Anyone know of a product for removing oxidation from aluminum?
I just bought a 2000 CR-V, that unfortunately came from the salt belt. The engine compartment looks horrible w/just about every bolt head having surface rust, as well as the engine and transmission be coated w/oxidation.
Also, what is Honda's Rust Warranty when it comes to paint? I've got one spot that appears to be rusting under the paint.
Thx

.Sorry to hear you got a neglected engine bay. I am in the rust/salt belt and thanks to frequent cleanings over the years, mine has zero rust or oxidation under the hood.
As you are not the original owner, Honda's corrosion warranty won't be any good to you.

The rust of metal is due to oxidation. After removing the rust with a wire brush, spray the metal with vegetable oil like Pam. The spraying will form a surface on the metal that will keep the air off. Some aluminum can get soft from a lot of oxidation and if bolts are soft replace them. The use of car wax in a spray form can also help reduce oxidation. Blue Coral car wash also has wax in it which will build up if you use it and spray under the car with it in a presure washer. It's a good thing that the exhaust systems in the V's are stainless steel or a rust belt V would be needing pipes and mufflers too.

I am in it with you. I picked up my 00' V just after you did and it came from Chicago. I've no rust where its important but I do have surface oxidation a lots of little things like you mentioned.
I know of no commerically available product to get rid of it. Oxidation and rust require elbow grease and ltos of time to fix and remove. The choice I made in buying this car results in me having to deal with all the little rusty bolts and peices. You can however, as the new owner, keep it clean, washed and lubed to prevent it from getting worse.
