This is contrary to a large number of oil analysis that I have seen posted. It is also contrary to the recommendations of many car manufacturers. The Maintenance Minder on my wife's CR-V computes, based on her driving habits, oil change intervals of around 10k miles. I don't believe in a conspiracy to try to get me to change my oil less often so that the engine wears out and I have to buy a new car.

"Feeling" the oil is no more objective than "looking" at the oil. I will repeat: the only objective way to determine the life of your oil is to have an analysis done. Major oil companies would tell you to change your oil every 3k miles so they can sell more oil, but, this is not even the case. Mobil suggests oil changes at 15k miles with Mobil 1 EP. Other makers of synthetic oil, such as Amsoil, recommend 25k oil changes. You are the only one suggesting frequent oil changes and you have no evidence to support your opinion.

I can undoubtedly say that major oil companies, including Phillips 66 the OEM manufacturer in the US for Honda, do NOT recommend oil changes every 3,000 miles on current models (or anything over the last decade and longer). The recommendation is to follow OEM guidelines, which in the case of a current CR-V would be when the maintenance minder indicates service is due. Today's oils, and automobile engines, aren't those of 20, 15, 10 or even 5 years ago.

There are heavy diesel engines on the road that are serviced at 45,000 mile intervals with NO adverse wear. It is important to follow specifications - viscosity, quality and interval. Anything beyond that is a waste of time, money and valuable resources.

There's about 1.3 billion gallons of used oil generated in the U.S. each year. Ten percent goes into a re-refining process.
The majority of that used oil is collected and sold as a combustible fuel, mainly used in power plants or industrial boilers.
Engine and oil technology is a lot more advanced than 20 years ago, there is no need to still be changing at 3000 miles, otherwise all these these step forwards are in fact a step backwards.
However people spend their money as they wish and if they are happy paying out for unnecessary oil changes, then it is out of their choice.

I remember, long ago when I worked at Inland Steel Co., that used motor oil was injected into the blast furnace to augment the coke fuel.

I would really suggest the reader of this thread go to:

    Bobistheoilguy.com

It's an Internet resource full of information on oil, oil change intervals, and lubricants.

I do my conventional oil changes at 5k miles per severe service. The last time I opened my valve cover at approximately 170k miles, the top of the engine was clean with minimal varnish.
