Hi,
I wonder why CR-V 2007 does not coming with roof rack, like almost all other SUVs. Is there any reason?

Cheers,

A roof rack is available as a dealer installed option. Why it is not standard equipment on some trim lines, I have no idea. But for those of us who don't want the rack, it is a good thing.

i agree... i'm glad that it didn't come standard because i like my V without a roof rack.. but sorry that the ones that do like it have to get it as an option, but at least it is offered.

The new CRV's are more car /suv crossover due to greater demand for a less truck-like vehicle. The old 2006 and prior were a little like a Land Rover and less like a car. The roof rack is not efficent for mileage and hard to use. The big thing now, even on trucks, is the use of rear hitch mounted storage racks. Some come with wheels and detach so you can fill it up inside and wheel it out to reciever where it hooks up. Some have additional brake lights that hook to the trailer plug in. CRV's require a Class I Hitch that can only handle 1500LBS towing weight. Since the storage units are made for all size Hitches the CRV Class I Hitches have a maximum tongue wieght of 200LBS. The average large suite case weighs 50LBS. So get the lightest hitch mounted system and then don't add more than three large suite cases. These hitch mounted storage units are either open or closed (with hard shelled covers)and some swing away to allow for access to doors or hatch to open. Some have tailgating set ups with a portion for ice and a drain for water on bottom. Some people bring cooking units, meat to cook, salids and drinks in the storage units. The mileage is not reduced by the friction caused by roof mounted systems and the accesibility is much easier. The other great thing is for Airport drop offs it's a piece of cake. If you have a front tow frame it is possible to use a storage unit by modifing the hitch style from a one center attachment to a two pronged attachment like the tow bars. This setup may cause engine heat-up if it blocks the air intake so use only the open storage frames and leave room in the center for air to enter engine area. See Tow World,Hitch World and Camping World.:p

The 2007 and newer have a 12% better air friction factor than the 2006. One reason is the roof design without any racks or surfaces to restrict air flow. It probably gave the MPG a few tenths help.

It is about cost. Compare the North American V with the European V, cost and features. North America gets the inexpensive and low content V and Europe gets a high end, high cost V.

If Honda starts putting all the goodies on the V that all our North American members gush about, I will be driving something else. I don't have $36 to $48K to dump in a car for luxury features. If people want that sort of thing, buy a Acura. Why do we keep wishing for an extremely expensive V?

Yeah it is something you can get from a dealer or on EBay I am getting the roof rails for my 04 but I can’t find a good price they are around 160 bucks  . I do like the look with a roof rack but it isn't aerodynamically good I am going to get the roof rails for my ski rack but once the snowboard season is over I will take off the rack it’s like having two spoilers on the roof of the car. In my dad’s car which has a permanent ski rack set up the roof pops down a bit at 80 mph no damage just a startling noise but it’s that much wind turbulence.

I don't think it is even about the cost. I just bought the Executive version of the 08 CRV here in the Netherlands, which is the top model you can get, and that didn't come with the roof rack. I had to purchase it separately as an option.

That said, I had looked at the new BMW X5 which came out for me at over €100,000, and even for that price, the roof racks had to be specified as an option.

I figure that the SUV manufacturers think that most buyers don't want a roof rack which is why most brands (at least in Europe) have stopped delivering roof racks as standard, for example on the XC90 sport, RAV4 Cross-style, Freelander 2 and so on.

Hi,

We did purchase the roof rack as an option for our 2007 EX purchased in august 2007. we like the looks and utility of a roof rack but have noted a resonance at 50-51 mph.

Has any one else experienced this and if so, was there any way to correct it?

Thanks,
Bob

That's why I'm on the fence as far as getting one for my '07 EX-L. A few years back, I had a '98 CR-V LX that I had bought for my wife. She wanted a rack, so I purchased one and installed it myself. There was a significant resonance sound from the rack's crossbars while traveling at highway speeds.

This time, however, we own the EX-L model with moonroof. So, I'm debating on installing the rack--and also installing a moonroof visor. I'm thinking the visor might provide some air lift to stop (or help diminish) the crossbar resonance at highway speeds.

Any thoughts from others with the roof rack?

One thing to keep in mind with the honda rack is that it can be removed in about 15 minutes with basic hand tools if you only need it for occasional usage. I normally take the cross bars on my Element off in winter to make it easier to clean the snow off the roof. I only have mine for looks anyways.

As for wind noise and effects on fuel mileage i haven't noticed any personally.

I think the Honda roof rack is excellent.

Using a cordless drill and a T40 Torx bit, I have removal and installation down to 2 minutes each.
