I thought someone had already tried that? If not, my bad.

Maybe a temp sensor? Or is there sensor related to the clutch or transmission that feeds to the ECU?

TPS is unavailable, from Honda or second party manufacturers. Guess I am living with it for awhile.

    vtec issue

I had an 02 5 speed from new to 45000 miles, no problem.
I bought a 03 with 123K miles on it. In the first month of ownership, I had a few problems. It stalled at the first stoplight I came to every morning, ONE time, and would throw a code for random misfires. It was tight exhaust valves. Don't let anyone tell you that the second generation V's don't need valve adjustments. The fact that it stalled indicates to me that I did NOT have a wacky idle BEFORE I did the valve adjustment.

Well, I did the valve adjustment and screwed up. I was turning the engine with a large ratchet wrench on the CAMshaft bolt. I should have been turning it on the crank but NOOOoooooo. The ratched was defective and skipped. I became convinced that I skipped the timing chain. I removed the front cover of the engine and reset the timing chain and honestly, the first TWO times I did it I didn't get it right and it threw a code. Third time I put it back together, it didn't throw a code. But now I have this weird high idle when cold, perfectly described in previous threads. I found this thread using a search engine...only to realize that I am still a member from when I owned my first V? So here I am.

While going through these trials and tribulations, the crankcase was open to entry of contaminants, and the vtc oil control solenoid valve on the front engine cover was removed and replaced several times. There is a chance that I could have damaged the valve or maybe a piece of dirt or old silicone sealant got in the crankcase and plugged something up. I've changed the oil and filter twice to no avail.

The VTEC actuator is located on the end of the camshaft. I think I damaged it. To check it, you must remove the camshaft. I am not ready to do that yet. Too cold and I need the V.

I never knew the VTEC solenoid valve assembly, that bolts on to the cylinder head, even EXISTED! I will have to remove and check it in the near future. IF this isn't misleading information. I never saw mention of this particular part in the service manual.

I had tried cleaning, and then replacing the IACV to no avail. Put the OEM one back in.

If someone solves this issue, PLEASE let us know. I will do the same.

    Joe

Welcome and thanks for sharing your experience on this common issue. So your idle was fine until you did your inaccurate valve adjustment?

Chasing down another possibility having to do with the VTEC train of thought. Did the VTC oil control solenoid and VTEC solenoid valve assembly already (page 4 of this thread). All the screens and oil channels were spotless on both. Pulled the $11 VTC strainer assembly and found this.

Changed it out, reset the ECM and did an idle learn. Things improved slightly. Not to start an oil debate, but am switching from Pennzoil Platinum to Ultra for the extra detergent pack. As this problem develops over the long term for most of us here, I think it might have to do with a varnish/sludge build-up. Perhaps a little arthroscopic surgery over the next year will break some of it down. Swapping out the strainer on a vehicle with a less advanced condition than mine my yield results. Be advised, the part is cheap but the install is a little pain. The drive belt and PS pump have to be relocated, and tensioner removed to gain access.

    Will update, of course.

Hi all, just another V owner with the exact same issues that keep getting described. Just wondering if there have been any successes that haven't been posted?

The only success I have had so far is running the RPMs to about 3,500 before shifting to third. I drops pretty quickly that way, but that hardly solves the problem. I am trying a couple cycles of Kreen right now to test an oil sludge or varnish buildup theory. It took 10 years to develop this problem, might take some time to clean things up. Ran the additive for the last 1,000 miles of previous oil life, changed it and filter, will be adding another dose when I hit 2k on this crankcase fill.

Seafoam, for 2 oil change cycles sure cleans things up........It is not just a fuel treatment, follow the directions on the can.

I think I might have asked this before (sorry if I have), but are the 2nd Gen CRV's with Autotragic transmissions not having this same behavior? If so, why would that be?
