I have seen that there are a lot of different thoughts on Honda care warranties here on the forum. But if you are thinking about getting one I thought I would share the following:

I just picked up my new CR-V Saturday; I keep a car for 10 years or more so I felt I would do well to look in to these warranties. I noted on the forum that there were dealers selling them on the internet.I looked at a number of web sites. I called Hondas extended warranty department. They told me these were valid Honda care programs. They said the warranties were retail items for the dealerships.
When in the finance office while buying our CR-V I ask about the 8 year 120000 mile warranty they said they would sell it to me for $2000. I said no and I gave the dealership a chance to mach the price I could buy one for on the internet. $989. They told me they did not think I could buy it for that. I showed them on the computer. They would not even try to mach it. Reconfirming, today, that it was a real Honda Care warranty I bought the warranty I wanted for the internet price. For me it was cheap insurance for 5 years after the base warranty was gone .The following site offers a large selection of Honda care warranties at different prices based on the cars mileage. ( www.hondawarranty.com), If you are thinking about a extended warranty it may save you some money. I am not recommending an extended warranty. I just chose to get one. I thought I would share that you really can buy them 50% off what some dealers try and sell them for.

Residents of Florida can not buy a Honda Warranty out of state. It is illegal.

I purchased an 8 year 120K mile from the internet also for almost $1000 less than my dealer wanted which worked out to roughly 1/2 price or 50% off. Opinions on the wisdom of buying the warranties vary. I am not sure that it is a wise use of your money, but like Carvingbarn I chose to get one for the peace of mind. I don't think there is a right answer for everyone to the question, should I buy an extended warranty. I would make several suggestions. 1. Only buy a genuine Honda Care Warranty. Do not buy third party warranties. 2. Only buy the long term warranties. Avoid the short term bumper to bumper warranties. If I was only going to keep my car for 5 or 6 years, I would not bother with the extended warranty.

Another suggestion is like Carvingbarn, check out the warranties before you buy, print the internet page and take it with you. After you have made your deal, give the dealer a chance to match your price. Don't do it before the deal. The price of the warranty should not be a bargaining chip because you are guaranteed the price on the internet, thus the dealer is not giving you anything that you can't get elsewhere. So don't let it become part of the bargained price that you are paying for the car.

The one thing to remember about warranties is that they expire. If you don't buy one, presuming that you don't get hit with a large repair, you still have your money that you would have spent on the warranty available for repairs or a down payment after the warranty expires. Honda is betting that your car is going to make it through the warranty period and I don't think they lose too much money on that bet.

Myself, I sat and worried until I bought the warranty, and other than writing about it on this forum, I haven't thought about it much since. So it is a personal decision that no one else can make for you. One thing I am sure of, all the people who will tell you not to waste your money on an extended warranty won't pitch in and help you with your repair payments. So decide for yourself.

Last night I asked the finance guy at the dealership I bought my CR-V from for a price on the extended warranty. It was $400 more than what I found on the internet. I told him this and asked him if he could match the internet price. His response was "I can't sell a warranty below cost." I told him that I would have to look elsewhere and he said "okay" and hung up the phone on me.

I think that's BS. If I decide to get one I'll get it from Sarcucci (sp?) or Bernardi's.

They would rather not sell it at all than to cut the price! It is amazing! I don't know if Honda has different pricing for volume sales. Maybe if you sell 100 warranties a month they give a better price to the dealer, but I doubt it. The dealer probably does not want word getting around that they sold you a warranty for a discount price.

This is another example of the power of the Internet bringing some light of day to the mysterious world of car dealerships to the common person. They have to hate it!

Joining this forum saved me almost $1000 bucks on my warranty. Well actually I should say that it got me a warranty because I wasn't going to pay $2 grand for a warranty. I had bought the car before I knew about this forum. I asked the dealer about an extended warranty, they showed me all the options and it worked out to $1970 for 8 year 120 K. I said I can't afford that and he said OK, and we moved on to the next item. No mention of being able to cut the price, they didn't even try to sell it to me. I just drove out without a warranty. Then I find out on this forum that I can buy one for less than $1000. These kinds of antics puts the frost on my keester.
