View Full Version : Getting a bit of a runaround from my dealer.

Last week I negotiated a deal on a Tango Red '08 FWD LX. My salesperson (a girl I happen to know from high school) said she'd track me one down, may take a week or two. I told her no problem, I'm not in a big hurry as long as they understand that I will be driving my trade-in in the meantime. Fine.
I get a call today. The only FWD '08 in Tango Red to hit the ground so far near us (even at that, it is in NY), the dealer won't give it up. Apparently must have a potential buyer on the line. So she offers to either get me an '07 for $200 less (that's the difference in sticker between the '07 and the '08), or try to find my second choice color of the dark blue (which I really don't want).
I told her I'd wait it out a while. I'd prefer to be patient and get exactly what I want than settle for something else and not be 100% happy with it.
I did offer to accept an AWD model for the exact same deal as what we made on the FWD, but something tells me they won't go for that!
What I don't understand, is why can't they just put in an order for exactly what I want? Being the beginning of a new model year, surely they could schedule that?

Why don't you pick up the phone, or send e-mails, yourself and do your own legwork? You may be surprised to find that the car is available nearby and you can get an even better deal, perhaps enabling you to afford the AWD version.
Have you considered the '07? As far as i know, the only difference is the availability of 8-way power seats on the EX-L model. This may be another way to knock $500 off the price.
Finally, I can personally guarantee you that you will do at least 5% - 10% better if you sell your car yourself rather than trading it in.
All of these suggestions may close the gap between the FWD and the AWD pricing.
Don't forget that the AWD has better resale value, so you don't lose that incremental price.

I looked for a FWD, asside from everyone thinking I was out of my mind, there was only one in the Pittsburgh area LX in a color I didn't want. If you check out dealers in the south, you may have a better chance. Most dealers have their inventory on line, so you could find your own vehicle. 4WD will definitely have a better resale in PA.

I don't think the dealer is yanking you around. I have seen multiple dozens of new V's in my area and only one has been Tango Red. If you look through the member's info here and on other forums, there are only a small handful that are in that color. My local dealer has about 20 new V's right now and none are Tango Red.

When I was talking to my dealer when I purchased my 07 CRV, the two colors that were harder to find was my blue and also the Tango Red CRV. I still don't see too many Tango Red CRV's in my area. If you have time to wait, be patient and one that you can afford will appear. Also, follow the advice of all of the previous posters to this thread and it should increase your chances of finding the one you want. I am not dealer loyal when buying cars and save money by shopping around, even in other states.

Finally found a '08 LX 2WD in Tango Red at a dealer about 180 miles away. My dealer is trying to work out a swap right now. Hopefully they will give it up. These red ones seem to be tough to find. Everyone is carrying that Glacier Blue and Black.
I imagine they'll drive it here, though I'd rather it came on a truck. I guess beggars can't be too choosy.

I have purchased several vehicles that had to be driven from other dealerships, and it's not really a bad deal at all. In the course of the drive, they sometimes pick up some little things that may be missed in new car preparation.

Hopefully, it will be driven and not towed. Then you can be assured that someone tried to break-in your new V's engine the right way, by letting it rev high, under load. :)

Well all the Tango Reds must be here in New Hampshire, besides mine, there is another one at my work, another one at my Doctor's office building, plus I've seen a few on the highway. I got mine for invoice+$300 so they mustn't be that rare around here.
For the record, there are no differences in the EX and LX between 07 and 08. That is why they are showing up quickly. No changes to the assembly. The EX-L 08 gets the power seat, the dualzone climate control, and the louder audio system. The EX-L Navi 08 get the powerseat and the dualzone as well (it already had the louder audio).

Are all Honda dealers this lazy? Last Thursday I passed along the info on a red CRV in Columbus, OH to my dealer so she could call and make arrangements for a dealer swap. She called and left a message with the Ohio dealer regarding the swap. I hadn't heard back from her yet after almost a week, so I emailed her today asking of there was any word on the deal. She said no luck so far finding me a car, will I consider another color? We've been through that issue before. No, I want RED!!!! I asked, what about the car in Columbus I tracked down for you? She said, oh, they never called us back. I told her, here's an idea, pick up the phone and call them again!
Do Honda dealers get so much business that they don't have to actually work for a sale? First I located the car for her. Next thing you know I'll have to call the other dealership myself and arrange the trade!
The only reason I am sticking with my present dealer is they made me a good deal on the car and my trade in (better than any other dealership around), and they happen to be the closest Honda dealership to me and is where I will be getting all my service done. It is just frustrating. I am so used to dealers trying to rush you into your new vehicle so they can get that check cashed! I've never had to sit back and wait for one to get around to finding me a car.

Thankfully not all dealers are like that. If you can't find a better deal and don't want to shop elsewhere....call the sales manager....if the sales manager blows you off call the GM.....GM's don't like to hear about customers getting the run around and potental lost sales.

hey all. New to the forum... and I had to post because I keep thinking of what my boyfriend keeps telling me about honda dealerships. They know they have a good product and most of the dealerships don't want to have to really bargain for anything because they don't think their *poop* doesn't stink...
We're finishing up my paper work and I'll be getting my V on friday- we did a lot of negotiating and a LOT of phone calls back and forth.. but in the end i think we got a great deal!
My boyfriend and I had been looking at the dealership closest to my house and met a real nice sales associate- Sarah and she was NOT pushy at all- which I loved because searching for a new car you deal with a lot of vultures but anyway they weren't giving us a price that we wanted so my BF decided to contact some other dealerships an hour away in Tampa and got a really great OTD price- requested it in an email with pics and vin number - then we brought that back to Sarah and they counter acted to the email and then my BF negotiated again with them and made a final offer- and they came back with one that we were totally happy with...
So be persistent, get the best quote and bargain between dealerships... it seemed to have worked for us... You just have to be a lil forceful & knowledgeable with different prices that the V are going for. I'm just glad my boyfriend is a great business man and knows how to wheel & deal ;)
Sorry this post is like a short story haha!

Still waiting for them to get me a RED '08 2WD LX. In the mean time, the sales manager I negotiated my deal with has been replaced. I talked to the new sales manager and he assured me all deals made by the old manager will still be honored, but I don't have a nice warm fuzzy feeling.

While it is clearly better to be Honda dealer than a ford or gm pusher these days, a professional will give you the straight and skinny. I am dealing with Natalie Smith at Orange County Honda World in So Cal, and she will do what it takes to make a sale. I still have to shop around and see what the market is doing, but in the end she has always come up with the best bottom line deal. The first time I was looking at buying my '07 Element she carted the exact car in from another dealer. The numbers were not what I wanted and I postponed the transaction. She sold the car ('07 Galaxy Gray, EX 4WD 5-AT) that same afternoon, but hauled another one in and had one sitting there from that day on. I monitored the lot. A month later I returned and we agreed on a new set of numbers, and I closed the deal. A good sales person will be proactively stage for you. Your high school chum is just a lazy slob and not a reflection of Honda dealers. Switch dealers or deal with the fleet director, you do not want to funnel commission to a lazy dawg who obviously does not care about your satisfaction....

I went to my dealer down here in Houston. I told them what I wanted and they initially tried to push another one off on me. Finally they got the message and looked around. The one I wanted was an EX-L, silver out and silver in, w/o navigation. The only one available was coming out of the factory in Japan. I said I’d wait for it. It took about three weeks to get here. My dealer gave me updates about once every week.
If you want something specific, tell them. Negotiate a price BEFORE they order it. (My dealer only took off $500 from sticker)
Any Honda dealer can do the same thing. If you want something special, MAKE them work for you. You’re the customer. If they say they can’t, find one that will and never go back to the first one. I have a dealer within 5 miles. They tried to screw me one time. That was enough for me, I have bought an Odyssey and the CR-V from a another dealer that will work with me.
BTW, I’ve had it about a month now and it has been great.

Does your dealer have allocations for this model? A dealer can "put a order in", but if they don't have any allocations the order may take a long time, if ever, to complete.
We ordered our EXL AWD Navi on Oct 20, on Nov 5 we received a build date of Nov 20 @ the Ohio plant. Should get our VIN around the build date, and have it in the driveway the first week of Dec.

Just because a dealer has a particular car in stock doesn't mean they will trade it. There are stores that simply don't do ANY dealer trades. There are stores that have bad blood between them and they won't trade with each other.
Depending on where you live, a 2WD LX is probably the least popular model of CRV and Tango Red isn't the best seller. Stores tend to order the models that sell the best and a lot of smaller stores (depending on location) won't order ANY 2WD CRV's.
If you do live in an area that get's snow or ice, I would strongly reccommend a 4WD CRV. As someone else already mentioned resale is tough on a 2WD down the road.
Good Luck!

hmmm... interesting... I was always under the impression that trades across dealers were common practice. I had to have two Hondas brought in from other dealers and the transaction was as if the desired car was on the back lot with an hour delay or so.... You must be dealing with a real %^&&**-up dealer network in your area....
