Saw a thread on remote starters and had a question. So I though instead of hijacking that thread I'd start my own.
I have a remote starter in my 07 Monte Carlo and have always liked having it. I thought about this for my 2015 CVR but from what I'm reading vehicles using synthetic oil don't really need a warm up time of more than 30 seconds. So if this is true is there really any reason to get a remote starter?
Do your wallet and your new CRV a favour and don't get one. Idling is bad for modern engines. It'll warm up, or produce cool air, after just a few minutes of driving. Did you read in the owner's manual that you have to let the engine warm up? Of course not.
I am in South Dakota and would never own a car without long-range aftermarket remote start. I travel a lot and our airport has outdoor parking lots (as does the business I work for). I fire that puppy up when we touch down and windows are defrosted and cabin warm by the time I get to the car. I don't do it to save wear and tear on the engine - it is a convenience feature. And it is a feature I would have and use even if it shortens the life of the car (really doubt that it does)
Has anyone in this thread ever tried to sit in a car that has been outside in -40F windchill conditions for several days and wait for it to warm up? Are we really debating the usefulness of remote start?
My situation isn't that extreme. But when I get in my car in the morning I'm not so worried about comfort as I am about the windows being defrosted and ready to pull out of the driveway. The most extreme winter temperature for me would be -5 Fahrenheit but more averaged at +14 Fahrenheit in the dead of winter. Enough that the windows would be iced and frosted up. As I said its been a great convenience in my other car. I usually try to run it no longer than 10 minutes at the longest. It has an auto shutoff at about 15 minutes or when it gets to temperature.
I have a remote start in my 09 CRV, first time I ever had one and living in Wisconsin in winter, it proved its usefulness quickly. I wouldn't have given it a second thought as I was used to going out to start the car but since it was there.... Well its a hit, my next vehicle will have one too, in fact we put one in the wife's car this fall too.
The first one I had was installed in a 92 GM SUV when new, I used the starter all of the time summer/winter, I sold the vehicle a couple of years ago with 192k miles (starter still working), being a GM product, I can't say the engine life was shortened at all.
They go in everything I own.
They will for me as well unless this global warming the politicians keep yammering about actually happens. Last winter we went several weeks without so much as a 0 degree day, we didn't break freezing for the better part of 3 months. Nice to take a little of that chill off before getting in the car
I would say, not everyone's climate is the same... I installed remote starter on my CRV because of the extreme cold weather the DMV "could" get... I've always hated getting in to a freezing cold car and waiting for the heat to generate while shivering so much it affects my ability to drive.
