Just changed the diff oil in my 98 Crv with Honda CVT oil, the dealer said to put in HG oil.
The service manual says CVT, so I insisted, did I do the right thing ?

I don't know what is meant by HG or CVT. However it is a very well established fact on this forum that the Dual Pump Fluid specified by Honda MUST BE USED.
Having read some of the horror stories here on the forum, I have lost all faith in dealers.
When you say "service manual" do you mean a Honda authorized manual or something like a Chilton manual? Look in your owner's manual and see what is specified. The only exception to that would be if Honda came out with an improved oil since 98.
I feel a need for 2RedVs (our resident diff oil expert) to chime in here.
If you insisted on the oil currently specified by Honda for your make and model, you have done well. Sadly, I am coming to the conclusion that the dealers just can not be trusted, even with simple things like the correct oil.

If i recall when the 97 CRv's came out the manual did say to use CVT fluid in the rear end. A bulletin came out soon after to correct it.
"HG" is on the label of most if not all Honda fluids and stands for Honda Genuine.
As has been stated Dual Pump or the new Dual Pump 2 is the only fluid to be used in the rear diff.

If the poster had an HRV with a CVT; continuously variable transmission, this would seem correct as the CVT is not a rear differential. It is the transmission.
The dealer may be correct about the fluid IF the original CVT fluid has been discontinued or substituted in your country. If you are actually talking about the rear differential (the all wheel drive unit) then I doubt any other fluid than Honda Dual Pump fluid has been specified.

Thank you..............................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !OK, good. SInce you are talking about the rear differential (real time AWD unit) you MUST, like lizzurd says, use ONLY Honda DUAL PUMP FLUID in it. There is a brand new formulation that just came out called Dual Pump Fluid II, but the older style will work just fine for you if the newest is not yet available in your country.

Thanks Red, I will check with the Honda dealer to find out if they have "dual pump oil", in Antigua are parts and specialised oils are difficult to find, it is normally a question of ordering hoping, that one day the dealer has sufficient orders to merit a shipment. I met a guy in the Honda parts department who after 7 months was still waiting for his new windshield. falling coconuts are mean when they hit a moving CRV. I should say "hats off to Honda" that for a car that has 200k on it, both the differential oil and transmission oil were very clean when I drained them, this is my second CRV and the weaks spots are definitely the ones that are dicussed regularly on this Forum, noisy suspension, central, locking AC filters, valve clearances etc.
