The Drivers door lock actuator has failed on my older 97, which my daughter-in-law drives, and my 2002. Anyone else had this happen? Mine failed in the unlock position, so I could at least use the door until fixed. On the 97, it failed in the locked position and was a huge expensive pain to fix.

Two times I had problems with it. Have you got some service manuals? If have no, take advantage of line

And then look paragraph 20. There is outer handle rodwith a bad groove. Fastenings only were untwisted. It is necessary to have only screw-drivers for alignment and adjustments. Not be in a panic - Honda it is very reliable

Please do not post any links to on-line Honda Service Manuals for the 1st gen CR-V. Honda has not authorized either on-line or CD copies of the factory service manual, therefore any link to a scanned copy is violating their copyright.
Please purchase the official Helms service manual if you need it.
There is no sense in getting this forum into any legal troubles.
I'm having problems with my actuator as well. It hasn't completly failed yet, but it's acting erratic. Sometimes it locks and sometimes it doesn't lock. I'm not looking forward to replacing it.
I had this same problem with my 94' Acura Legend, but after replacing the actuator the problem was resolved.

I had the problem on my 2000 CRV
Yeah, on my recently purchased 1998, it has the same problem as Dana. It'll lock fine one time and then won't lock at all the next. The next time, it'll unlock or lock the driver's door and nothing else and on and on. The only thing that works reliably is the rear window.

I think that the drivers side door actuator on my 99 ust did the same thing. My husband and I went to the pet store, locked the doors, and when we came out the driver's side door wouldn't open. I could use my keyfob to unlock all the rest of the doors, and the lock knob would go up and down, but the door wouldn't open. Does this sound like the same thing? If it is, would anyone mind telling me how much it cost to fix it? I guess I'll be taking it to a dealership soon. Thanks :(

After removing the door panel, it isn't too bad.

If the lock knob goes up and down fully, as opposed to just moving slightly, the actuator is probably O.K.
What I have seen on a number of pre '02 CR-V's that the door won't open from either the outside or inside handle is that the linkage from the inside handle down in the latch assembly gets corroded and starts to bind. When you open the door from the inside and release the handle, the linkage doesn't return fully to it's rest position, which prevents the latch from resetting internally and you cannot get the door open. Once you do get the door open (which can be a project) most latches can be freed up with some good penetrating oil worked into the linkage (with the door panel off)

This is my problem on my 98 CR-V. What is the best way to free up this linkage without destroying the door panel? The door is locked and I cannot open it to remove the panel. I called a couple of different dealerships, no help. I have the actuator/linkage in hand ready to replace it. At this point, I'm going to remove the passenger side and take a look to see the optimum place to cut the drivers door panel to release the door. Thanks, Dave

I think others have been able to get the door panel off without opening the door, if I recall correctly. however, it may have been the back doors they were working on? If you remove the speaker, does that give you any access over to the latch assembly to pop the door open? I'll post a schematic of the door panel in this post in a few minutes - after I find it...

Well, by chance I got the door unlocked and opened. I replaced the actuator, but now the door doesn't unlock automatically when the inside door handle is pulled or with the electric unlock button. A safety issue as far as I'm concerned. It's what I get for buying from a junk yard. I just hope I can get my money back. To get the door unlocked, I have to pull on the inside handle and manually pull up on the vertical button. Two handed operation. Can the controller be an issue? Or is it just a receiver for the keyless entry? I'll try some spray lube in the mean time. What a pain! Thanks for the help so far.

Thanks for the help so far.The doors are not supposed to open from the inside if the door is locked. I just went outside and verified that both our V's do not do this.
The door not unlocking via the electric lock button would be a separate issue.
Can you unlock the door by pulling UP on the lock button on the door? I am not sure why you would have to pull on the interior door handle while pulling up the door's vertical button?
Keep the keyless remote out of the picture, entirely, while you troubleshoot this. It is, and would be, an entirely separate issue. It just sends a signal to the electric locks to lock/unlock. The keyless remote also will not work at all if a key is in the ignition at all.
