Just bought a used 98 and it looks great - except the clock. The numbers are a dark orange, which makes it nearly impossible to see in daytime. Anyone out there tried replacing this with something compatable and more visible? Thanks!

Our 99 clock works just fine in daylight - it doesn't do so well in daylight with the headlights on tho. Then, it is almost impossible to see. It works great at night.

Neither Majestic (http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/) nor Showcase (http://www.showcasehonda.com/) nor eBay had one at the time, but they're worth a check. Local auto salvage may be a better and cheaper bet.

The most common cause of the clock not working on a first gen is the terrible cold solder joints that were used. Any half-competent person with a soldering gun should be able to spot the bad joints and resolder them. Well worth the effort over trying to find a salvage yard one.

awesome thanks for the tip!!! I shall check out the clock and see if it looks like I can solder it to fix it, hey can't screw it up any more right? ; )

Thanks for your help, one and all. I'm also wondering if there's any way to replace the clock with a small analog clock that would fit into the same spot on the dash. And it'd be great if it would illuminate at night. The dark orange light of the digital clock just doesn't make a lot of sense.
I have a 98 CR-V AWD. Have seen several posts about the clock going bad due to bad soder joints. I can solder, but I cat figure out how to get the clock out of the dash. I read in another forum that you have to completely remove the dash to get it out. That seems kind of ectreem, there has to be an easier way? Any one have any suggestions on this?
Thanks for your reply

The clock is screwed to the vent garnish (No. 7 below), which is held in place with metal clips (No. 14). Though the garnish is easily removed -- I freed it with a hook made from a coat hanger -- proper reinstallation of the clips must be done from behind the instrument panel, which means removing it. I forewent the clips and resecured the garnish with small dabs of Quakehold (a removeable adhesive putty), which does the job -- but if anyone has an easier way to do the clips, I'd love to know...

I have a 00 Honda and for the last 5 years its been fine but yesturday - when I was out and about - my clock light was black. Nothing - turning the dash lights or anything could get it back on. The manual doesn't even list a breaker part (wrong word I know). Any advice before I ask around?

This is a common problem.....unfortunately unlike other Honda's the clock bulb is not replacable...you have to replace the whole clock.

The clock in my '99 Honda did this...I guess about a year ago. I haven't bothered to fix it. That's the worse thing I've had happen so far...knock on wood! I think I remember reading about poor soldering on some of the older Honda clocks causing a loose connection...you'd have to take the whole dash apart to fix it...something to that effect.
Finally got a new battery put in...I was still running on the original one (129,000 miles) YIKES!

The most likely thing to happen with the clock is that the original, weak, cold-solder joints need repairing. If you are handy with a soldering gun, you can probably repair it. I know mine is soon to go out since it no longer comes on when the temp is below 30 degrees or so. After the car warms up some, it comes back on.
Hello - my dash clock has just recently begun to turn itself off (ie remains dark, so you can't see what time it is) or not come on at all. If I push around the face of the clock, it will come back on. It still keeps time.
Has anyone experienced something like this? I have not been able to find anything in the forum search.
I did just have a new radio/cd player installed, but that has been several months ago. This clock issue has just started happening. Any thoughts before I have it looked at?
Thanks. 2001 CRV Manual LX 4WD.

Checked all the fuses, and all is good, all the other lights and interior electronics are working fine...I have the manual and it doesn't show a specific fuse that is attached to the clock...
Please help...
Thanks in advance,

common problem, they always break, it's a bad solder. There is a guy on ebay that fixs them for like $20 or something. New replacements are hundreds of dollars!

Illegal is right it is not a fuse problem just a bad connection for the wires this has happened to my V also but I just look at my radio clock or my cell phone for the time.
Hi,
The problem with the clock is very common. It is broken solder joints on some of the resistors. I fixed mine very easily and it was free. The guy on ebay is doing exactly what I did. I apologize that I don't have pictures I already fixed it and don't want to pull it out to take pictures. I will try to give a good description.
First, you will need to remove the clock. DO NOT try to remove just the clock. The clock assembly is screwed into the panel that has two air conditioning vents. So you will need to pry out the vents and which includes the clock assembly. Use a plastic pry tool or a screw driver wrapped in something so it doesn't damage the panel. I found it easiest to start at the bottom. There are snap clips that hold it in place.
Second, seperate the clock assembly from the panel. Be careful not to lose the push buttons and the rubber caps on the push button ends. There should be 3 of each. I did this at night in my car with just a flash light. I was lucky. I am pretty sure they won't sell you just those. So if you lose those then you will be buying a new $200 clock from Honda. I think there are only two screws that hold this assembly. It is basically a box that has some snap tabs that hold the PC board which has the LCD on it.
Third, carefully pry open the plastic tabs and seperate the two box halves. Inside you should see the board that holds the PCB.
Fourth, there are tabs hold the PC board in place. Pry one side and carefully remove the board.
Now on the LCD side there are a surface mount resistors. They are basically little rectangular boxes. What happens is the solder between the end of the resistor and the board cracks and breaks the circuit. I think there are 3. 2 of them are easy to get to but the third was under the LCD and my soldering iron couldn't reach it without hitting other items so I was worried about ruining the other things. So here is what I did.
Use a soldering iron to heat up the end of the resistor and the solder pad on the board on each side of the resistor. This won't take much time so don't over do it. Do one side let it cool and do the other. I added some solder on each one so that this won't happen again. Do this for each of the resistors you can get to. Essentially you are just re-flowing the solder and adding some to keep it from happening again.
Now I had to work on the hard to get to resistor. The LCD has several pins that hold it to the board and complete the various circuits. On the top edge of the LCD there are a bunch of pins. On the bottom edge there are 4. Get some solder wick (radio shack or electronics store) and place it over each fo the 4 holes on the bottom edge on the under side of the board. Put your soldering iron on the wich material while pressing it on the solder over each hole. This should wich the solder out of the hole.
Two of the pins are bent to hold the LCD in place during soldering. Carefully straighten these and the bottom edge of the LCD should move freely. Lift the bottom edge out far enough to gain access to the resistor underneath. My wife was kind enough to hold this for me. Be careful not to stress the pins on the other side or push the capacitor off that is along the top edge. It is a big can looking thing. Re-solder the resistor and then put the pins back in the holes. Bend the two that were bent before and then solder each of the pins.
Put the assembly back together and give it a try. You can test it before re-assembly, Just plug it in. Just make sure you put it in the correct way. When the board is out of the box the 4 connector pins don't have anything to show which way they connect. So just check that first.
Mine works perfectly now.
Let me know if you have questions.

Hi, new to the forum, this looks like a great site.
A month ago I bought my pal's mom's '00 CR-V. I've owned many Honda motorcycles, but this is my 1st Honda car. It looks like a pretty nice example. Anyhow, the in-dash clock quit working almost immediately. It doesn't seem to have its own fuse, and none of the others are blown. There are no obvious fasteners anywhere near it to allow access for checking or replacing it. I'm mechanically inclined, but I'm not excited about tearing into the dashboard. Is failure of this part common? Is there an easy trick for access/replacement? If it's really difficult, I'll just go down to Schucks and get a cheapie that I can glue right on top of the old one.

do you still have the stock radio? mine went out once i just forget what i had to do, i could of swore it had a dedicated fuse
It's probably has a bad solder. This was a common problem. There's someone on E-bay that will fix for about $15. Unless you can fix it yourself. It's easy to get out.

A quick google search brought up a few posts on other forums about repairing the CRV clock.
I am hesistant to post what i found since this may or may not be a DIY depending on a persons skill level. But there is info on the net about repairing them.
I will post one picture i have of the clock taken apart.
That is probably what the guy on Ebay is fixing. Mine also was not working, I sent it to him and it's been working ever since. It was worth $15 to try. And the guy will refund your money if he can't fix the clock.

Thanks for the tips and info. I know I can get the clock out now that I've seen the diagram. No way would I try to fix the clock on my own, though - I don't know jack about electrical stuff (or maybe I know just enough to know what to leave alone! :)). I have a good buddy who's really great w/electronics. He's the guy who sold me the car and he's fixed all sorts of similar things for me in the past. But just in case he can't tackle it, can someone please supply a link to the e-bay guy?
GTCB-chris, it still does have the OEM radio/cassette player and it works fine.
Actually there are several options here: The first 5 on the list.

okay, just makin sure, because when i put a new radio in mine the clock quit
Looked the fuses up that are connected to the clock. There's the back-up fuse in the relay box, but if it was blown your radio would also not work. And then in the fuse box, #25, if it's blown you would not have power locks and the guage assembly would be out also along with the clock. But the clock does not have it's own fuse.

can anybody post a link to an explanation of how to fix the clock?
I'd rather not pay a guy to repair it, if all i have to do is sodder some wire.
It's so annoying that this clock doesn't work!

Google search "CRV clock repair" and it should pull up a few different sites with the repair procedure.
I found 5 in less than five minutes when i looked.

Been fixing up my Honda CRV and the clock has not worked since i have owned it this year. I was wondering how easy this will be to remove and have a look at, and if anyone knows any common issues with this.

I own 2 01's and the clock in each died at approx 120 - 125 miles. Posts show the bad solder as the culprit. After learning that removal was o.k. but reinstallation a pain, I simply decided to live without the clock.
For a time, a thump directed to the dash above the clock would allow the digital numbers to show, but that "fix" didn't last too long. Oddly, the clocks continued to keep time. They probably still do, but I questioned whether the cost and time of dash work was worth having a clock. I use my wristwatch instead. OK, call me cheap.
