Hello all,
Today was a scary day. I left point A for point B, not realizing I was pretty low on gas. By the time I reached point B... the gas signal was on, and the RANGE I had left was at 4 miles.
Anyone know what potential problems there would be if the gas tank ran dry? Also, how accurate is the meter? does it really mean I have 4 miles more to drive before I would run out of gas? What is the lowest people have gone?
thanks!

You probably had several gallons left. How much gas did you put in when you filled the tank? The tank holds 15.3 gallons.
We were down this road on another thread a week or so ago. 2RedV has a very dim view of the miles left indicator, calling them amusement pieces which cracked me up. The consensus then was that the indicator has a lawyerly inspired error placed in it to frighten the driver into getting gas sooner than later.
Honda has a NOTICE on page 69 of the owners manual:
"Avoid driving with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of fuel could cause the engine to misfire, damage the catalytic converter."
Take that for what you will. Although I don't lie awake at night worring about running out of gas.

Dead CAT, heck.
Here's what happens when John Doe runs out of gas.
Car runs out of fuel.
Driver manages to pull over to side of road.
Driver leaves key in ON position for several minutes or longer because engine isn't running.
Fuel pump continues to try and pump non-existent fuel and BURNS ITSELF UP because the fuel is what keeps the pump cool.
My couple of pennies worth.

I never thought about the fuel pump but your right, you do want to get the ignition off. Fortunately I only ran out of gas once back in the day before fuel injection.
