Most people don't realize it, but sport utility vehicles were very common and popular as far back as the 1950s and '60s. But they were called station wagons back then.

Don't scoff. SUVs may look more macho than conventional station wagons, and some are even more rugged. But despite their tall stances and brawny appearances, SUVs are just station wagons dressed in jeans, a T-shirt, and hiking shoes rather than khakis, an Oxford shirt and leather loafers.

The Honda CR-V I recently tested is a perfect case in point. The CR-V has been one of America's favorite compact SUVs since it debuted about 10 years ago. A brilliant redesign for 2007 combined with the recent trend toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles should make it even more popular than ever.
