Hi...
I see the new CRV's on the road, and they just don't look like they have as much cargo area as the old style CRV's. I have a '99 CR-V.
Does anyone here have first hand knowledge of the new CRV style vs. the old one in terms of cargo issues? I use my CRV as an SUV because I'm a painting contractor.
Thanks!

Heres a quick comparison of cargo volume.
1997-2001 Cargo Volume (cu. ft., seat up/down) 29.6/67.2
2007+ Cargo Volume (cu. ft., rear seat up/down) 35.7 / 72.9

The gen 3's have more cargo space but it may distributed differently. The spare tire is in the floor which seems like it would cut the height, and the rear slopes somewhat. The gen 3's are wider. You would have to measure the dimensions. I have a vague recollection of reading that the way volumes are measured in vehicles is that the volume under consideration is filled with ping pong balls. The balls are counted, and the volume of each ball is summed for a total. Ping pong balls will go places that paint buckets or cut sheets of plywood won't. I am not saying that the gen 3 is dimensionally less, just that I think you need to do the measurements to be sure. Easy enough to do, measure yours and go to a dealer and measure a new one.
Another criticism of the gen 3s in another thread is that you can't open the hatch window and carry 2X4's etc. I am not purporting the wisdom (or lack of wisdom) of doing that, only saying you can't do it in a gen 3.

All very interesting. I've been putting off going to a dealership and nosing around a new CRV to compare things.
I love the fact that my older CRV hatch window can pop open. I know you're not supposed to haul things sticking out the back of it, but I have (my 15' extension ladder). I guess this could be remedied by getting a roof rack.

WOW!! is all i have to say... my boyfriend and I moved this weekend and the V held so much stuff... we also went shopping for a new tv stand and our 42" HDTV and that box was HUGE for the tv and the stand... first i bought the stand and a book shelf and folded the seats up towards the front and man I had no problem shoving so much stuff in there. then we picked up our tv and that box was huge and it fit perfectly!
but like i said I haven't had any problems moving all our belongings to our new apartment.. i can understand how someone might find the pop up window beneficial in the older gens but i guess like you said DustyGirl. nothing a roof rack can't fix?!!!
SO far no complaints on the cargo- definitely fit a HUGE AMOUNT of stuff!!
