The third-generation CR-V has been seen without disguises and should reach New Zealand early next year, writes Dave Moore.

Based on the Acura RD-X show car that was displayed at the Detroit Auto Show in January, Honda's CR-V replacement has been spotted and photographed while being tested in California.

The new SUV, which will be the third generation of the CR-V nameplate, is expected to remain a five-seater and will use the same selection of engines as the previous model which, depending on the market, employed 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre V-tec petrol engines and a 2.2-litre turbodiesel.

Hybrid petrol-electric models are likely to be considered for at least the United States and Japanese markets, probably using an integrated-motor-assist version of Honda's 1.8-litre SOHC engine found in the entry-point Civic sedan.
