Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., Japan's second- largest carmaker, boosted production globally in August to meet rising demand from the U.S. and Asia.

Global output rose 8.4 percent to 311,117 vehicles, Tokyo- based Honda said in a statement today. Domestic production climbed 6.8 percent to 96,415, and overseas output gained 9.1 percent to 214,702. Exports increased 44 percent to 62,470.

Higher sales of the company's fuel-efficient vehicles such as the Civic and the Accord are driving Honda's production growth. The company's sales in the U.S. reached a record last month.

``Honda is doing very well in the U.S., its most profitable market,'' said Hirofumi Yokoi, an analyst at CSM Worldwide in Tokyo. ``The carmaker's core models are showing strong growth in India and China.''

Honda sold 158,342 new vehicles in the U.S. in August, a record for a single month. The 4.7 percent increase was led by Fit subcompacts, mid-size Accords and CR-V small crossover- utility vehicles.

Honda's shares climbed 90 yen, or 2.4 percent, to 3,870 yen as of 10:05 a.m. on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
