Artic Blue
Gray leather
Mud guards
Wheel locks
Cost $24595
Doc fee $119
Tax & Tag $339
Total $25053
I owned a '99 CR-V (AWD) which I traded for an '03 Odyssey. The current generation really builds on what Honda started with.
Thanks to all those who have posted here - their comments, suggestions, and thoughts makes this forum a valuable resource for potential and current owners.
The Ody Club site has a very large database also - containing well documented modifications and suggestions. Great for pricing the market before a purchase - just as this site.

i bought a brand new 2007 crv lx for 22,000 plus tax licence and extended warenty
Then I guess I did allright. The dealer threw in a free 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty and also free tires for the first two times (8 tires) as long as I get the CRV serviced there. Every 6th oil change is free too. 21,759 total with no tax or other fees and a full tank to go!
On 11-29-2007 I bought 2008 Glacier Blue Metallic 4WD EX 5AT from one of the MASS Honda dealer (Honda Village, Newton, MASS) for 22,246.00 including the $635.00 destination fee. I got 3 free oil change from the dealer. But did not get anything else free from the dealer. Well did not add any options or extra on that car. It was Out the Door price and paid cash for it. I have been driving and man it is fun to drive this baby.

WOW!! It looks like the dealer paid you to buy it. That price appears to be less than what the dealer usually pays for the vehicle, considering typical Honda dealer holdback. (http://www.edmunds.com/advice/incentives/holdback/index.html)
$23091 (invoice incl. destination) (http://www.edmunds.com/honda/crv/2008/index.html)
- $724 (holdback: 3% of $24150(base MSRP))
$22367 (~ dealer cost)
Honda must be giving the dealers some serious incentives to move the CR-V @ a price like that!
Congrats on your purchase.

Paid $21,499 plus tax on 11-30-2007 for a 2008 Tango Red Pearl 4WD LX. Didn't get any oil changes, but got a coupon good for the repair of one door ding or scratch within the first 90 days. This was the best deal I could find in my area, but wish I could have gotten your deal for the EX.

We just leased a new 2008 Royal Blue Pearl CR-V EX 4WD with Front Splash Guards, Cargo Tray, Wood-Look Trim Kit and All-Season Floor Mats.
It's a 48 month 15,000 mile/yr lease and we pay $323/month which includes 5.5% tax. We traded in a 2004 Civic EX Sedan with 79,800 miles that we owed $10,400 on. Only had to pay the first months payment. I thought it was a great deal.
So far we love it. My only minor complaint is the gas mileage but I am sure the mileage will go up as the weather gets better. On a couple of 350 mile trips back to Illinois, it was getting around 21-22 and around town it is getting about 18 mpg. Of course the weather can't help. It is extremely cold in Nebraska right now.

Old thread, but FWIW: I paid $26,500 (incl. destination charge) before taxes/title/etc. for my 2WD EX-L with navigation. I probably could have gone lower but I was really getting tired of negotiating. I also had a trade-in so that changed things a little.

I can't speak for myself, but my parents just got a 2008 Honda CR-V LX with AWD (after trade, etc.) for around 22,000 even. They didn't want the EX or above as it comes with a moonroof/sunroof and my parents hate them. Plus, they both like the extra 2" of headroom they gain by not having one.
I drive a 2007 Honda Ridgeline and I love my truck.

I purchased my 04 EX AWD brand new for 20,700. I still feel I got a great deal...the car still runs great at 115K...:)
I shopped (but did not do any hardcore negotiating) in Tulsa, Albuquerque, and San Diego. All the quoted prices were within about a hundred bucks of each other. I did notice that AWD CRVs were less common in San Diego.
I bought an 08 EX AWD at Joe Marina Honda in Tulsa for $23, 480 "out the door" with no negotiating.
I bought where and when I did because I knew the salesman and they had the exact car I wanted.
Anyway, I have a hunch that $23,500 is about the average price for an 08 EX AWD in the southwest US.

That sounds about right. If I HAD to, I'd want to trade in my Ridgeline for a CR-V if I had a choice. I love driving my parent's CR-V (when they LET me) as it handles and drives wonderfully.

That's the total price, with tax, title and tags????? If so, that's a REALLY good price!
EX-L AWD
$24,956 base price (includes destination)
$115 front splash guards & wheek locks (pre-installed)
$150 doc fee
----------------
$25,221 b/4 TTL
Invoice price is $25,457. If I subtract $73 for what I could have paid for the accessories on-line, I paid $25,148, or $309 below invoice.
The dealer quoted the base vehicle price on their first email quote to me, which got my attention. In the showroom, they lowered the accessories from an original $300 to $115 pretty easily, but wouldn't budge on the doc fee.

This is what I've been offered:
Is it a fair deal?
Sale Price (including mud guards & cargo tray) = $23106.20
Processing fee = $66.50
Taxes = $741.53 (3.2% state and local)
DMV = $22.00 (transferring tags)
Total = $23,936.23
2008 EX AWD
XboxEboy, I paid $23,480 out the door for my 08 EX AWD, and paid title and registration (but no tax) on top of that.
Your OTD price of about $23,170 (if your are getting an EX AWD or EXL 2WD) seems to me like a good price. But I recommend you do a lot of online research, especially on this forum, and then decide for yourself if you have the deal you want.
Good Luck

I purchased my 2008 Honda CR-V EX 2WD in Tallahassee for
$23,871 OTD (includes, state and county tax, transfer tag fees, dealer "processing fees", etc.) on 04/23/2008. My purchase price was Consumer Reports Dealer Invoice of $22,104 (including destination charge). I believe I could have bargained for a price slightly lower than below dealer invoice but the vehicle I purchased was in the color I wanted and it was literally off the delivery truck with 7 miles on it.
My uncle has purchased a lot of vehicles for friends and family over the years and has always maintained that Honda was very difficult to bargain with and that they refused to come off their prices much in contrast to Toyota and other car companies. I don't think that's the case anymore in today's slowing economic environment. My suggestion to anyone contemplating purchasing a 2008 CR-V currently on the dealer's lot is to purchase Consumer Reports New Car Price Report and make an offer approx $500 above the "true cost to dealership" (dealer invoice cost less factory holdback, i.e., offer Dealer Invoice less factory holdback, less factory to dealer incentives plus $500 for your CR-V of choice. Don't be surprised if they snap at your offer. Be sure to let them run your credit report prior to making this offer however. If they know you can actually qualify for financing (and are a BUYER as opposed to a SHOPPER) they will take your offer much more seriously. I worked at a dealership years ago and the sales managers always used to laugh at giving shoppers shopping prices as opposed to the true buying price.
In my case, I told them that if "if they would accept my offer I would be signing papers today." They accepted my first offer quickly without a counter-offer which leads me to believe that they are wanting to move a lot of inventory very very quickly. It's a buyers market and people should take advantage of it.

New to forum -- week ago closed deal on a CRV exl AWD no nav white for 25,500 out the door -- no trade or financing. In Mo. the sales tax and title fees are paid at the state offices. This included a 99.00 "doc fee" (Bull S---) I said I would not pay this, but graciously the (Great dealer -- in Columbia Mo.) included in the 25,500. This dealer was the best --more like the "good ole boy" dealers in the country towns around here.

Just bought my Black CR-V EXL AWD with Black leather! Decided to go for the end of the month sales, rather than wade through the crowds during Memorial Day weekend. I also think (hope) I got a pretty good deal. Here are the details:
Car = $24,972
Freight = $635
Processing = $300
VA Tax = $777
Dealer Tax = $44
VA Tags = $66.50
Financing = 4.99% (60 months)
TOTAL (out the door) = $26,793
I feel like I could have squeezed a bit more out of them, but I'm not sure.
Also, for those curious, I bought from one of the only dealers in the Northern Virginia are who was willing to let me do 90 days delayed payment, which helps me out a bunch.
Best of luck to all and thanks for your help!

I have been wanting/needing a CR-V for at least 2 years. I have been lurking on here for just as long hoping I could get one.
I finally did!
Later this week, I am picking up a 2008 CR-V EX AWD.
It is dark blue.
I got it for:
$23106.20
Processing fee = $66.50
Taxes = $741.53 (3.2% state and local)
DMV = $22.00 (transferring tags)
Total = $23,936.23
Not only that, but they threw in mud-gaurds, the cargo tray, and 4.34% financing.

I think I may have overpaid, I have a 2008 4WD EX-L with Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with voice recognition. On Hondas web site I see the MSRP as: $29,035 and I ended up paying $29,075 however this includes all the docs/taxes etc. and I got a bumper to bumper 120,000 mile 8 year warranty including zero deductable and free diagnostics. That to me is worth a lot, I doubt I’ll have any big problems (it is a Honda) but I just love the peace of mind of being able to drop it off and say, “Yah, it’s making a noise” and getting my car back fixed, never with a charge for the next 8 years. I pretty much I had the car (with docs/taxes) at $27,600 and it was $1,475 for the crazy warranty.
I also got my first oil change for free, free tube of touch up paint, and 1 extra key (beyond the 3 it came with). I was a little between a rock and a hard place as I had wrecked my car 2 days before and I really needed a car for the next day to get to work and they even had the black/black I wanted so I think it all worked out in the end.

^Great! It is always wise to check other options when it comes to financing and insurance. I am glad you were able to get coverage for considerably less from your credit union. Some people do not have the option of choosing over other alternatives. You do and that is great! Enjoy many trouble free miles on your new CR-V!

I only payed about $20 over invoice for the EX-L with Navigation. I had to play a couple of other dealers against my original quote to get that.
Last day of the month + rough economy = good potential for deals!
(They also offered me the 7-year HondaCare warranty for "at cost" which was about $750 if I recall. I know I can get it through another dealer for $650 which I'm actually considering.)
Edit: Someone above mentioned Gap Insurance -- USAA (which I did not finance with) has theirs for under $200 for the full term of the loan. Obviously a fantastic deal but I know many people aren't part of their Credit Union. My insurance carrier (Erie) was $63/year, which I took. Dealership was significantly higher.

Hi everybody,
I am new and just found this site.
I want to buy a EX-L 4WD with Navi Green Tea.
Edmunds.com has the invoice price of $26,398 + $635 destination fee = $27,033
I went to 3 dealers and one of them gave me invoice price of $27,033 including the destination.
Is that a good price?
I offered them $26,398 and they didn't wanted, so will look harder.
The salesman told me green tea is the most expensive and harder to get color, is that true?
Do somebody know the real price the dealer pays or have the Consumers Report that the dealer pays.
Need to buy it within 2 weeks.
Thank you in advance for your help.

You can get a Consumer Reports New Car Price Guide and know exactly what the dealer paid for your car, including any holdbacks (manufacturer's rebates) they receive.
You can order the report online for $12 and get an instant link to the information within minutes of ordering it.
https://ec.consumerreports.org/ec/aps/order.htm?aps_type=NAR&INTKEY=nc5-nchome
I used it and it was very helpful in negotiating a good price.
We settled on $26,800 incl $635 destination charge.
Dealer prep fees will vary by region, as well as tax & licensing fees.
Good Choice of CRV - I really love my Green Tea EX-L w/ Nav (I had to wait until they ordered one, as you are right, the Green Tea Metallic is hard to find).
Good Luck and keep us posted!

It really depends on where you're located. I've seen some outrageously low sales prices in the south and some fairly high ones in the northeast. I live on Long Island, NY and paid 26,250 with a roof rack, mud guards and wheel locks and destination fee. I guess that would translate into a basic car with destination of about $25,800. I shopped around A LOT and no one was giving good deals. Your price seems a bit on the high side. I suggest you shop around and be prepared to wait if you want a better price.

Thank you for the advise guys. I am in NY as well where everything is more expensive.
Just bought the $14 report and found good news; there is a $852 dealer holdback that bring the price down from $27,033 including destination minus $852 = $26,181.
This report is only good for the month, so hope can get it before the end of the month.
Will start offering $26,000 and most I hope to pay is $26,500 I guess plus all the taxes and fees.
Here is part of the report that want to share with future buyers, hope do not get in trouble:
LX4WD-EX4WD-EX-L4WD-EX-L w/Navi
$21,005 $23,092 $25,457 $27,033

I asked a few dealers about the nationwide $852 holdback and they all gave me excuses saying all kind of excuses, like that was last month, year, it is only for the dealers not to pass it to buyers, etc...
I hate car salesman, they all want to ripp you off.
Trying really hard to get a decent deal by the weekend, need car asap.
Any advises will be great.
I am planning to make them an offer of $26,500 hoping someone takes it.
Was told by friends to go the end of the month to at least 5 dealers and make them that offer until one takes it, but is is really hard to drive to all of them when are 30 minutes apart; never tought was going to be that hard to buy a car at a decent price.
One salesman told me that the green tea color was the worst, the cheapest and that will loose re-sale value because nobody wants it and wanted me to buy one of the ones he got. What do you think guys?

JSMexUSA-
Keep in mind that whatever you offer them, you need to take into account the dealer's profit - they aren't going to sell you a car at cost and not make any profit.
As for the holdback, it is money they receive from the manufacturer - it can be considered when negotiating your price.
Consumer Reports is current - not last year's info, or last month's - that is why the report is only good for 30 days.
The color is purely personal - if that's the color you want, you should insist on it, but keep in mind, you may have to wait until they can locate one for you - sometimes from out of state, or in my case, from Japan, as they are scarce in some areas.
Good luck in your negotiating - for more information, read Consumer Reports guide to buying a car - full of helpful advice on how to negotiate your best price.

Hello everyone :)
I just finished up after scouring the internet for a week for a green tea metallic 2wd EX. Nobody had one!! My wife was set on this color and I just had to find it for her to make her happy! I negotiated to $23,785 OTD, with the cargo mat and mud guards included. Does that seem decent? I had another area dealer down to $23,650 OTD with no accessories. I figure I really didn't mind the extra $135 as long as we are getting the exact suv we wanted.

JSMex,
That seems like a remarkable price, especially considering you got the relatively hard to find color that you wanted. According to my numbers, that is only $433 over the Dealer's net/net price (dealer invoice, inclusive of destination, minus the holdback, and any incentives, which is none on the CR-V). I'm not at all questioning your price, but when I see such low selling prices, prices that won't support dealership operations, I'm thinking the dealer probably tacked a bit of profit on another part of the deal, such as the doc fees or financing, and that is OK, given the great base price you got.

On March 19th I bought a 2008 CR-V 2wd EX from Norm Reeves Honda. I have bought several cars from them over 18 years all over the phone. This time the salesman (internet sales) was Michael Do. Contrary to common perception, Norm Reeves Honda and Longo Toyota are exceptionally well managed businesses with super professional sales people.
As a professor in a major Southern Calif School of Business Administration, I routinely cite these two dealers as reaping outstanding market success on the strength of their integrity. Just to be clear: it always helps to bargain hard and to have all the relevant data on hand. The trick with these dealers is that they know a genuine customer when they see one and they don’t pull any dirty tricks.
For the record, the car was $21,498. Doc fees are $55, Sales tax is $1670 and DMV fee is $28. License fees are $140, Registration Transfer is $60 and Calif Tire fees are $8.75. So the grand total is $23,460.11
A week later I bought a 2008 Accord EXL-V6 in Diamond White Pearl from the same salesman. Exceptional service again.
By dealing over the phone, the actual time at the dealership to pick up the car and complete the paper work is about an hour and a half.
Cheers!
Great Pics. The Borrego Beige looks very nice under the SoCal sun. I wonder if "Borrego Beige" refers to the Borrego Springs area?
My last two cars, both CRVs, have been bought over the phone from one dealer and the same salesman. The first deal involved several phone calls for negotiation. The second deal just required one call of about 5 minutes. The second deal was done quickly because I had gotten prices from other dealers using the internet. I ask the dealer I preferred to match the price of other dealers and they did. I got the car I wanted from the dealer and salesman I wanted at a price I was happy with. (I must admit though, I paid more than $21,498):D
Enjoy both new Hondas.

Docsoma, that 21,498 is another remarkable price, maybe a couple hundred over the dealer net/net, depending upon whether the destination charges are $635 or the $670, as reported on Edmonds. I think American Honda raised them.
Let's see, I'll bet an influential professor, shaping hundreds of young peoples' minds (business people that will have a few bucks in their pockets), and singing the praises of two local dealerships, just might get a good deal on his vehicles at those dealerships, lol.
That car does look nice under the Cali sun.
I'm finding it very hard going in Ohio to get anywhere with most of these dealerships negotiating over the internet. I think they all want you to suffer in front of them so they can do their dog and pony show. And yes, they know I'm ready to buy, and I've actually offered considerably higher than the amount noted here.
Admittedly, being a car dealer is a tough, competitive, business, and it won't be getting any easier anytime soon. What I think is happening in Ohio, a state with a very poor economy, particularly outside of the Columbus area, is a real effort to try to maximize profit per unit at a time of anticipated sagging sales. There is nothing but talk of doom and gloom in this state. At some point, however, the fire sales that will be offered by the big 3 to move their heavy iron, will force even Honda to be more competitive. To many people cars are commodities, and in a commodity business, it's hard to be smarter than your dumbest competitor. (Of course everyone on this board knows they are NOT undifferentiated commodities, lol)

I am amazed how clueless ...even arrogantly stupid (same vector I suppose) many car dealers are. Here in San Diego County a large Honda dealer will sell in a year what Norm Reeves in Los Angeles will sell in a month. So the economics of large Los Angeles dealers clearly favor competitive pricing. Seriously it is quite fascinating to go to their "War Room" and see their salesman rankings. Each salesman is truly working for their meal ticket and act and behave like consummate professionals. A true pleasure to do business with the best.
That said, I think the fault also lies with buyers who do not do their homework and allow the dealer to yank them around.....Edmunds has a nice behind the scenes article on the sales business.
As a practical matter, find a dealer that is the volume dealer in your city..there has to be one. Commit that you will drive off with the car if they meet your price, but also that you will not deal with them if they come up with stupid numbers. Cars are just sku's to the dealer....but the particular sales person might be a newbie who was doing carpets last month and he may not know any better. But at good dealers, there are salesmen who have been at that dealer or in the business at least for 10 years or more. These guys are pros. Not angels, but they know the numbers and they have to move inventory. So if they smell a sale in an hour, they will move to a decision immediately.
I was lucky to have so much choice less than 2 hours drive away. San Diego dealers typically have inventories of any particular trim level in the single digits. Large LA dealers will have 50-60 of any particular trim level with 7-10 units of all major colors.

Just put a deposit on a 2008 CR-V EX 4WD for my wife. Found this forum through a google search looking into expected maintenance schedules. I figured I would share my shopping experience.
We test drove a CR-V at a local dealer and thought it hit the sweet spot of utility and efficiency. We were interested in an EX 4WD as we are in the northeast, MSRP $24,820 including destination. The salesman was useless and never even put any hard numbers in front of us. He gave us vague answers like "we can probably get you around $300/mo with $2k down", right.
So a few days later I used edmunds price quote tool here:
DealerLocator (http://www.edmunds.com/apps/dl/index.jsp)
This sent our request to four local Honda dealers. Most every Honda dealer will now have an "internet only" sales dept. Within a few hours I received quotes ranging from 23,185 to 23,391. They all specified that they were good for in stock vehicles through the end of the month. Already I was very pleased! After this I worked through e-mail, ignoring any phone calls and worked the dealers against each other. Sending a polite message stating a competitive area dealer's better price would result in them matching it or beating it by $100.
Finally I settled on a price of $22,985 + tax with the dealer only 5 minutes from my home and they included the first oil change. When I walked in the door the negotiated price was already on a form and I gave them a $100 deposit and a copy of my license and insurance card. We were set on a white CR-V and so they had to locate one. It is expected in off the truck at another dealer on Wednesday and we should be able to take delivery this week.
I'll post up some pics when we get the keys. :D

Posting deals is sometimes a trip into hell. But you did a lot better than I did, so good for you! Good luck with your Vs, and welcome to the club.
docsoma,
I shopped for my 08 CRV briefly in the San Diego area and gave up for the reasons you mentioned. High prices and low inventory. I didn't think to shop the LA market. And I could have easily even from my present home base in Oklahoma. Speaking of which, for a while the local rather small Honda dealership was selling cars all over the US, much to the benefit of local shoppers who got low pricing and great local service. Of course they can still have that if they are willing to buy the car in Houston, fly to Houston and drive it home. And I think that's good.
For what it's worth, I helped run a family owned construction business, and have worked with, and done a little consultation too, some very successful family owned businesses. Some of these successful businesses consistently worked the "high profit agenda" while some consistently worked the "high volume agenda".
In the construction business I think the end consumer, the building owners, benefited most from working with firms that worked the high profit agenda, the owners usually got a better product. But I think it is different with cars, especially Honda cars. Considering Honda's high initial build quality and their pretty good dealer network that generally provides great service after the sale (irregardless of where the car was purchased), I think the end consumer benefits most from trading with a company that works the high volume agenda. And I think that means more buying over the internet and phone.
Of course my Granddad would want to do it the old fashion way. This would involve sharing a flask with the salesman, a little inane and normally obscene conversation, and then some hard ball negotiating. And sometimes leaving the table having made a friend. Ah the good ol days.
Well as you can tell I've got too much time on my hands this morning. Guess I will go work the "getting the chores done" agenda.

Curbany you made an exceptional deal.
I paid 22,100 for "Car" to compare my price to yours apples to apples. My out the door price was approx. $23,800. Some people have claimed lower prices on Edmunds but I was skeptical of the prices they claimed to have paid.
MQuillen
07-03-2008, 09:18 AM
You're right Florida_Keith, you can't always trust what you see on the Edmond's site. People often get confused with what an "out the door" price is. For our purposes, people should list the base selling price, and they need to list ALL expenses, and ALL options, and taxes. Different tax rates, and Doc Fees can quickly cloud the calculations.
In Ohio, we have a maximum $250 Doc Fee (basically a state sanctioned profit center for the dealerships), that all dealerships have adopted as though it's a mandatory STATE expense (they even tell buyers that). It seems our wonderful Ohio politicians thought too many unsophisticated buyers were getting screwed by exhorbitant fees, so they decided to cap it at $250, lol. This Doc Fee is below the Total Car Price line and is allegedly not negotiable. California has a $55 Doc Fee, which seems more reasonable. Regardless, this is just a cost of doing business and should be rolled into the price of the car. They act like we're getting a home mortgage or something complex. For the average vehicle this amounts to about 1% profit. So at invoice price, in Ohio, between the holdback and the Doc Fee, dealerships are already getting 4% gross profit, or about $975. If you run the numbers on the CR-V EX AWD, $500 over invoice ends up being about 5.6% gross profit, for a total gross profit of around $1475 ($725 holdback +$500 profit+$250 Doc Fee).
I'm not saying this is fair or unfair, and for slow moving vehicles the holdback and Doc Fees can be a lifesaver for the dealership. Frustatingly, as we go through this period of slow sales for Ridgelines and Pilots, and even Accords, and potentially lower inventories for CR-V's (plants reallocating for Civic production) I envision some upward price pressure at the customer level on 2009 CR-V's, as dealerships try to subsidize their slower moving lines (just my opinion). I would hope that isn't the case just yet as dealers make way for the 2009 models, just around the corner.

vprojis,
I agree the price seems a bit high by today's numbers, but for a popular new model, and in a better economy than we have now, $500 over dealer invoice isn't bad. With 2009 models now in production, dealers now are quoting invoice for most models, with a little negotiating effort.
Curbany's price, when one adds in the $369 procurement fee, is essentially invoice price. Brosher's price is about $107 below invoice, on a model that is plentiful on most dealers' lots.
Some dealers are claiming a lack of leather models and they are reluctant to negotiate as much, but what they are doing is taking advantage of an opportunity to make a little more money off the customers that aren't as price motivated. With a little extra effort, leather models can now be had for around invoice as well.
Got the car for 23,600.00 + Taxes, NYS Inspection, and all other fees. (In New York)

New to the forum. Looks great and I look forward to posting.
Just bought (today) a 2008 CR-V EX 4WD for $23,479 OTD. Here's breakdown:
$22,000 (car price including destination)
$1,100 (5% Mass. sales tax)
$379 (doc fee/reg)
Bought from Herb Chambers Honda in Boston. I did an Internet only deal and finished over the phone. Not as much haggling as I expected. They started at $23,600, then went to $23,100, then to $22,600. I finally said $22,000 final and they agreed. I didn't think I'd be able to get it at this price and in the color I wanted. I was thinking I'd have to settle for the LX. Anyway, I'm very pleased and looking forward to picking it up in a few days.

I am new to this forum and absolutely love it!
I just purchased my new 2008 CR-V EX-L w/ no nav today and will pick it up on Wednesday. I can't wait!
I ended up paying $26000 w/o TT&L for the vehicle and the following accessories:
- Window Tint
- Exhaust Finisher
- Roof Rack
- Tailgate Spoiler
- Body Side Molding
- Cargo Area Cover
- Cargo Tray
- Running Boards
If anyone is looking for a CR-V in the DFW, Texas area, I highly suggest Huggins Honda as they are top notch! Go see Bob S. as he was the best!

Hello everyone,
I am new here and just bought the 2008 white CRV 2WD EX for $23,500.00 included sales tax, registeration and document fee from Norm Reeves Honda in California. My sales, Michael Do, was easy to deal with. No games. Speedy service.
Start to finish less than 1 hour (paper work). Additional 1 hour waited for detailing (it was Saturday, busy dealer).
BTW...I spent a few hours at this forum reading all kind of stuff before contacting the dealer. Thanks for the excellent information.

We Just bought my Mom's new CR-V through Metro Riverside Honda and got an LX 2WD for $19,700 including destination and doc fees but before taxes. My Mom lives in Seattle and none of the dealers up there would even come close to my SoCal price. Now, I get to drive it up to her later this week. Roadtrip!

Sdaniel, thats about $420 below invoice if we put dealer installed cost at $40 on the splash guards. It's not a bad price at this point in time for a leather model. The dealer still grossed about $630 on that deal when one considers the holdback and the $250 doc fee that virtually every dealer in Ohio charges.
Where I have a problem with Honda's 2008 pricing being so strong so late in the year, is that it is about the same as a well negotiated price for a 2009 Subaru Limited X.

Also, can anyone give me their thoughts and opinions on the Honda navigation system? Thanks

I read that the difference between 2WD & 4WD is about 1mpg. Was planning to get FWD to save on gas, but If it's only 1mpg I'd rather have the power to tackle the Canadian winter over here.
I'm payin $425/mo
Depends where you live. I have no need for AWD in Houston. If I lived up north in the inclement weather: I'd get the AWD. Regarding the NAVI; I like it but it is questionable on whether it is worth the extra $ 1500 or so. The programming of the user interface in the unit is poorly written and they missed the boat by not having built-in bluetooth capabilities.

Get a quote on Honda CR-V LX for $21,354.96 + Mudguards OTD from one of the local dealer in Orange County, CA. I am in the middle of getting another dealer to get $500 cheaper than $21,354.96.

Sticker price was $29,070 I paid $26,818 both prices includes dest charge, this price does not include state taxes, doc fee or plate transfer. I also had them put a silver Honda (H) logo with pinstrip for $150 after the sale. I also bought all weather floor mats, cargo tray, front splash, side mouldings, fog lights and rear spoiler from a on line dealer...major discount over the dealer. I couldn't be happier with my CR-V. I love it! :)

We just bought our new 2008 EX AWD in Royal Blue Pearl tonight. We got I'm so excited--we take delivery on Wednesday (day after tomorrow). MSRP was $24,820 and we paid $22826, including destination. Works out to be about $325 under invoice. Dealer doc fees were $197.
We're pretty happy with the deal and are THRILLED with the dealer we chose. For anyone in Central NJ, Princeton Honda was amazingly easy to work with. We did an internet deal and worked with Chris Wells. I would definitely recommend him to anyone I know. Or anyone I don't know, for that matter :p
We did our financing through Capital One Auto Financing and their "Blank Check" program. It couldn't have been easier. No documentation, instant decision, best rates around.
Overall, I'm thrilled with my new car and I'm extremely satisfied with how easy the entire purchasing and financing process has been.

We're in NJ and I've had enough of driving in the winter without 4WD. I love the way 4WDs handle in slippery/wet/snowy weather so for us it was a safety/driving security issue. Of course 4WD isn't a license to drive 65 miles in the left lane during a NE blizzard. It always amazes me when we see people doing things like that!!

We got AWD because no one could seem to locate an 08 2WD EX-L w/Nav in White! We got an 08 AWD EX-L w/Nav in white for $25,880 plus Tax, Tag and Doc fees! We're happy with our deal, and even though we probably won't need AWD, it was a lot more vehicle for the money at the expense of only 1 MPG Highway! We figure resale value should be better as well with the AWD!

The dealer that I just bought my CR-V from had exactly what you were looking for. Searching the dealers around the Columbus, OH area, the best I could do on my 4WD EX-L was $25,400 + Tax, Title and Doc fees. Not bad, but it appears that in most other areas, the deals are a bit better.

Illini, the central Ohio market can be a challenge. There aren't many dealers given our population. In the city of Columbus (population 730k), there are 4 dealerships positioned in 4 quadrants, almost equidistant around the outerbelt. I had to go beyond Columbus proper to get a decent deal. Some of the dealers are downright arrogant and rude, in my opinion.
In mid August, after about 3 months of talking to various dealers, I purchased a CR-V EX-L AWD for $24,841, before TTL--$26,800 out the door. I wouldn't even be mentioning this but it appears you haven't taken delivery yet. If you like I'll be glad to give you the dealer's name via a private message.

MQuillen, thanks. I'm actually very new to Columbus. Just moved here 5 months ago. I was commenting to my sales person that the Columbus metro area could support far more Honda dealerships than were around. Obviously being near Marysville, it seems as if one of every two cars on the road here are Hondas. I'm sure I'm wrong, but I wonder if these dealers talk to each other. All quoted within $300 of each other. I talked to the 4 around Columbus plus Marysville. Thanks for the offer, but unless my dealer comes back to me and say he can't get what I want (I required them to get my CR-V with less than 100 miles), I'll probably stick with the dealer I'm working with. Although the $550 would be a nice savings, I'm trading my current vehicle in and what I would gain in buying from your dealership, I may lose on the trade in. I've been trying to sell my Trailblazer privately for the last 2 months with no luck. I'll PM you if I change my mind or have some questions for you.

No problem. There are more things to a good deal than just the base price of the vehicle being purchased, and trade-in value is indeed one of them. If you haven't already done so, you might also consider benchmarking the trade-in value against what CarMax (Dublin area) will offer. Good luck on your new CR-V.

We live in southeastern PA (Philly 'burbs). We know we could have gotten a little bit lower but after days of negotiations with several dealerships, we got tired and figured we had a decent price on the table and decided to take it and be done. Anyway, here's the breakdown:
Vehicle Price: 23,299
+Gap Insurance, State Sales Tax, Registration, Title, Documentary Fee, Online Reg. Fee, & State Tire Tax: 25,204
OH YEAH, that's a AWD EX 5AT

The wheels are a pricey option.
Don't think I'm forgetting anything. Is $38,000 too much? St. Louis area.

McGrath Honda of St Charles, IL
Experience: Everyone was fantastic! Very highly recommended!
2008 CR-V EX-L AWD
Honda Invoice $24,837.00 (no destination fee)
MSRP: $26,700.00 (no destination fee)
Dealer's base price (no destination fee): $24,314.00
Destination fee: $670.00
Base price + destination fee: $24,984.00
Options:
-- Protection package - wheel locks, cargo tray, mudflaps: $0.00
-- Free car washes for life
Tax (7%): $1,761.00
Transferred plates: $105.00
Documentaion fees: $150.00
Other "BS" dealer fees: None!
Final OTD price: $27,000.00 (no financing)
This final price was the initial offer from the sales manager, and was cheaper in OTD price by $200+ compared to 8 other local Honda dealerships. Also, he was the only one to offer any included options, and the Protection Package is variably priced from $500 to $800 from what I've seen. There was no haggling involved, and there was no funny business when it came time to finalizing the deal -- greatly appreciated considering how much of a headache this whole process can be.
Off to enjoy my CR-V! :)

In my experience, the only way of knowing whether you have a good deal is to be able to drive away from the dealership without the salesperson running after you. Offer a decent price, but one that you don't expect them to accept, and stick to it. You'll get a series of progressively lower prices until they won't go lower. At that point say you'll try to get your price elsewhere, and leave. If no one stops you, you have a pretty good idea of best price you can get from that dealership.
When you give them your price, be very specific about what is to be added to the price (e.g., tax) to compute the "out-the-door" price. (No documentation fee, etc.) Make sure the salesperson writes that down on the paper he takes to the sales manager. If you make a deal, make sure the business office doesn't try sneak in extra fees (due to "misunderstandings", of course).
To save time and reduce the annoyance factor, tell the salesperson you do not want any "add-ons", like undercoating, paint protection, etc. Have him or her write that on the sales document.

Hey guys, new here and on the verge of purchasing an '08.
Is $29,500 OTD a fair price on a new '08 EX-L 4WD w/Nav?
Here's the breakdown:
26,708 - Cost of Vehicle
2,484 - Sales Tax (9.25%)

Delivered July 01 after 5 weeks wait for fresh from the factory
CR-V LX 4WD in Glacier Blue Metallic:
Selling Price, cash, no trade: ----- $20,703
New Hampshire title application ------- 027
Admin fee including temp plates_______220
Delivered out the door-------------$20,950
There is no state tax in NH but the towns have a registration fee based on a percentage of the NADA value. It decreases yearly and by the time it is about 7 years old it is only about $40.
My CR-V was made in East Liberty Ohio on or after June 18th as far as I can tell from date codes on a few parts. Actually it was supposed to be made in Japan but that is what Honda US delivered after about a month’s wait.
One visible advantage of the Japanese CR-V I test drove was it had some rust-proofing that the Ohio ones do not! Let’s not get into the possible better workmanship. On the other Hand it feels good to support US workers. With the Dollar exchange as it was I’m surprised there were any imported Vs from Japan at all!
In any event I am very happy with mine with the exception of the paint in a few areas. The color coat is thin and the primer shows thru around the door panels in some areas and just above the black rocker panel covers in a few spots. You really need to look for it; the casual observer would not see it. Other than that the V is practically defect free! That is unless you count as a manufacturing defect a slight pucker on the back of one of the rear seats.
Everything works as it should so far. No rattles, no vibrations, and it has a nice very firm ride.
On a recent 200 mile trip I got 27.8 MPG going by the MM. It will probably get better since it is not broken in yet.

I have been quoting the 08 models, but looks like dealers cannot go too far below invoice at this time. The best I could get is several hundred below invoice.
I was thinking since it's end of year (today is 10/24), Honda should have some rebates/incentives so dealers can go $1-1.5K below invoice.... I guess not yet, so I am planning to wait until Nov/Dec. Is this the right strategy, or am I dreaming that they can go $1-1.5K below invoice?
Even the current deal of 3.9% APR is not competitive compared to Toyota's .9% for Rav4! The market is not doing well, they got to do better than that, right!? ;)

E90 M3,
There must be a glut of '08 CR-Vs that they must move to make room for the ‘09s! I have never heard of this. Where are you located? WOW!
With less than 100 miles on the ODO? Any more than that and I do not personally consider it a fresh vehicle. It would have been probably test driven over 20 times. And you do not want to buy one after I test drove it! The engine is not broken in for full throttle and you can get hotspots on the rotors if you try to get a feel for stopping distance…
My V had under 10 miles and about 4-6 was put on during the delivery checks. Although at that reduction most people would not care too much as long as it had under a few hundred miles. Just a personal quirk of mine. If I am buying a vehicle for $20,950 out the door (the ‘08 LX 4WD) then it must have near zero miles or to me it is no longer fresh…it may have been abused!
Is this below the OEM sticker invoice at the port or assembly or a secondary inflated invoice that the dealer came up with after adding on some extras like zone or regional advertising charges, fabric protection, oil changes or whatever they can add to make it look like a great deal.
At $1-1.5K below true invoice the dealer cannot possibly be making any profit even after kickbacks or hold backs whatever you want to call them. Not on $20K-25K MSRP vehicles.
That is over 6-7% below invoice! WOW

Radar24-
Are they lowballing you on the trade? I had a Toyota dealer go $900 below invoice on a '09 RAV4 but then offer me a terrible deal on my trade. When I questioned their tactics (even said well maybe I'll just buy the RAV and sell my trade on my own) they got visibly disturbed and shook my hand and said they were sorry they couldn't sell me a car today and showed me the door.
Wow.
Just got an '08 EX FWD for ~$100 under invoice with a trade at KBB price. And they treated me well, so I'm now a Honda convert. :)
They did try and sell me $750 worth of dealer added options, which I flat out denied from the start and said I wasn't paying for them. In the end I got them anyway but wasn't charged.
It is a good time to buy a car.

schwing29,
There was no low balling. There was no trade. I have never traded in since the 70's when I bought my first car having none to trade. Read carefully. The 6-7% below invoice is what I calculated <e90_m3> would be getting with the rather ODD numbers that he described.
I paid $20,950 for a CR-V LX RT 4WD fresh of the truck with under 10 miles at delivery. Out the door with no trade and nothing else added! I picked it up on July 1st so it cannot be compared to deal made in October with the '09 already out. I would expect at least $700 to $900 for any V leftover on the lot. And it would not be fresh in all likelihood.
I sold my wife's '04 Corolla myself at $11,500 or just above private sale Edmunds FMV for a vehicle in excellent condition. In Craig's list & Toyota offered
us 0% for three years so the only overhead was the sweat effort my wife and I put into detailing it! We paid $15,700 (no trade too, 5 miles on the ODO) so it depreciated $4100 and we had it over 4.5 years. If you do the math it ran about $933/year depreciation. I was happy with that and so was the new buyer of the Corolla.
I doubt that the dealer would have given me even in the high $9K. Probably $9.5 K - they never saw it.
I do not believe in trades. I've never had any problems selling a car.
My understanding is that dealers have to make at least $750 and prefer to get $1500 or more profit one way or another. A lot of the profit is from hidden holdback (?), warranty, added accessories or discounts on future purchases based on sales volume. Near the end of the month is the best time to buy if they need to make the next bracket in volume sales for future allocations or holdback . In my case with a ~$700 holdback they made $900-1000 on my V.
Not sure how much of this is urban legend.
Not the greatest of deals but a fair deal for an ordered FRESH CR-V exactly as you want it.
Any opinions?

Umm...Radar24, what makes you think any 08s leftover in late oct/early nov couldn't possible be "fresh"? I just test drove an 08 EX 4WD with 3 miles on it. And the dealer had 20 remaining 08s. The Milwaukee area has 6 Honda dealers (pretty many for this medium sized city) and they all are sitting on a glut of 2008 CR-Vs.
Like the guy a few posts up, I'm serious about buying but haven't been able to break the 22,800 barrier on a 2008 EX 4WD (not including ~$120 service fee, and TTL but including dest.). There probably others like me waiting for the Nov incentives to see if Honda is serious about moving them. I may end up just saying "screw it" and take the lowest offer i've gotten. But I'd be pissed if Honda opened the floodgates to those just waiting, and gave them customer cash ($500 even?).

insomniac59,
Then you hit the lottery! What makes you think you can find a fresh ’08 CR-V LX 4WD in Glacier Blue at our dealer in Nashua NH? Or anywhere nearby. I once had to drive 85 miles one way to get what I wanted. Then again to pick it up and this was in early August. Around production model year change it becomes very hard to find what one wants. Now it is different due to the economy but not everywhere.
That many fresh leftover CR-Vs is not realistic in one of the hottest Honda markets in the US; New England. So I was told at the Honda dealer. When I looked in April if you wanted a specific color they may have been scarce. I had to drive close to 40 miles just to see the Gold, Green and Light Blue all in one dealer for comparison. Glacier Blue is in high demand in this area. As I was told, they were on the average selling 3 a day in our small dealer in a town of about 86,000. We checked every few days to see if anything fresh arrived in our color and most of the previous visit’s CR-Vs had a sold sign or were gone. Some days (typically after a weekend) they only had one or none LX 4WD left. Except for EX Black 4WD; they seemed to have more of them than any other color. So we ended up ordering one built in Japan with a 6-8 week wait. Those made in Japan that I saw all had waxy undercoating. Not so for the US CR-Vs. I never saw a Canadian or English made one so I cannot say about those.
About week 5 we got a call and the identical one we ordered came in but from E. Liberty, Ohio with no factory rust proofing or undercoating. I was concerned I would not find another LX 4WD in our color so we took delivery anyway.
I have not checked recently but my guess is any truly fresh ’08 CR-Vs are long gone by now. The economy in NH, Mass and maybe even Maine is going strong I just recently heard in the news. Unemployment is relatively low too.
In any event in April the ’08 EX 4WD was selling in the low $23K out the door with $0 added in no state tax NH. So if 6 months later you find the one that you like and saving $500 in comparison is what you are looking for, go for it. Around here if you want to save more by waiting you will not have much of a choice. Never mind it being fresh.

HockeyFan,
A fresh vehicle around here is the term used for one that has not been test driven and has a very recent manufacturing date. Sort of like opening the box yourself as opposed to buying 'open box'.

Our mailman told me yesterday how much he paid for his ’08 CR-V EX. 1st he asked how we liked our ’08 LX. So I asked him if he minded telling us how much he paid. $20,600 which is about $2000 under invoice for a FWD. He said he had to travel all the way to Boch Honda 15 miles south west of Boston – about 120 miles from where he lives. No dealer in NH could touch that price he said. Boch is a huge Toyota, Scion, Honda, Ferrari and Maserati dealer in Norwood Mass. They also sell used high ticket luxury and collectables. He said Boch is the largest volume Honda dealer in the entire US but don’t most dealers make similar claims?
Then I looked at their inventory. They have 207 CR-Vs most of them ‘09s. All but 6 of the 207 are 4WD. Only one ’08 EX FWD is left over with a mix of another 32 ’08 EX and EX-L.
insomniac59,
No ‘08 XL at all in stock just as I thought.
About 17 out of 207 have a sale pending sign. I suppose that means that Boch has a deposit and they are not available. At that rate if it takes 3 days on average to sell one then they sell about 50 a week. Or they have a month's worth of CR-V inventory .
Interesting?

Fair enough...not disagreeing that CR-Vs are in high demand in your area, just not seeing it here. I'm not saying they're not selling here either because dealers are steadily chipping away at their 08 inventory. They should be mostly gone by the end of the year. Most dealers have very few 09s at this point and one in particular has none at all which makes me think that they probably have them on a storage lot somewhere until 08s are mostly gone.

Dealer-added extras included in the price above:
roof rack
cargo tray
tire locks
pin-striping
mudflaps
Not included in the price: I added the 8/120 extended warranty for $1,995.

I considered not responding but here goes, unless it is 4WD and you are concerned about the rear diff, why spend 2 grand for an extended warranty on one of the most reliable cars made? One that may require servicing religiously by Honda, is void if you miss any mandatory service and if you for whatever reason do not keep it untill you might start needing it at 100k, you will never get to use it? Sh_t happens so the odds you will have it past 100K miles are not in your favor even if you intend to keep it? If it was a GM or other manufacturer with poor reliability as rated by CU I might see it. Even then I would take my chances. Sorry, Just my unsolicited opinion.
Extended warrantees are nothing but insurance. Only if one cannot afford the loss in general is there any point in insuring. That is how the insurance company makes money. Odds are it will not be needed or the car is sold or is totaled on the average so it is profitable to offer the warranty. Sort of like going to a casino. The odds are not in your favor!
And what about those deductibles? Like $100 to fix a $200 problem. Worse still a $75 problem that takes only one hour to fix. Enough of those and you end up not saving all that much in the long run even if it does breaks down. Are you aware how much the dealer makes on this warranty? Probably close to $1000.
Sorry but I rarely buy them for appliances that tend to break down and even rarer is it worth it. Often the extended waranty never gets used has been my personal experience.
Maybe for peace of mind…I’d rather lose a little sleep for that amount :D

Hi...I am a first time buyer and looking forward to buy a CRV. I test drove the 08 CRV EX-L at Bloomington,IL. The dealer had couple of 08 CRVs left with EX-L. I liked the black one with tan interior. I had a good impression after testdriving the CRV. I have been reading this form for last 2 months and I have been looking at the consumers paid prices. Most of them has paid less than the invoice price for an 08 model. I think many of them has testdriven this CRV and it has 110miles on it. The dealer gave me a deal like below
Invoice price - $25,501 includes $670 destination charges
splashguards - $89
Total: $25,590 plus below
documentation fee $150
Electronic filing fee $10
Tax: 6.75%
I asked for 24,670 and the dealer was not ready to give it. They were arguing so much that they cannot lose money selling below the invoice price. I need your suggestions to decide whether dealer has given me a good deal. Thanks !!

Lachu23,
It all depends on how may CR-Vs are left and how many suitors there are after them in your neck of the woods. Or are anticipated by the dealer. There is always someone willing to pay more, and some don’t allow any room for the dealer to make a profit! It needs to be reasonable. On the other hand it has one year’s extra depreciation you should take into account.
The alternative is to offer $500 over invoice on an '09 and based on one year's less depriciation you might be ahead. Even though you pay more to begin with IMO.
The tan interior although my favorite is not a big seller since it gets dirty easy. That is why it is still there. Go back after you find another dealer with the same identical or equivalent deal for less and see if they will match +/- $50.
While fluff the $150 documentation fee is low based on what they charge around here. It pays for all the miscellaneous costs involved in the sale and at that figure leaves them a low margin. So dealers charging more can afford to discount more. It all comes out in the wash so to speak.
The tax does not enter into the equation. But it makes me feel good I'm in one if not the only state without any sales tax. On anything but on eating out (~8%, OUCH, but if you can eat out you can afford it) and hospitality industry (?%).
I have no idea of the actual incentives; Consumers Union (Consumer report) will for $14 let you know all holdbacks, incentives, rebates etc and invoice prices on all factory installed options current at that date. In the case of Honda possibly all dealer installed accessories since there are only a couple of options. There is also a lot of other information in the package. Call 1-866-350-7889 or ConsumerReports.org for an instant copy.
One hundred miles is not bad, still considerably fresh IMO. For my money on the other hand I insist on being the one to break it in with the typical 3-6 miles on the clock as delivered by the car hauler. Sort of like opening the box as opposed buying one already opened??? At over $25K investment I do not think it is much to ask for. Isn't that what demos are for?
You do not want to buy one after I test drive it; I find it necessary to put it thru it’s paces to get a good feel for how it runs not just during normal Granny driving. There are a lot of other test drivers like me I suppose. At 100 miles at least 10 test drives have taken place.
Do you feel lucky?

plamlam,
Sounds not bad this early in the model year! How many miles on it? I bought end of April ’08 so the market has changed a lot. I ordered at around invoice +/- a couple of hundred $s having to wait about 5 weeks for the color we wanted and a fresh CR-V made in June. We paid $20,950 delivered out the door on July 1st for an LX 4WD. There is no state tax in NH so it is not included. We did not get any non-sense warranty or any options. Just your basic LX 4WD as made by Honda in East Liberty Ohio. Before the market crash!
Selling around invoice seems to be getting common these days without too much haggling. Depending on how many cars the dealer has in inventory, the number of buyers and the time of the month of course.
Four to five years ago Elements were selling at or very near MSRP here in NH!
Most everyone is savvy about invoice so I am inclined to think that prices have been sort of adjusted so that the published invoice does not truly reflect the real cost to the dealers. There are hold-backs and discounts on future purchases based on the sales volume etc. Toward the end of the month the dealer might be more inclined to sell at a lower profit to meet a quota or get a better allotment in the future. That is if for example if they can get an additional x% discount by moving let’s say 20 more cars at invoice or just below then that makes perfectly good business sense.
On the other hand if Honda is really hurting with a glut of CR-Vs then you might be able to do better. But keep in mind the dealer has to make a living too and you want them to be around for service in the future! They do not want to get fleeced any more than you do.
Will a couple of hundred dollars one way or the other make that much a difference on a $25,000 purchase? Sure it is nice to have the savings but IMO the dealer’s reputation, service quality, skill and honesty is more important than a couple hundred dollars +/-.

A price with trade complicates figuring out the true cost. The dealer borrows from Peter to pay Paul kind of thing.
Did you try Boch Honda just outside Rt-128 about 15 miles SW of Boston?
My mailman got a great deal there on his '08 CR-V EX in October. Only one other '08 2WD left two or three weeks ago. About 33 more '08s CR-V 4WD all of them EX and EX/L back then. No LXs at all. Over 250, yes 250 '09 CR-Vs.

Your instincts might be correct. Things change with time sometimes … but sometimes they don’t.
I do not know all the details about my mailman’s deal. Here is a summary of the dealings as retold by him.
Basically he got a quote over the phone. After no other dealer in NH would touch or match Boch’s price he drove all the way from the seacoast of NH to Boch Honda.
When he got there Boch tried to pull the similar stunt that they pulled on me in ’88 when I was looking for an ’88 Camry All-Trac LE 4 cyl 5speed at Boch Toyota. Anyhow when both I and the Mailman got there the story changed. In his case the delivery fee (~$630) was disputed as being included in the quote. The Mailman insisted and was very irate about driving close to 150 miles. Boch eventually brought out the recording of the original phone conversation. Boch eventually apologized, admitted that the Mailman was correct after playing the taped conversation, eventually giving in. I do not remember the particulars but it was over $2,000 under invoice. Not knowing if anything else was added such as warranty or options the $2,000 under is questionable. I do not consider that a good number unless absolutely nothing else is added that may increase their profit margin.
Is Boch Sleazy? Maybe.
In my case I drove 30-40 miles during lunch after getting a quote over the phone significantly lower than anyone in NH. Same deal as the Mailman.
When I got there, OH NO! The price went up about $600 after some dealing (I hate this). More or less the same amount disputed by the mailman. Since the car as I wanted it was very scarce, there was a price increase by Toyota on all new cars made after a certain date, and after test driving it you get the WHAT A FEELING, TOYOTA…Plus there were others eye balling it - in line waiting to test drive it – I eventually said screw it. Boch won. I get what I wanted +/- a few hundred $s. Even then it was not a bad price. It was not a great price but I got to break it in and not someone else. Very important to me - Kept it for 19 years.
Bottom line you may have to go thru a lot of aggravation with Boch as they seem to still be playing the same little game. Even after 20 years!

lachu23,
I thought it looked really nice but my wife hated that color combo! A little flashy, I just really loved the interior color. In leather! How orgasmic! It doesn't get any classier and natural looking. If given a choice of Tea Green or Borrego Beige (Gold), the only colors in ’08 with the tan interior, the Gold wins hands down.
Congrats, you will love it more and more as you drive it and really begin to appreciate the ergonomics. It will begin to fit like a glove after Oh say a couple hours. Or minutes!
Remember to avoid new blue or dark colored jeans just in case so the dye does not rub-off on the light colored leather. Treating the leather might help in that department; so it does not stain or crack.
I have had good results with Lexol leather conditioner. Just wipe it on, rub it in and remove the excess. Google reviews to make sure it is still a good choice. Do a test where the sun don't shine just in case the treatment might darken the leather. Let it dry before evaluating color shifts.
I doubt you could have done any better. With those claiming they paid less there is probably a catch. Such as higher miles on the clock, noises the dealer is aware off but cannot attempt to fix until it is sold (and might have difficulty doing so), extended warranty or maintenance was purchased, the dealer was 150 miles away… You get the idea. There is a lot to be said for the convenience of a local dealer.
Plus you need to leave a little profit for the dealer or they won't be around when you need them. :)

We had been looking at 2008 CR-V 4WD LX and had a dealer let us walk away because he wouldn't go lower than 21000 (before 7.25% California tax). They had called us and told us 22,000 out the door INCLUDING tax and when we showed up the next day, they said that deal wasn't good anymore.
Anyway, long story short, they tried to push us on a 2009 FWD LX for 21000, but we had had enough at that point because 4WD was important to us, and we felt lied to.
Fast forward to this week. We wandered into another dealer and were shown a 2008 CR-V 4WD EX. We ended up buying it for 22500 (before the tax). I figured that the increase from FWD to 4WD was about $1000 or a little more. We had been shopping on and off for either a Toyota Rav-4 or a CR-V, but after driving the CR-V it was our favorite.
I guess it was a tad bit impulsive to buy the car without fully researching the price for the EX...it just felt like a good deal.
$22,500 for a 2008 CR-V 4WD EX. Thoughts?
Radar24

JasonMarisa,
Working backwards; the price differences for a '09 4WD LX an 4WD EX is $2,250.
Assuming that is the same difference as for the '08 LX and EX, then if you paid $22,500 for the EX by subtracting the same $2,250 that equates to paying $20,250 for the LX.
That definitely is considerably less than the $21,000 you did not want to pay for the LX by $750. So assuming they are both in the same condition and have the same mileage that is a gooder deal :) .
The price is whatever the market will bear. That is a general rule of thumb if not a principle. Some areas are higher than others based on supply and demand. One dealer might have 5 and another 25 in another area. Thus these internet comparisons can be misleading. I paid so and so but it was not revealed a warranty or maintenance contract was bought too! So $1000 under invoice is misleading if $1995 was paid for the warranty. Since the warranty is ~50% profit in reality the actual price was around invoice and not $1000 under.
There are internet Honda warranties offered at just about 50% off the typical dealer prices. I was offered one at $1995 at purchase time not to be available at a later date. The internet price is $985 without a deductible for 8 yrs/100 k miles. Depending on your present mileage the price may vary of course prices.
Not that I recommend anyone get an extended warranty. We buy Hondas because they are reliable so why should we buy an extended warranty that odds are we will not need? After all it is just insurance and if it is sold by Honda you better believe that they make money on the average. Even if it is tempting at half the cost!
Trade-ins totally cloud the picture even further. Dealers tend to borrow from Peter to pay Paul. Or they make the price look better by giving you less for the trade in. And vice versa. In reality the deal is no different or can even be worse in some cases.
Seems you did well for your area. The dealer needs to make a living too!
I think almost everyone may have second thoughts after a big purchase. I generally do anyhow.
I say let’s not worry so much about something you can’t change and already bought.
Hind sight is 20/20. So I say let’s just enjoy our new CR-V!

I didn't think I got taken at all. I knew I was in the ballpark of what current deals where...at least I thought I was!
I heard a story that dealers are currently making between $500 and $1000 on the sale of a vehicle.
My guess is that they are making profits on extended warranty, security system, and hidden fees.
I had them remove a $299.00 fee that was put on the contract. It was some sort of security insurance that paid me $2500 if the car got stolen. I got the same coverage for $10 every six months from Allstate.
I also turned down something called "The Silencer" which hung on the keychain and prevented theft....very much like the microchip in the keychain.
Plus, I turned down the extended warranty for $1400.
The person signing us up said that "they sell 100% of these" as if that may change my mind. Oh well. They got a bit agitated. What can you do.
It's amazing. Let's just say they make $1000 profit on the sale. If I had went for everything "extra" their profit jumps to $3000.

jasonmarisa,
I never thought or thought you thought you were taken.
Reading between the lines, can that ever get me into trouble doing that with my wife, :) it sounded like you were in an “I didn’t do my research - could I have gotten a better deal?” frame of mind.
I heard that a dealer likes to be in the $1500 or higher profit margin but will drop as low as $750 for various reasons. Any lower and they cannot stay in business. Being toward the tail end of the month your dealer might have needed to meet a quota to get allocated more vehicles the following month. Fewer cars allotted – less profit.
In your case by turning down or refusing the bogus “Security Insurance” (I never heard of that one) and “The Silencer” (nor that one) plus the extended warranty (sounds like only a 6 year/75k warranty, they offer all different choices on line) the dealer ended up with a very low profit margin.
Around here the salesman is very low key at most dealers. With what appears to be an advocate for the buyer attitude, “It is just that the manager…blah, blah…” Good cop, bad cop kind of thing. Then after you sign on the dotted line, when delivery day comes you end up going through a gauntlet of this and that title manager or financial types. Each with offers of all kinds of high profit add-ons. “I have to go through this formality…I won’t take long…this is a good deal”. In my case it was the extended warranty and then ”since you have to do so any way the maintenance contract we offer at our SD is a good deal just on the on oil changes...like car washes by pre-buying x oil changes for $xyz...and you save even more purchasing yz oil changes”. I forgot the details as I kind of tuned them out politely saying no thank you – I have been doing that myself for the past 40 years.
Not exactly high pressure but if they have a percentage of the exited buyers say yes to protect their new shinny vehicle, that is a potential huge additional profit. Many buyers cave in under the heat of the moment. They are starry eyed wanting to protect their shinny new vehicle. Their rational thinking is overwhelmed and they say yes.

Bought a CR-V TDCi 2.2 Sport late 2005 with 22,000 on the clock for Ł6550 at auction here in the UK just over a week ago. Full Honda service history, 1 owner. Main dealer price is 10K. No warranty or anything, but hey, it is a bargain nonetheless.
The auction prices have slumped here at the mo. You could have had the same model with 60K on the clock for Ł5700...

Hey all, new member here. Obviously we always wonder if we got a great deal. I just bought a brand new CRV my very first Honda, and I kind of like to knwo whether or not i got a good deal. I paid out the door $21,288. I am in California and obviously my sales tax is higher here. But I wanted to know if it was a good deal.
I also got suckered into getting the KARR alarm system. Which was around $495 on top of the $21,288. I considered the lojack which wasl ike 150 or 200 more, but I went with the alarm. Can anybody add in their 2 cents, and let me know what everyone thinks. Thanks!

If you already bought it what is the point of torturing yourself?
We know it is 2WD. It depends on if it was an LX or EX and '08 or '09. Without knowing the sales tax it makes it difficult too.
I have heard of incredible discounts recently due to the glut of vehicles in some areas. In others not the same case; as if there was almost no recession.

I didn't mean literaly. Although thinking about if your deal was or was not a good one is a form of low level torture IMO. Been there, done that many times. Usually not long after the newness wears away.
MSRP = $21,245 (from Edmunds.com)
S/H 670
Tax 1,806 (assuming no tax on S/H)
$23,721
You paid $21,288 out the door. So the discount was $2,433
From Edmunds.com:
$23,701 is the TMV + TAXES
This TVM from Edmunds’ does not seem realistic! $314 under MSRP seems very high in this economy. With your Zip Code it might be a little more accurate.
Working up from Invoice ŕ $22,396 (MSRP + S/H) + 1,846 (tax on 21,725) = $23,571
So basically you paid $2,284 under invoice if you paid out the door $21,288 (including taxes). Sounds like highway robbery to me! I do not think you could do much better. Unless I made a wrong assumption and out the door to you does not include taxes. Remember the dealer has to make a living and I do not think Honda is giving them away to the dealers.
You do want Honda and the dealers to be in business when it comes time to have it repaired or parts are needed? Don’t you?

I want to buy a 09 CR-V in the middle Tennessee area. Are there any owners from this area that know some market rates?
We're in the market for 09 black LX FWD edmonds shows $20318 TMV with demand decreasing slightly for my area. I went to one dealer today, they offered 21975 +doc fees and taxes.<--- Feel that is kinda high, but was not serious when I was there. I called another and offered 20000 flat. That dealer had to find the one (color int/ext black) we want and speak with boss. He got back to me, but had not talked to boss. wife and I were out of time to deal today. so I told him I might come in Saturday.
local taxes are 7%
So you think this price is ok? or do you think I can move up to EX for this price?
Radar24

wasabinimja,
The prices vary a lot depending on supply in that area and a specific dealer.
Things as they are today, I would think you can get close to $20,000 you are shooting for. Possibly even below if they need to move the Vs to make room for new deliveries.
I found the best results were to go thru the Honda web site and fill out a request for quotes. Several dealers will respond. If they are just 'fishing for a big kill', just write to them telling them when you want it, what you want and how much you want to pay.
Always work up from invoice. Actually today from $500 to $1000 below invoice. Again it all depends on supply. Not sure they can go that low. The minute you start having them seriously compete dealer to dealer you will start seeing some lower prices. They will generally match OR be well within a hundred dollars of each other. The key is to zero in on the lowest price and most of the others will come around too. Unless they are way over loaded with that model. Once again it is all about supply and demand.
BTW my '08 LX was OTD $20,900 in July '08. No tax in NH. Today an '09 should easily be $500 less than that.
Finally I looked at FMV figures in Edmond's a few days ago and they do not seem realistic. They seem high.

OK the latest offer i have is for 21005, that is an online offer from dealer. The other dealer that offered 21975 had 10 to 15 at least on the lot but just one or two in the colors we want. so maybe tomorrow and Monday we might go to the lots and see what we can get them down to. remember these are all for the 2wd LX model
Radar24

wasabininja,
The online offer sound close to what I paid. But it is about $105 higher. I do not think the price has gone up so in this economy I really think they can go considerably lower. Just to keep merchandise moving. It does not make any sense.
Remember the $20,900 I paid is OTD but without taxes for an LX 4WD! We do not have any in NH.
(Edit) Never mind, yours is 2WD. There is no comparison! Something really does not make sense. That would make yours [$105 + (4WD - 2WD) MSRP] higher! (end edit)
Unless that is a popular color and they only have one. Why would they sell it to you for $20,500 when they think they can get $21,500?
My purchase was no trade, cash, in July. IE I got a loan from my credit union and paid the dealer with a cashiers check. It never sat around on the lot accruing interest. All these things have to be taken into account.
If your situation is similar, I would try to get the $21,005 down to $20,605. Then use that as leverage at the dealer that had more but was higher. I think they will generally match.
Good luck.

Hi all,
Since this board seems to be such a good and useful resource, I wanted to contribute my little bit to it.
About 2 weeks ago we bought a 2009 CR-V 4WD EX-L w/Navigation in Irving, TX. Black on Black. I haven't actually seen the car yet, since I am back in the Pacific Northwest, but my wife took delivery of the car last Monday and is pretty happy with it.
The dealer's no haggle price was $26,431.48 before destination ($670), TT&L and options. That was the easy part.
We also had an additional charge for transporting the car in from El-Paso TX, 650 miles away by flatbed (so it had only 8 miles at delivery). It was the only exact match in a 3-state area. (or so I was led to believe, but the sales man at a different dealer couldn't find one at all). The car is for my wife, so some things (shipping by flatbed instead of driving it to Dallas) were not worth hassling over.
In Texas, the dealers had very, very few 4WD CR-V's on the lot. As few as one or two per dealer total. I have just moved out to the very hilly Seattle area for a new job, and my wife will be moving out here this summer, so getting 4WD/AWD was a big deal to us. (In the recent snow/ice storms, I was trapped, unable to get my RWD car up the hill to leave my apartment for 3 days!).
We added 8 dealer options while insisting that there be no pin-stripes, fabric sealant, etc. What we got was:
1) Roof Rack
2) Short Roof Box (We have a roof box for her old car which has proven most useful on trips)
3) Black Side steps (we have 2 young kids)
4) Front Splash guards
5) Moonroof Visor (MiL's Acura TL has one, wife wanted it)
6) Trailer Hitch/Tow Package (Wife has a motorcycle she occasionally has to haul)
7) All Season Mats
8) Cargo Tray (good for her pottery supplies)
They started out by quoting prices for the options that were higher than the Honda website, so I countered with them and got the website prices (which say installation not included, *sigh*) and about $450 for installation of all (well, except for the mats).
They also managed to hit us up for tinted front side windows ($200, the wife was pissed about the way they did it, but she really wanted them). As long as they used a good tint/contractor instead of the cheap stuff, I'll be ok with it.
Our bottom line total broke $31k (I can't find the numbers right now, seems like 31.5 ish), but I felt it was ok. They gave some on the base price and did ok on the options and probably made a little on the shipping too. There literally wasn't time to haggle more, as I had a flight to catch immediately after the deal and financing was signed.
We passed on the extended warranty from the dealer at purchase time, dodging all their standard pitches and warnings. I plan on purchasing a Hondacare extended warranty (8/120/0) from a dealer online in the next couple months. Any advice on who to purchase from?
It's our first Honda. Previous to this, my wife has had two BMW 5-series station wagons (525i and 540i). I feel the CR-V EX-L to be a higher value in many respects, while providing nearly the same level of luxury and features. I could bemoan the loss of the 300hp V-8 and 0-60 times of 6.0 seconds, but it's not a big deal. The i-VTEC 's 161 lb-ft peak torque figure may not seem exceptional, but my driving impression is that the torque curve is wide and that the transmission is well mated to the engine, such that it feels adequate for nearly all driving situations and doesn't require lots of revving to get the car out of its own way.

We got our 2009 black/black EX-L with navigation and AWD for $26,100 before taxes with %1.9 financing for 3 years; it was a dealer promotion sent through an email. The salesman said it was under the dealer's invoice. After a $300 charge to tow the exact trim my wife wanted from another dealer in NY, DMV stuff, and CT taxes it was $28,000 out the door.

FormerlyFromTexas' ,
Add up all the accessories. They are not cheap. And the labor plus the additional delivery. $$$$
I would forget the extended warranty. The CR-V should be much more reliable than your Beemer and the prepaid insurance that is an extended warranty is unnecessary IMO. As long as all maintenance is performed, especially the rear diff fluid, you will all set IMO. Put the $1200 in a money market at ING. If you want to make sure it will be available should you ever need it? The no cost Honda 3yr/36 month bumper to bumper and 5yr/60 month powertrain warranty is sufficient. How many keep a vehicle over 5 years?
What I am trying to say is 26.1k-ish quickly becomes near 27.1k-ish when you add any dealer fees. So when writing down the price OTD it seems it would be best for comparison not to include the tax but include everything else. Taxes vary a lot so lets leave them out of the equation. Often it is not clear as what is considered OTD as perceptions vary.
The problem with FormerlyFromTexas' deal was the time factor. The dealer had him over a barrel for him to do any better. If there is only so much time left before you lose your flight, anyone in the same predicament would say it is close enough and sign. Remember too that the supply of 4WD was not good and price is all about supply and demand.
To make more profit from the internet savvy buyer the dealers add a 'title and documentation fee' that can range anywhere from rarely under $200 to way over $500 at some dealers. Plus other 'non negotiable' fees are sometimes added. BUNK! Everything is negotiable! My fee was $237 for Doc, Title & Temp Plates (i think) but I had them deduct it from my target price of $20900 for an ordered ’08 CR-V EX in April. That was at the time a fair compromise of a fair deal for me and leaving the dealer some profit. Fair is fair! That is how I came up with the figure. The fact that they did not want to go for the deal until I played the ‘this dealer will sell it for this amount’ card confirmed that it was about as low as it can reasonably go. So approximately $20,950 was the real OTD. No anything else added. We have no tax here in NH.
Often it is not clear as what is considered OTD as perceptions vary. Do you add the Tax? The extended warranty? The interior cloth treatment? I say everything but the taxes need to be added for the OTD. But then that it hard for comparison purposes if the options are added as well as there are too many possible combinations. The taxes are not included in OTD since they vary anywhere from 0% to whateveritis% at your location.
For OTD price any fees plus any and all additional charges need to be added to the Price + S/H to arrive at the OTD cost. Let’s leave out the taxes and financing cost. Let’s not include any options. But let’s include any stripes, cloth treatment, VIN etching, extended warranty, prepaid service such as oil changes plus any of the other bogus dealer high profit items.
IMO one who pays $25k plus $1200 for an extended warranty really pays $26.2k OTD. If one chooses to invest on the warranty since technically not necessary and it is a dealer high profit item, it needs to be included for comparison with those that choose not to buy or invest in it! It is part of the profit and in some cases without the warranty the price might not go as low when considered part of a package.
These price comparisons help but in reality they are not all that relevant. Prices can vary a lot for area to area due to supply and demand.
Any opinions on how I believe one should arrive at the OTD pricing?

An after Honda delivered mod? As far as I know there are only LX, EX, EX-L & EX-L w/Nav. Just those four models as delivered by the Honda car hauler .
Anything else has to be a dealer or by a non-Honda US factory modification with the name 'Alabaster Edition. It could be a Honda Regional Division I suppose that makes the mod.

Hi all. Newbie here. I've been shopping for a CR-V. I'm interested in an '09 EX-L 4WD with NAVI. One dealer quoted me $26,674, $26,174 if I finanaced with them. Here are prices they quoted me on the on the accessories I was interested in:
Tailgate Spoiler- $375
Cargo-Area Cover- $261
Trailer Hitch- $673
Cargo Tray- $123
Fog Lights- $508
Chrome Side Steps- $801
TOTAL (for accessories): ~ $2,740
That gets me to ~$29,414
Here in RI, we pay 7% sales tax, so add that and that gets me to ~$31,500. Seems to me the price of the base car is semi-OK, but it looks like they tuck it on wrt the accessories. What's a fair price to offer on the accessories? Any other fees they might try to tack on? Documentation fees in RI are capped at $220 as I understand. Any and all advice welcomed, thanks!

Sounds like the base price is competitive but they are making up for it on the accessories. I would keep shopping. You can cut those accessories at least in half if you buy on-line and install them yourself. You will get to know your vehicle better too. I think you could get the base down a bit as well.
With the economy the way it is I am almost tempted to go in to our local Honda dealer and see how soft they are now. Last summer I couldn't get them to lower the price at all so I bought used and did pretty good.
Remember you are the customer. They need you more than you need them. Make'em an offer. Haggle'em down. It helps us all in the end, too. I heard there is a lot of vehicles on the west coast shipyards just sitting there because sales are so bad.
I bought off of craigslist. They dealers in Spokane were high. The dealers in Seattle were better on prices.

A fair price for added options/accessories might be the dealer cost for the part plus time to install at an installer rate. Not at the certified mechanics/tech rate they seem to charge. I do not think installers get paid as well as certified techs but I could be wrong.
The problem is that the Honda cost or invoice for accessories is not published that I know off. A multiplier of .60 to .75 depending on what it is might be a good guide of thumb. The true cost is possibly 1/2 but you need to leave then a slight profit. After all they are in business to make a profit. Take all the profit away and so goes the dealer. Out of business.
In every other manufacturer the options are priced for the differential in price. With minimal or no labor added. And the dealer invoice for the option is published at Edmond's.com and other sites.
For instance I have read the fog light can be installed in an hour to 1.5 hour by those that do them often. And by those who have done them on this forum if they had to do it over again. The online price averages at $200-240 I think. Bernardiparts.com lists the fog light P/N (http://www.bernardiparts.com/Honda-Fog-Lights-CR-V__08V31-SWA-100.aspx)08V31-SWA-100 (http://www.bernardiparts.com/Honda-Fog-Lights-CR-V__08V31-SWA-100.aspx)@ $325 MSRP and sells for $237.51. So if you allow 1.5 hours at a $50/hr rate you are at $308 instead of the asking price off $508. Since the dealer needs to sell the CR-V, you are at a bargaining advantage. I just do not see the $200 premium for the foglights they are asking in this economy. That is the estimated $308 dealer installed cost versus $508 asking price.
Do the same for each accessory and come up with a more reasonable figure. A good approximation is 60-80% of the asking price. They definitely do seem inflated that is for sure. Unfortunately all those that are challenged doing that type of work are at the mercy of the dealer.
It sucks! You can just walk away but you will be missing one well designed and built SUV. It is backed by in most cases a generous warranty even beyond the 3/36 bumper to bumper with the good will compensation policy Honda often applies on certain problems. Other manufacturers warranty for a longer period but then they have a worse repair record. I do not know about you but I opt for the more reliable vehicle with the shorter warranty as odds are you will not need it. The CR-V frequency of repair record in consumer reports is impressive. I believe only the RAV4 is close. All others do much worse. In any event the CR-V drivetrain has a 5/60 warranty. Certain emission related components go out beyond that period.
FYI: The official Honda installation instruction is available on line at Bernardiparts.com as well as on other sites.
Choose wisely!

Is $18800 + Tax and Freight a good price for a CRV 09 LX?
2wd? Other wise you better wear a sky cap or mask!
That sound like $2445 under MSRP for the 2WD.
Invoice is $20.448 and Edmund's TMV is $20,211
So yeaaah! $18,800 sound like $1,648 under invoice!
Some thing does not sound right. Maybe for an '08 demo with miles on it. How many miles on it?
Is it a demo? Or is the dealer going out of business?
I doubt it can stay in business that way. The incentives are not normally that high.
Any other options, warranty or prepaid service included part of the deal at additional cost where they can recoup some profit?
What about the processing and documentation fees etc. Are they making a lot on those.
http://www.edmunds.com/new/2009/honda/crv/101077136/optionsresults.html?action=2
The economy as it is and with additional dealer incentives the TMV might be slightly high but not by $1411! Something does not sound right.

Hi All,
New member here! Recently started my search for a CR-V for my wife.
Contacted a few dealers and this is the best quote I am getting for an 09 EX AWD:
$21984 + Tax (5% in MA) + New Registration ($86) + documentation fee (~$300).
Just wanted to throw it out there and see what you guys think.
Also what's up with this documentation fee? The dealer said that's something across the board I HAVE to pay.
Thanks.

Hi Everyone,
I just signed up. I am planning to purchase a used 08 CRV EX in the next week. The vehicle has 5,000 miles on it and has a sunroof and the extended 8/100,000 warranty, I think he said. Everything else is the standard EX options. The price is $18500. I have been trying to do some research and I think that is an excellent deal. He says the car was purchased in Sept for $28,000 and he is moving out of the country and needs to sell it in the next 2 weeks.
I would be interested in hearing your opinion on the price. He says the warranty is transferrable. I am new to the Honda family as I have stayed American made for the last 15 years.

It sounds like a smoking good deal.
Be sure it has a clean title. Be sure it has not been wrecked and repaired. Also find out if it is 2WD or AWD. The all wheel drive model is worth more to you and makes the deal sweeter. Is it the right color and what you want? Can you afford it? If yes, then go for it. Our economy could use the boost.
The warranty should be transferrable and if you want to find out more about the vehicle you can get the VIN# and contact honda about what factory service work has been performed on it.
How good of deal is it? If your in the market, you should check it out fully and make the deal.
Read all you can on this forum and it will help you get to know your vehicle.

i think it's a perfect deal for you, but to be sure that it is, ask him to check the car first so that mechanic could tell you that everything is ok and nothing gonna be brake the next day... couse you know maybe he was in some serious crash and something is wrong so that's why he want o sell it as soon as possible, couse noone buys a car a few months before leaving the country )) or maybe he's a terrorist? kiddin :D

The documentation fee = MORE PROFIT!
All dealers do it. It is ‘non negotiable’ and varies from just under $200 to I have been informed by a dealer as high as $500 (or more I am sure). Whatever the market will bare. It is supposed to cover copies, paperwork, any legwork and possibly even to cover commission for the sales staff. Any miscellaneous cost are rolled in.
Some say most of this cost is built into the selling price. CODB. Cost Of Doing Business. It probably is at MSRP.
One way to get around it if lets say you agree on $20k as the selling price. The dealer wants $20.3k with the ‘fee’. Insist on $20k, “dealer yxyz sells for it that” (if they do). Or “that is what I want to pay”…”that is Edmund's FMV”… whatever. If the salesman sees losing the sale he will just fix the deal to the new price at $19.7k + 300 = $20k OTD + registration + tax. End of story, NO MORE FEES!
Presto the documentation fee goes away.
I have done that more than once. It usually involves getting an OK from the manager as the dealer profit starts getting slim. If they cannot make at least a certain amount on the average they cannot stay in business. I think that figure has to be greater than $600. $1000 is more comfortable but they like to get $1500+” all incentives included. I vaguely remember reading those numbers from somewhere but the number might be dated. If they sell 60 cars/month, 60 x 1.5k is only $90k. That has to pay for all salaries and rent + all the overhead yet have a profit left over. That is the bottom line. It is not charity work.
I like a bargain as well as the next guy but it has to be reasonable.

I've been working with a dealership in SE Michigan for a MY 2009 CR-V EX AWD.
Does anyone know how low the APR can get from Honda Financial for 60 month term? Local banks are advertising around 5% if applicants qualify. I think 2.9 or 3.9% would be reasonable from Honda for 60 months.
What is everyone else finding?
BTW, price less options, fees, taxes, etc. is $23,000. This seems fair considering Edmunds.com reports invoice at $22,477 with dealer cash figured in. Despite the rough economy, the CR-V seems to still be in high demand.

Hey All. Went to my local Honda dealership and pulled the trigger on a new CRV. It's a 2009 EX-L with NAVI, Black on black. I got the following options:
-Rear Deck Spoiler
-Foglights
-Auto Day/Night Mirror
$30,400 out-the-door, including tax and doc fee.
My missus will be very happy. She was initially interested in the Accord, but after driving both vehicles, she preferred the CRV. Why? Primarily because she has a very handy place to put her purse--under the gearshift in front of the center console. She also likes being up higher, with very good visibility, and also likes the tight turning radius. I'm happy because it will do almost everything my Ford Explorer does, with better gas milage to boot. Looking forward to taking delivery this week! Will post a pic when I get it.

RIJim,
The space for the pocketbook is even more practical on the XL with the folding down center console. With that arrangement they can hide their pocket book under the center console. Even big ones.
At first I thought a folding center console was a stupid design but Honda might be on to something with this pocketbook space.
As with 99% of the rest of us without any major problems you will love it. My '08 Ohio CR-V has been one of the better vehicles I have ever bought being practically defect free. Only in some areas you do not normally see do I think the paint coverage could have been better. Specially the Clear coat. Mechanically or functionally absolutely no issues at all. Very well thought out no matter what gripes others have. You just cannot please everyone.
If you are in the minority with issues, hopefully you picked a dealer with a competent service department. :)

It seemed that even with pre-approval, American Honda Finance aren't offering good APR deals on new CRV's - between co-worker and us, we brought new 08 CRV-EX AWD and 09 EX-L/Nav. AWD and the best AHFC could do was 5.9% and 6.75%, both on 60 months term.
Since the 08 with 15 miles was one of the last 2 remaining in the lot ("born" in Japan last Sept.) - managed to get it for $23,000 even, destination charge & all dealer add-on/license/registration/inspection/prep/advertising/etc. included, excluding NYC sales tax and $895 for Lo-Jack 1. Got a "fair" credit of $7,250 for trade-in, reducing the sales tax bite by about $607 plus a cash down, so we're good with it.
On the other hand, we ended up with a 2nd. Honda dealer further away as the 1st. one that sold us the 08 won't come down - and the 2nd. dealer sold it for $28,600 including destination & all charges + sales tax (no trade-in credit).

Ok, an update to my first post #228. I am planning to pick up my 08 CR-V EX AWD on Thursday. I am driving from MD to the Philly area to buy a car that I have only seen via a picture. lol. The owner is in India now but I have been doing my due deligence making sure everything is kosher, It is kind of a crazy story but I am getting the car for $18250 (I am assuming this is a great price?) with a 8yr/100,000 warranty that I have to pay $150 to transfer, from what I was told. The car only has 5200 miles and according to the owner, has never been in an accident or even a scratch on it. He purchased the car in Sept.08 but had to leave for India unexpectedly for personal/family reasons.
I secured a loan for $19800 at 5.25% (could have saved .50% if I had direct deposit) from my credit union. Car plus tags and tax. I was able to get that % because my cu said it was at the 80% loan value of KBB. Otherwise it would have been around 6%.
Once I get to Philly, I will check out the car, kick the tires, make sure no damage and if all looks good, I will drop off in the mail the certified bank check to Honda Finance for the remaining pay off. I will drive home the car and await for the title to be sent to me. I will then fedex the title and bill of sale to him to sign and notarize and fed ex back to me.
So I hope all goes well. My friends are skeptical but the guy has been upfront and honest every step of the way thus far. If there is anything you may suggest that I may be overlooking, let me know.
I will post a pic once I have the car in my hands.
The car is for my wife. We haven't purchased a Honda for about 18 years and have stayed American made. I am just tired of the terrible resale and since my wife drives her cars for at least 10 years, I figured we may as well get a reliable vehicle. I am looking forward to owning a Honda again.

In NH you cannot get a temp plate without a signed bill of sale.
Who is insuring the car while it is driven?
On newer vehicles it is owned by the party that has the title. I'm not sure that signing over the registration or a bill of sale is sufficient to permanently register it! That means that sending the title to this person is extremely risky. He could just claim that you owed him money and paid off the loan. Without him selling it. That the paperwork was not signed by him and you made it up...
Honda may not want to send you the title. I don't think? They will send it to the owner of record which is not you until the title is signed! A Catch-22!
You could end up with the keys to a car you cannot register. If he even trust you to payoff the loan before he gives you the keys. He could report it stolen too!
It sounds like a possible nightmare. You better make sure the process has no gotyas. I would consult a lawyer, Honda Financing and the MVD or DVM if I were you. India is pretty far away and laws that apply in one country may not apply in the other.
That is all I can think off. I hope you know know what you are doing. I know I would not sleep until I had the signed title in my hands.
Good luck!

I feel you are getting what I call a "smoking good deal". I would really be cautious about this. If you pull it off you will have made a good deal. If not you are almost certainly out of luck. It almost sounds like a scam to me. Here is a little advise though. I was going to buy a private party "06" CRV that had money owed on it still. I was to pay Honda Finance off. Honda would mail me the title but it would have been in the other party's name. I would have the vehicle but would have to have the previous owner sign off the title. I was very concerned that they may not sign it at this point. They lived in Spokane and I could drive there and personally have them sign it. I ended up chickening out and actually found a better deal for me on an "07".
My advise to you is to be sure to call Honda and find out the balance remaining. They will tell you if you have the loan account number. This is the only way you will know to the penney how much is remaining. He may be bluffing you into paying off his loan. He may still owe a lot more or may be late on his payments. Also consider not sending the title to him. He could just give you a "Power of Attorney" type statement and you could just sign it for him. Or just sign the title. Motor vehicle won't check the signature. They are just looking to see if it is signed. Be sure HE gives YOU the bill of sale. Not you mailing it to him for him to sign.
Good luck with this and let us know

Then I guess I did allright. The dealer threw in a free 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty and also free tires for the first two times (8 tires) as long as I get the CRV serviced there. Every 6th oil change is free too. 21,759 total with no tax or other fees and a full tank to go!
I could be wrong but that sounds like an AutoFair or Grappone package deal. One of the two offered me a similar package.
The Powertrain warranty comes for free with all new CR-Vs but for only 5yr/60k miles. In addition to the 3/36 bumper to bumper is all you get during the overwhelming list of details to be considered while purchasing. So basically you got an extra 40k miles. That is it. As well as the tank of gas. I’m almost certain that is a Honda policy as part of the mandated items in the pre-delivery check list. It is fairly standard in the industry. And the first oil change. I could get it done for free if I did not want to switch to synthetic and DIY. I like to check it out for leaks etc myself.
Hap, :) unless your details are not correct I hate to burst your bubble but you basically just paid for the tires up front. :(
My '08 XL AWD was $20,950 out the door with the temp plates, documentation fees and NH state inspection all included. No other fees. No being tied down to having serviced at that dealer. No other nonsense warranties (IMO) some love them butt I personally do not think buy you all that much on one of the most reliable cars in the industry. With often Customer Goodwill extended warranty beyond the warranty period on problems grossly Hondas fault all for free or with partial coverage. Every case is different. If the driver is negligent, no coverage.
AutoFair or Grappone tried to HARD sell me the same deal instead of dropping their price to match Peter's or Atamian. Both of them came in within a few dollars of each other in April of '08. I ordered my choice of colors and took delivery on July 1st, 2008. I wanted a fresh off the truck LX AWD. It had under 10 miles on it after the pre delivery inspection.
Just enjoy the V. It is not a bad deal. Due to the economy but you could have probably done slightly better with the huge back log of vehicle sitting at the regional distribution center and factory parking lots for most manufacturers. Without being tied down to service at that dealer unless you were going to go there anyway for service. The problem is that if you miss one of their expensive service packages, they do not have to honor the extra 40k miles they gave you. It is a game they play. Statistically they know most drivers will miss one or more scheduled services somewhere along the line! Thus getting out of the warranty obligation.
A word to the wise; read the service schedule in the manual as there are a lot of reports of dealers exceeding the frequency and amount of maintenance that Honda USA recommends in the owners manual. As long as you meet that, no extra services need to be done EVEN IF THE DEALER SAYS IT MUST BE DONE! I am not familiar with how your dealer does things. If they give you a hard sell ask them to show you where in the manual it requires that service be done.
As far as the replacement tires go I personally like to go with Costco due to their generous warranty, qualified techs, free rotation and flat repairs for the 6 year life of the tires. And they are very close to my house. Tires do get cuts etc so in this case the warranty is a good thing.
I hope you like it as much as I and the wife does. I suggest you read up un the VSA, TPMS and rear diff on this forum. It might save you some frustation. Other than that the V is intuitive and straight forward. The Quick Check manual has most of the details in it you will need. My wife loves it for looking up !

Signing a legal document is not a good idea. If it is not a scam and is not contested it might go unnoticed only if they do not ask for the guys license or compare signatures!
If it is a scam and it is contested you could be screwed and not him for fraud or falsifying ...!
Making sure he was late on payments is a great idea.

carfax!!!!
Thanks for all your concerns guys. I did my due diligence as stated, car fax, he suppplied his acct. # for the payoff which I verified, I called Honda motors and gave them the vin to verify the AWD, owner, etc. So here is the story.
I had a friend of mine drive up with me this morning. We drove 3 hours to the Philly area and pulled up to his aunts home. I was little nervous but as we pulled up, there she was sitting in the driveway. I got excited and felt a sense of relief that I didn't waste 6 hours of driving. The car was a little messy on the inside but the outside appeared to be like new as he stated. I opened the hood, engine clean and like new (5200 miles), and drove the car around for a bit. Everything was great. He left all the paperwork in the car. He paid $28,223 EX AWD, Inc. Tax. Tags and that also included the Honda Care Extended Service Contract which he paid $1670 for. (Word for the Wise, if anyone buys a used car with the Extended Warranty, you have 15 days to transfer it over). I looked over the contract and it looks like it will only cost me $50 to transfer it over (1x to the new owner). He put a down payment on Sept in the amount of $10K and financed the other $18K for 3 yrs at 2.9%. So it looks like he spent $10K to own the car for 6 months. I picked it up for $18250 with the 8yr/100,000 warranty, minus the $50 for the transfer of the contract. The warranty is huge for me as my wife drives her cars for over 10 years. I don't anticipate using it but there is the peace of mind knowing I have it. His payoff to Honda finance was around $16K which I put in the mail after I drove off with the car. I left his Aunt the remaining balance to his name. On my way home, stopped by a nice car wash and spent $60 to do a thorough inside detail since the car is for my wife. The car looked brand new after the detail. There was one small ding near the front fender (probably from a car door) and a few scratches on the back bumber, but other than that, the car looked great.
My wife absolutely loves the car, was somewhat surprised everything worked out, at least to this point. I still will have to wait for the title to be sent to me from Honda Finance (He called and asked them to send it to me) which I will then send to India for him to sign. He was willing to send power of attorney for his relative or me to sign. He has been up front in everything (constant emails) and it will be easier for me just to fed ex to him and fedex back to me the signed title and bill of sale so I can register the car here in MD. Could he still scam me? Well, I guess he could not sign the title but I just don't think that will be the case. Maybe I am too trusting in people?
I didn't want to post that I actually never even test drove the CRV, nor my wife. We were not looking to buy a CRV until the summer or next year but this deal came up quickly and I felt I had to jump on it and thus we never got a chance to test drive the car. My wife had her mind set that she wanted a CRV (she liked the looks and had owned a Honda in the past). Well, the CRV didn't dissappoint her, she loves the car and loves how it rides and loves the fact that we saved a lot of money on basically a new car.
I forgot to take a picture but I will tomorrow and post it. My wife wants to drive it to work so I will have to wait until she gets back home.

That sounds good so far. I wish you the best of luck. You did a great amount of up front work but it is paying off in the form of a "smoking good deal".
I forgot to also advise you to also check the VIN # against the paperwork. You should verify that if you haven't already. It sounds like you pulled it off.
I suppose there still is a possiblity of something going wrong with the Honda Financing but as long as your payment gets there before the next monthly payment is due you should be okay.
Please post the pictures when you get time. I have to say "congratulations". You should win an award for the "best deal on CRV" of the year.

Thanks, checking the vin was the first thing I did. The balance is due on the 28th. I was in Philly and could have just dropped off the check since Honda Finance address was in Philly. I wanted to get back home so it went in the mail in MD. I would think it would make it there in time though. I guess the worst case senario, I would have to pay a few bucks for the xtra day. That would stink since it would delay the titleing process.

All Indians I know off are respectable types. But there is always the rotten apple in every barrel. Sounds like you will have a nice car for less than new.
You never answered my question; under whom is the insurance at the moment. Since it is not signed over yet, it should be the Indian guy. I cannot believe he will let you drive it under his coverage? Should he even have it.
The minute the title is signed technically the insurance has to be under your name.
I believe that is how it works. Should you have the misfortune to have an accident, you could be screwed without coverage or if it is not legally covered. As in if you insure his car. You could lose your house if you have one!
Good luck!

Rg- He actually sent me an email prior to me picking up the car and told me that I needed to have the car insured as his insurance would not cover it. I contacted my insurance agent and put the car under my policy yesterday. I didn't think I could get insurance initially but my agent said as long as I am taking possesion of the car, it can be insured. So I am good there; however, I still have his tags that I am using. I plan on sending them back to Penn DMV once I get the title signed over to me and I can register the car here in MD.
I have other cars so I don't plan to use the car everyday until I get my own tags. I would hate to get a speed camera ticket and have the ticket issued to him, lol.

I generally do not read this thread for lack of interest, but iluvthisgame, I have to admit you have a fascinating story here, and a hell of lot more courage than I have. Alarm bells that I can't even identify are going off in my head, and yet you may just pull this off! I hope you do, but, good God, what a scary deal! Send the title off to India??????? This whole thing reeks of scam! Yet....
On the whole I would advise people not to get involved in deals like this. If you must, I think I would enlist the aid of a agent or law firm to ensure that it is not a scam.
OK, I have to stop typing now the alarm bells are deafening. I have to get a drink, oh yeah, I am not allowed to drink.
Welcome to the club, and good luck with your deal, and your V!

Thanks- I know how you must feel as well as other people on this forum that I must be out of my mind doing this deal. Trust me, my colleagues and wife thought/think the same thing. In about 2 weeks, I should have this deal completed (waiting for title from Penn MVA) and then I can relax.
I would not recommend anyone doing this type of deal, lol. Of all people, I should not have done this deal. 19 years ago I took a $20K loss on a 1990 Eagle Talon AWD. I actually won a judgement agst the company but it was a 6 year headache that affected my credit. It was one of those, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is" story.
I am an impulsive person and once I make up my mind on something, I usually get it done or purchase it. I saw this great deal, felt comfortable talking to the guy via the phone, everything checked out as he stated, and I tried to make sure all my t's were crossed and i" were dotted. I know this is a big risk, and still is, but I feel confident that in 2 weeks that I will be driving this car with my own tags on it. I will keep everyone posted.
