Hello-

We're looking to purchase a used CR-V (cheaper and we don't like the styling of the new ones as much). We test drove a 2004 with low mileage that looks and ran great, however there are a few red flags:

1) The owner acknowledges (when asked) that the car had been in an accident- it rear-ended another car going about 20 mph. He said the radiator had to be replaced but the engine was otherwise unharmed. The bodywork was impeccable (I would not have been able to tell that it had been in an accident). (BTW, I was dismayed that carfax didn't report the accident, even though it did report several car services.)

2) Upon starting the car there was just a hint of smoke in the exhaust. The owner thought it was a result of the car sitting in the garage for a week, but that sounds bogus. I fear burning oil, possibly as a result of the accident. The engine bay had been shampooed (sp?), so I wasn't able to tell if there were any leaks. (Whether or not that was deliberate is anyone's guess.)

3) There was a squeaking noise when the fan was on low, which may be connected to the accident.

4) The owner was cagey about it, but it was pretty clear that his teenage daughter was the primary driver (and probably behind the wheel during the accident). Which leads me to believe the car has been driven hard.

Normally I wouldn't consider a car that has been in an accident, but we're in a small market and the car is exactly the model we want. Thoughts and recommendations are greatly appreciated!

If the radiator was damaged and the car was left running by the young driver right after the wreck happened, it could have overheated which is BAD for any aluminum block and head engine. I would stay away from this one. You have received too many bad signs already.

Thanks for the tip- that's a good point.

I should have added - That could explain the smoke upon startup...which is not a good sign. Stop by the local Honda dealer with the VIN or name of the owner and ask if you could see the service records. They may say no, but then tell them that you don't need to "see" them yourself but if they could tell you what is on each one it would be helpful. Sometimes a dealer is reluctant to show them because of privacy issues with the owner's name, address, credit card numbers, etc. I have used this method before with good results.

Go to your mechanic and get it scoped out most accidents are nothing especially the way cars are built today i.e. My fried reared ended a guy hard in traffic he had his insurance take care of it it was in the shop for 3 days and looked perfect just everything is built nowadays to be replaced in components. A mechanic is the best advice but I had to blow my budget on the 04 CR-V by 2 grand but I got everything low mileage fully loaded in perfect condition warranty and fluid changes plus my mechanic said it was in phenomenal shape. Heres the deal if you go bargain basement make sure everything is checked repeatedly you don't want to skim on 2000 bucks in original cost and end up paying 7 grand for repais and being miserable. Be patient a deal will come your way don't give excuses for buying a car you will know when it is right good luck
