Identify This Noise? 2003 UK Spec CR-V 2.0

Hello all, I have a UK 2003 CR-V with the 2.0 Civic engine.

For some time now my car has been making a high pitch squeeling sort of a noise. Its mostly there at idle, but when revved or on motion tends to stop.

Is this a familiar noise to anyone?

Sounds belt related, but hoping not some sort of bearing.

Sorry its not v loud I recorded it on my iPhone out of the window from the passenger side(!)

I'm on crutches right now due to a broken leg, so can't check anything, that anyone suggests, but just thought someone else might have had this noise?

    thanks

    David (Leeds, UK)

    david,

It does sound like a belt tensioner or bearing on one of the components. It was sort of hard to tell without being there, but I would stand at the front of your vehicle with the hood up (bonnett) and listen to the location. It should be pretty easy to tell if it's that loud in the passenger compartment.

Sounds like the accessory belt. Either the belt is old or the tension is wrong (probably too loose). With the engine off, push on the accessory belt with your finger. It should deflect about 3 mm or so. If it deflects more than that it is too loose (you should be able to do this on your crutches by the way). If the belt looks old or worn, then it should be replaced. Do you know when it was replaced last?

Thanks for this, the weather is appalling here right now, so hobbling out to the car in my crutches is a no no (broken elbows and broken leg, so forgive me inactivity).

I have the car booked in at the garage for a recall next week, and have asked them to identify it, hoping that they don't charge me for the privilage of finding out what the noise is!

    thanks

    David

You're welcome David, (my name as well!). It definitely sounds like the accessory belt, they will probably recommend replacing it.
