Has anyone heard of an issue with burnt exhaust values with 1st Gen CR-Vs?

My mechanic tells me that burnt exhaust values seems to be a more common occurrence in older car engines since the introduction of alcohol in gas.

Any thoughts on this subject?

Upton-CRVYou ARE kidding, right? Do a SEARCH for burnt valves.

This is the biggest issue with the 1st gen V's. HOWEVER, it is due to a lack of maintenance, by the owners (and Honda's fault for lying about the adjustment interval).

The same engine, sold in Europe, had mandatory 30,000 mile valve adjustment intervals. The Europeans don't report on having issues....

If the V you are looking at buying does not come with service records showing any valve adjustments and the mileage is over approx 80,000, DO NOT BUY IT unless you get a SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNT. Otherwise, you may be getting a car that someone else already knows has a valve issue and it could cost you plenty.

These engines do not have valves that "get noisy and loose". They become quieter than they should and that is why the owner's ignore the symptoms. One major symptom is stalling, when the engine is cold, usually at the first stop you come to.

No I am not kidding. Did not know that it was such a well documented concern.

I have two 2001 CR-Vs (63K and 57K). Based on your response and the internet literature I read this afternoon it looks like both should be have the valves inspected.

Upton-CRVIf you don't do it yourself, ask for the before and after readings to be provided to you. That way, you know they probably did the adjustment (unless you watch).

The intake valves will probably be fine. It is the exhaust valves that tend to tighten. Post your results.
