Today I took the V in for its scheduled 105,000-mile timing belt replacement, fairly dreading the imagined time, cost, and slew of reprimands for not replacing it sooner. (The "severe conditions" schedule, for which my V more than qualifies, decrees a new belt at around 50k.)

Happily, the service was straightforward and undramatic. They kept the V for five hours and charged $295 -- about half what I'd expected on both counts. They told me the old belt "didn't look too bad," showing no cracks or signs of imminent failure. They also inspected the fuel and water pumps, both o' which were pronounced happy and reinstalled without further adieu.

(It bears note that timing belt service is strictly a 1st-gen concern. 2nd-gen Vs use a timing chain, which is more durable and generally lasts the life of the engine. Check thy manual for details...)

The day's only real pain came with filling the tank of a rented Grand Cherokee (at $3.46), then watching the needle drop with what I can only call alarming rapidity...

Is the 2nd generation V considered non-destructive if the timing chain goes?
Thanks
