are you the original owner, how long have you noticed the behavior? Reason I ask is I bought used and it was already doing this at 120,000 miles. I am trying to establish if this is a engineered (ridiculous) or learned behavior.
I tried something new this morning. When the vehicle was cold, I cycled through the gears quickly up to third, then put the transmission into neutral and let out the clutch. The idle dropped to where I would expect it to be (around 1500 rpm as the engine was still cold).
I am wondering if there is some sort of switch/sensor on the manual transmission that is involved here?
I am the second owner and i know the original owner, if i remember right i asked him about the high idle when i test drove it and he said it has been doing it for a few years. It has 173,000 miles on it. I bought it with 172,000 miles. while cold in between shifts its going up to 2500 rpm, while warm it goes about 200 rpm past where it was before i push the clutch in. It cause me to buck in almost all gears except 4th and 5th. Now i try to wait about 4-5 seconds in between shifts to let the idle come down and i can put it in gear and drive without bucking. Also while cold pushing the clutch in it goes to 2500 and its hard to put into first gear because the rpm is so high.
What about the clutch pedal position switch going bad? Could this cause my idle not to drop when i push my clutch in?
I definitely think it is some sort of sensor issue. The key ingredients to it hanging, for me, have been:
2 -> 3 shift
20 mph
2,500 rpms
If I clutch and shift to neutral at these numbers I can coast down the road for at least 15 seconds (probably more, I just have not tried) and the engine will freewheel at 2,500 until I come to a complete stop for 3 seconds.
1 -> 2 is fine, 3 -> 4 is fine. Run the RPMs and speed up to 3,200 and 30 mph+ for the 2 -> 3 shift and it is fine. Hard blip the throttle when it is freewheeling (up to 3,500 while in neutral) and it will fall off.
I think by short-shifting you are changing the parameters in the same way I am, and yielding the same results. Apparently the car and my shift points just do not agree with one another.
I contacted a service tech that was recommended to me in regards to an ECU reflash. My research told me it could be done on the 2002, he said no, that started in 03 with programmable ECUs. Despited how common this problem seems to be, I got "I have never heard of that ever happening and I have been doing this a long time". I have a hard time believing that but nothing was to be gained debating it. His best recommendation was a new TPS which we have already covered here with the TB replacement above.
Back to square one.
I ordered a new TPS for sh*ts and giggles, will give it a try.

Besides the iac and tps what else would control the idle or rpm? coolant temp sensor? maybe something else?
