    I'm pretty sure all Honda's, and any vehicle with mechanical lifters needs a periodic valve lash check. I have an 05 Corolla, they call for valve clearance inspection every 60,000 miles. Unless Toyota has since switched to hydraulic lifters (like GM), they will still need an occasional inspection/adjustment. I'm not surprised by the 176k with no problems on a Corolla, mine's been more reliable than the 3 Honda's I've owned (which have also been very reliable).

    The worst-case is if the valves are QUIET because they are TOO TIGHT. That results in head-work. $$$

    The Gen1 B-series engines needed valve adjustments the most. In the Rest of the World, Honda said to adjust them every 30K miles. In the USA, after being dinged in reviews for the cost of maintenance, the adjustment interval was changed to 105 - 110K miles. WRONG!

    The K-24 (Gen 2 & 3) engines have timing chains and roller cam followers. Most hold up well (there were a few 03 engines that suffered from cam galling as did some Toyota Celica engines). That was from improper hardening of the cams, though.

    +++++++++++

    Here's my scorecard:

    75 Accord, 81 Civic, '88 Integra, 90 Accord: Honda said adjust every 6K miles . I didn't ever need any cylinder head work on those.

    99 Acura V-6, '06 CR-V, valves found to be in spec at half- spec. (~60K miles) The Acura's didn't need ANY adjusted the second time around.

    The '07 Fit had MOST of it's valves out-of-spec when checked at 60K miles. Many owners report this.

    Much later--Feb-- 2013, but we have a '06 CR-V with 84,000K --52,000 miles on it, getting a little click that seems to be valve noise. Not at home now, but I'll check it later and the info. that you linked to is very helpful--Thanks a lot---Harv

    Be aware that fuel injectors will sometimes emit an audible "click" as they work.

    Fuel Injector Cleaner or a SEAFOAM treatment might help if it is that. (Search)
