View Full Version : Price Advice, 2008 EX-L

I currently own a 2007 AWD Element & will soon be buying a 2008 CR-V, EX-L AWD.
Prior to buying my Element, I found extensive purchasing advice on the Element Owners Club (EOC) website & felt I got a very good deal when I bought it one year ago.
I know 2008 CR-Vs are in high demand, but I still want to name my terms in exactly what I want to pay & then use the FAX BLAST method I learned on the EOC website. The key to this method is coming up with the lowest price that I'm happy with; and also one, that at least a small percentage of the dealers I "FAX BLAST" can also live with and agree to.
Here is exactly what I am looking to buy:
2008, Honda CR-V AWD EX-L (Navi), Green Tea Metallic
I would greatly appreciate your help in sharing your buying experience & the prices you've paid. Ideally, I'd like to come up with an "Out the Door" (OTD) price; however, I know that Tax & License vary by what state you live in (I live in CA).
Thanks for your help!

Well, there is probably a built up demand for 2008 Navi EX-Ls since there was a short gap between the 07s and 08s due to the feature changes (power seat, dual zone climate). It puts you in a harder bargaining position. Good luck.

Don't expect strangers, that's what people on a forum are, to get you the best price. It's all up to you.

Yes, I know it's all up to me Greenzter, which is why I'm using every research tool at my disposal to work my best deal.
I'm not a newbie at this and as I indicated in my original post regarding my Element purchase, the Element Owner's Club (EOC) was a very valuable resource for information on what other buyers & shoppers had experienced.
Part of the power of a good forum is to share & learn from other members experiences and that is simply what I'm trying to do as part of being fully prepared.
With that said......I hope other members & potential buyers in this forum will still share their purchasing experiences on an OTD price for a 2008 CR-V, AWD, EX-L, Navi.
Thanks:)

That would only be of real value from others in your area and/or state.
There have been many posts about price.

Good point, Miko!
I guess it would be more realistic to simply ask for feedback on price paid + destination.
I could then factor in tax, lic, etc. specific to CA in order to come up with what I'm willing to pay for OTD.
Thanks for the feedback.

but in your defense, i think it's helpful to still know what people pay for their cars, it kinda gives you a jumping off point of knowing what others are getting their v's for, regardless where everyone is located..... So hopefully people will give u their help! good luck with your purchase!

You could do that, Clavey. What others have paid in relationship to MSRP. But unless it's in your area, I'm not sure it would help you with your dealer.
There have been many posts about price paid for 07's.

Ordinarily, I would put a fair amount of stock on what people have paid for 2007's; however, the 2008 EX-L AWD Navi is a bit more different due to the power front seat & the Navi system; so based upon that, I feel I might be comparing apples & oranges.
I know the 2008 Navi's have not been out long, so if I'm unable to get any feedback, I will provide my price info on this forum after I end up buying one.
I will continue to check back on this forum & will also be checking out some other pricing resources as well, before I take the plunge.
Thanks!

This is a very true statement...It's amazing that with the addition of the 6 way power drivers seat and dual climate control it makes the EX-L and EX-L Navi models an even "hotter" selling CR-V model.
I got quotes from three WA state dealers...
Only one of three dealers had a 2008 EX-L on the lot, black on black. None of the three dealers here in WA had any EX-L w/Navi. Two of the three dealers quoted me $250.00 off the $27,335 MSRP(includes $635.00 destination charge) on the EX-L, this was right in line with the Edmunds.com "What Others Are Paying In Your Area" category.
The other dealer was willing to do the "COSTCO" auto program deal, which for the 2008 CR-V AWD EX-L is $1,200.00 over invoice. Invoice on the 2008 CR-V AWD EX-L is $25,456.00(includes $635.00 destination charge) + $1,200.00 = $26,656.00(does not include tax/registration fees). So I'm thinking the MSRP is at $27,335.00 and this dealer with the COSTCO deal is saving me $700.00 off MSRP, not too bad.
This particular dealer has several EX-L AWD en route with legitimate build dates including VIN #'s. I'm feeling that the majority, not all, dealers across the U.S. will be getting MSRP or close to it until the buying frenzy cools off a little bit on the 2008 EX-L models.
I shopped the market as well on the 2008 EX-L AWD w/Navi, the best deal I could make was again $250.00 off MSRP, which is $29,035.00(includes $635 destination charge). The dealers I went to were not willing to move much off MSRP on the EX-L AWD w/Navi. I know that invoice on the EX-L AWD w/Navi is $27,033.00(includes $635.00 destination charge), if you could make a deal at $28,500.00 at this early stage of the buying game, I'd say that you're doing pretty good with that. Remember, we have competition too...the other consumer willing to pay "FULL PRICE".
This will be my third CR-V...for the $$$$, and the incredible re-sale, it is hands down the best buy for the money compared to the other SUV's in its class. Looking forward to those heated seats/mirrors and the XM too!!
Good Luck...

I'm taking the plunge today & will be driving to my dealer to buy my 2008 CR-V, AWD, EX-L, NAVI.
My price is $28,105.16 + TTL.
Not great, but not bad either. Bottom line is that it's for my wife & she has fallen in love with it. I've shopped around quite a bit & feel this is the best I can do at this time. I still feel I could have done better if I was willing to wait for a few months until demand for the NAVI has cooled off.
In either case, I'm still satisfied with my price & look forward to being a two-Honda household (2007 Element & 2008 CR-V)

Full MSRP is not a bad deal at this early stage of negotiating price on the early 2008's...The buying frenzy on the EX-L may not cool off until late in the model year, who knows.
My goal is to make up what I feel I lost when I purchased when I end up re-selling the CR-V...I've had my 2003 CR-V since new, almost 5 years now, I paid $21,250.00 for it back then. It has 59K miles on it and has a trade-in value of $14K and a clean NADA if I sell it myself at $15,250.00. I had a 60 month loan and put no money down, even if I trade it in I'm money ahead...Not bad for a five year old car that we drove and enjoyed, not the first time this has happened to me in years of Honda ownership!

BTW they told me they only had one coming in on order. Also the pricing above included the options if that wasn't clear. ;)
The sales man was John Mann. If you do decide to talk with him please let me know, I'll give you my name and he'll give me a referral bonus. :) That way we both can benefit!
Or anyone that get's a deal from John for that matter! :)

Just put deposit down on 2008 CRV EX-L 2WD (no Navi) in Atlanta, GA and have a VIN number - should be here in 2 weeks - Glacier Blue w Grey interior. There are no EX-Ls on the lots (can find a few EX's and a Navi) and people are preordering in this area. My wife totaled her 98 Accord so I needed to get her a new car since waiting is not really a good option. I shoped around via internet pricing / phone (haven't been to the dealership yet) and negotiated the following:
Price $24,458
Dest Fee $635
Pric Incl Dest Fee $25,093
Doc Fee $487
Subtotal $25,580
Tax 7.00% $1,791
Subtotal Inc Tax $27,371
Title Fee $21
Total $27,392
So, in summary, i got it for $1,042 less than MSRP ($25,500), $749 above Invoice ($23,709) and $913 less than TMV / Total Market Value ($25,371) which is what Edmunds states the average selling price is. Now, you can decide if i did well - I think so :) .
They told me they were selling for $1,000 above MSRP but I pushed hard and used actual quotes from other internet sales managers. They all wanted me to come in and show them the quote - as well as the models they supposedly had on the lot (which after further investigation was BS). But, if you get a few good quotes you can use those to negotiate - and, by phone.
Hope this helps - look forward to hearing what others are paying and strategies for best price. Once I actually receive the car I'll follow-up.

One of the problems with asking someone to fess up to what they paid is that half the forum will jump on the poor SOB and tell them what a lousy deal he got. Nothing makes a person feel better about themselves than to have 50 people on the forum tell the world what a simple minded sap he is for paying so much.
If it makes you feel any better I am sure you will do better than me. My tactic is to get completely PO'd out of my mind and storm out of the dealer and never return. Ha Ha I showed them!!!! After you do that enough, you find that you still don't have a car and you have a long drive to a find yet another dealer. Its a shame that the Irish have to buy cars, we are so bad at it. Good luck with your purchase, and if you see some deals that are too good to be true, that is probably because they ain't true.

Good for you, Black Pearl.
After I've bought, I never tell how much I paid. Because everybody will say you paid too much. And you know something else, the ones who brag about the great deal they got, and how they stuck it to the dealer, are usually stretching the truth.
Fact is that dealers always win. They're not in business to give cars away.

Especially when they are selling something that moves as well as CR-V's. It is definitely an assymetrical battle. The dealers sell cars everyday. I buy one once a decade. They know hell of a lot more about PO'd Irishmen, than I know about them. It is a process that I thoroughly dislike.

I think everyone wants to pay a reasonable price for the car. I am sure everyone wants to see the dealer stay in business to provide service and maintenance for the vehicles we purchase. They are obviously not running a charity but a viable business that hires people and drive the economic engine. At the same time, the buyers are trying to get the best price possible. But somewhere in the middle, two must meet. I think the trick is to be able to walk away with a vehicle where both the buyers and sellers are pleased that deal has been reached. In perfect world, this would happen but for now, the game continues to take place everyday at every dealership.
I've come to realize that even if I pay a few hundred dollars more, I want to be fair to the sales person and the dealership as they provide needed service. Because of different dealerships at different times feel the pressure to sell, some may buy at lower price than the others. But in the end, if you are satisfied with your purchase, and enjoy the vehicle, it isn't so bad, I don't think.
I don't think any dealership will go out of business because of biding. They will either agree to your price or not. I want the best price I can get. I know once I leave the dealership I'll never be going back. They will promise the world but honor nothing they say. ...Buy your vehicle and run!!!

2008 EX 24,275 out the door in Ohio. I didn't buy just based on price. The CR-V is moving so well that they don't want to deal much and I got it very close to TMV based on Edmunds. Of the five or so really good dealers in our area, I picked Roush because of reputation for customer satisfaction, state of the art service centers (four of them and located close by), no BS sales style and helpful and friendly staff, their 'hondafidence' program that adds on 7 year 100,000 miles coverage, years in business (started with Honda back in the early 60's), road side assistance. Yes there where better deals but the price is only one part of the whole equation.
There was the little things during the experience that made them stand out. I asked for all the details on the figures and they gave them. All questions and information was given as requested. Some others either didn't answer the questions as asked or did not provide all the information requested. I asked for a specific model, color and options and they delivered it... when I wanted it. They took the time to show me the dealer, body and detail shop, parts area, service area and introduced me to the service manager (who by the way says to follow the maintenence minder instead of trying to get me in more often IE every x number of miles). I forgot my insurance information but no problem, the looked up my agent and called and even gave my agent all the info he needed so I did not need to take care of that. Heck, the co-worker that dropped me off went back to the parts department to pick up a Honda t-shirt. They could not find the size, color and style that he wanted but they did not give up looking for it until they did. Parts managers generally will not spend half an hour + looking for a $12 t-shirt for some one they don't even know. If they bend over backwards that hard for a t-shirt, it makes one wonder what they will do for more important issues.

Hey everyone,
I'm brand new here because, well, I'm thinking about a CR-V! I really like the new body style and the brand, and I'm a little cramped in my current car...plus, a Miata isn't good in inclement weather. *)
So, I'm looking at a 2WD EX-L w/navi. I'd rather get the 2WD instead of the 4WD, not because of the lower cost but because I want the 2WD. The dealers I spoke to today found that hard to believe. *)
It looks like $25,285 is the invoice price for this car. In the Seattle area, what's a reasonable price to ask from the dealer during negotiation? The quote I had today from one dealer was about $2K above the invoice price...seems a little high. Also, as a Costco member, is it worth going through their buying program? What sort of discount do they offer in this part of the country?
Thanks for your help!

Hi, new to this forum.
Looks like I am picking up a new 2008 CR-V EX-L with Nav 2WD
Blue Pearl with Gray Leather
$26,373
Accessories installed price (they did not charge me at all for installation and all accessories were discounted)
Tailgate spoiler
Cargo net
Body side molding
Auto day/night compass mirror
Back up sensors
Fog lights
Roof rack
$2044
Total price with destination, etc is $28,657 cash. No trade in.
I think this is okay, since I am in San Diego. It was harder to find an EX-L with Nav on a dealers lot as most dealers had the lower end models instead. I ended up getting it from Tony (Internet Sales) at Fuller Honda in Chula Vista. We got great treatment from Mission Valley Honda, but they could not match the price and felt in fact the price with accessories must have been a mistake.

I just picked mine last night
This black on black CR-V EX-L 4WD with tailgate spoiler
Car w spoiler $26,119 (car + installed spoiler + destination)
Out of the door (TTL) $28,200 - no trade-in, cash
What I have noticed during car shopping there is a HUGE disparity for a price for options. That is why I did not take fog lights - $600 for having them seems unreasonable ($325 MSRP)
Dealer - Honda on Grand in Elmhurst, IL
Altogether great experience - car priced as quoted over phone, no games or shoving up my ass things I did not wanted (like in Schaumburg)

The car is a Black on Black 4WD w/o NAVI (we have a portable)
This was at Concord Honda, thru Costco Auto Program.
