View Full Version : Paint on center console wiped off!

So I was trying to clean the inside a bit, when my little glade air-freshener fell down, and bumped against the center console as it went to the floor.

As I'm trying to clean up, the paint just comes right off! Is the paint used *that* cheap that it just wipes right off?

Any idea how this can be replaced? Can't really spend $200+ on a new console trim kit...

Thanks!

Wow.

It looks like some of the air freshener stuff has dripped on it there? You could always pull the piece off, clean it up with alcohol and repaint. An automotive paint store can custom mix a can of spray paint to match for $10-$15. I have done this before on older cars when restoring. Works well.

I imagine you'll need to buy that piece of the console. check out the prices at the dealer, if you can just buy that one section it might not be too expensive. what did you use to clean it with anyway?

I think when it fell, the wick itself brushed up against the console. I actually didn't use any cleaner -- just wiped it off with a microfiber rag. I'm going to swing by the dealer and see how much that piece is...fingers crossed!

It is part number 8 in this illustration (no part number or price is listed though?)

Found it. It is about $30 at the dealer. Comes in 2 colors.

This pricing is from slhondaparts.com (San Leandro Honda) and also shows the discount off of Honda list price.

77270-SWA-A01ZA PANEL ASSY., ESCUTCHEON
(DARK WQ GUN METALLIC) $23.96 $5.62

77270-SWA-A01ZB PANEL ASSY., ESCUTCHEON
(DARK WQ TITANIUM) $23.96 $5.62

Thanks! I came by that diagram searching around, but lost hope when I couldn't find the part number associated with it! I'll swing by my dealer tomorrow too, and see if there's any difference in price.

Would you think it's a simple fix? Just pry/pop it off and put on the new one?

you'll probably have to pop off the the piece on top with p,d, n, etc.. first. if you can find a plastic pry tool it would be best as not to nick anything. if not try putting some duct tape at the tip of a #3 flathead screwdriver and it should do the trick.

It looks like the shifter trim piece has to come out, then the surround comes out. part number 8 is just a clip, so it "should" pop out. I would save a trip to the dealer. Since the 07's are still so new, they probably don't have that piece in stock. Call them in case they have to order it.

Unless I am missing something here it looks like the shifter handle has to to come out to get the trim piece with the prnd21. That might be tricky with the D3 button and the shift release button. Also use care, the prnd21 has a light below it if I remember correctly. .

I saw a V with the Wood-grain Trim Kit added to it. It looked very nice. It goes on over the existing dash parts. It is expensive, about $ 200 for the kit. My wife wants me to do it.

Further looking at your problem, the good news is that you don't have to pull the shifter handle or the PRND21 plate. The PRND21 sits inside of the cover you want to change, not on top of it. The bad news is, it looks like you have to pull the AC heater controls out. If you look at the drawing, the forward edge appears to go up under the control box.

H&A has the wood trim that Carvingbarn mentioned. The good news is that the wood trim panel fits over the existing panel. The bad news is the price $204 (it has your panel and door panels & other trim pieces), and the method of installation appears to be double sided tape (which doesn't inspire confidence), although I didn't study the installation directions that close. Here is the website for the wood trim kit. Click on the instructions. Also you want to be sure that the wood trim kit has the panel with no switches. The EX-L has switches on either side of the shifter handle.

A second look at the instructions, it appear that only the panel with the switches is provided. At the top of the instructions it has an application and it says 2007 EX-L & EX-L Navi.

So, I went to the dealer today and ordered the part -- grand total of $31.

Talking to one of the guys there that replaced one already, you pretty much have to take off the part behind the vents on the dash, take out the vent assembly, take off the two side strips, then you have access to the middle console piece.

The part is coming in tomorrow, so I'll let everyone know the results!

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. At least it wasn't terribly expensive.

Just got back from the dealership, and everything's back to normal. Total damage - still $31... they swapped it out for free (easily could've charged me an hour labor).

But I asked if I could take a look at how it's replaced -- and it's *really* simple. And Black Pearl - you were right...instead of having to take half of the dash apart, just pop open the vent console, and the center piece just has clips that you push in, and lift out. The center piece (with the PRND21) stays in there and didn't have to be replaced.

What kind of air-con is that? I thought all the CR-Vs were equipped with a dual-zone climate control

We don't get climate control in the US yet. It's on the '08.

yup - just your plain old vent system...soooo wished i could have gotten the auto climate control...Why? It just adds complexity and maintenance costs in the long term. Honda needs to keep it simple. Look at BMW and Mercedes and all the issues they have had over the last 10 years or so with all of their funky electronic assists and other useless add-ons.

If the CRV had all of the goodies that people want on them I couldn't afford to buy one or maintain it. The big reason I bought a Honda was low maintenance costs beyond the warranty. Honda makes vehicles with all this automatic crap, they are called Acuras. Leave something available for us poor folks. I don't want to have to buy a KIA.

What I would like to see is more flexibility in the trim lines. Why can't I get a nav system in a LX or EX? (not that I want one but what if I did, I would have to pay 6 grand more over the LX price and put up with a sweaty tush) Why do only those who want leather under their keesters deserve something as basic as heated mirrors? They were standard on my bottom of the barrel Plymouth Voyager.

I wanted privacy glass, but I had to get a stupid moon roof that I did not want (although I found I do like it when I am waiting for the wife in mall parking lots). I could have done well without the fancy wheels, 6 CD sound system, and the fake chrome grill. Why can't the LX get a cargo shelf as a option?

I will say that I like Honda's policy of dealer installed options. I don't want fog lights (they look cool but I would never use them because I find they tend to blind me from other cars), a roof rack, or a rear spoiler. I am glad I didn't have to pay for them because I wanted privacy glass. But if I could have got the privacy glass, rear intermittent wipers, and cargo shelf in an LX, I would have been happy to forgo the other "refinements" that I could care less about.

So let's keep it simple, but more flexible.

No fair... :)

Bear in mind my Yankee countrymen, that while our Greek friend always tantalizes us* with photos of the myriad of wonderful accoutrements that he has on his European V, he does not show us photos of the window sticker showing us the costs of these goodies. I doubt Honda provides them for free of charge.

*Tantalizes you perhaps, but the Black Pearl (me) would be far happier to have less of this claptrap on the Black Pearl (the V) and more green in his wallet. As such I find these photos to be amusing, not heart rendering.

I did the same thing... only my air freshener was on the left vent. Its the oil, just as soon as I saw it drip I wiped it with a napkin.. it took the paint right off.. small spot though so I don't plan on a fix at this time. I won't use those type air freshners again. I'll stick to trees.

For those who had their paint come off from the oil in the air freshener you should call glade (or who ever makes that air freshener) and complain!! what kind of product are they selling if it takes the paint off just with a swipe?!?! glad i only buy the trees! yikes!!

Be glad it was only on a $30 dashboard panel... My wife found out the hard way after setting one of those damn Glade air fresheners down on our antique cherry wood dining room table and it dripped on the varnish! It ate a silver dollar sized chunk of varnish in about 2 seconds flat.

That stuff is seriously toxic. If it does that to paint and heavy laquer, please tell me again why I want to turn it into vapor and inhale it into my lungs as "air freshener??

At the car stereo shop I work at part time, we've seen a couple of different cars that have damage related to those types of air fresheners. On one car, you could see a crater streaking down the console where one had leaked. I stay away from those kinds all together. I just get a couple that go underneath the seats :).

Um...don't take this the wrong way but am I the only one who thinks that an an "air freshener" that softens/dissolves paint would be something that I'd rather not intentionally expose my respiratory system to?

Just sayin'

Which color (Gun Metallic or Titanium) did you end up getting? I need to get the basically the same thing, but the color names are not very helpful. It's the same color scheme as what you have in the picture.
