View Full Version : 2008 roof rack
Hello
I'm new here and did a brief seach of the archives. Excuse me if this has been answered before.
My wife has a 2008 crv. It has no roof racks, but looks like it is ready to receive the hardware. I am likely going with honda factory racks or a generic equivalent if the same quality. They look like they would catch less wind than the yakima or thule racks.
I have been offered a set from an older model element for free plus shipping. Does anyone know if they are the same as on older model crvs and elements (including the mounting hardware) or are they also a new design?
Thanks

Honda racks are specific to each model.2007-2008 CRV racks will be the same.Racks from older models or other model Hondas will not fit.
thanks, I was afraid that was the case!
Think I am right to go with the Honda accessories?

Are you adding it for looks only or do you plan on carrying anything?
If you are doing it for looks alone i like the Honda rack....if you are actully planning on using the rack Thule or Yakima will give you more options.
Not for looks - think it looks better without them. They will be used on occasion to carry longboards. I have a rack and pad system that will work with about anything and is easy to remove when not in use. If it were my car I would like one with more options like yakima has. But as it is my wife's car I want them to look as unobtrusive as possible when not in use and not be too noisy or decrease fuel economy too much.

I have the Honda factory roof racks for my 2007 CRV. I had purchased the roof rack and installed them a couple of months after purchasing my CRV. They were extremely easy to install. The longest part of the install process is to tighten the nut on each thread (after removing the plastic cover) and then removing the nut repeatedly until the paint is removed from the screw portion. After all is done it just slides right on the screws then the nut is then placed to tighten the rack down. All you will have to do is go to a hardware store (Home Depot/Lowes) to get a Torx 40 socket (this is from memory, check the instructions on the type of socket) and a torque wrench to get this done. I have carried ladders and crown molding so far on the rack without problems. I can't say anything about the other racks (thule/yakima) since I have no experience with these racks. I purchased my roof rack over the internet and saved a lot of money over what the dealership charges for them aswell.
Hope this helps.
Thanks - I found a site on the internet with instructions how to put them on that says just what you say. Here is the link if anyone is interested.

Also look at www.collegehillshonda.com. This is where I purchased my roof rack and all weather mats. They have podcasts instructions available as well. Here is the direct link to the roof rack section of their site: http:/www.collegehillshonda.com/honda_crv_accessories/07_08_crv_attachments.htm

I just purchased mine for about $138.00 shipped. However, I just notice somebody else sells them for $115.00 shipped. Dang, I got rip off. These aftermarket ones are actually better then Honda. They hold a total weight of twice what Honda can hold.

This is the one I bought on Ebay. Use the keyword on ebay "HONDA CR-V, CRV 2007 - 2008, NEW ROOF RACK CROSSBAR KIT" for about $138.00 shipped.

I purchased some non OEM racks off of E-Bay thinking I was getting a sweet deal. Turns out, they are crap. They didn't fit without flexing them very, very hard, and pounding them on. The quality was also poor.
I am sending them back for a refund (hopefully) and have already purchased and installed OEM racks. I got them from DCH Honda of Oxnard, CA. They sell them online through E-Bay.

Sounds like a Honda salesman to me.... The non-OEM roof racks that I purchased from ebay fit perfectly and they support more then twice the weight of the OEM Honda. I believe that all 3 of the people on ebay that sell the non-OEM roof racks are selling the same item since all 3 of them support the identical weight. Also, when I installed my roof racks, it only took 30 minutes with the included tool. I try to never purchase OEM Honda accessories stuff because they are a RIP OFF. The only OEM Honda stuff I am buying is the actual car. (and that was at $400.00 below invoice.)
I have an 07 and purchased the Thule fit kit and rails. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $270 total with shipping. Seems like alot, but they are rock solid and extremely versatile.
Consider what your putting on the roof and how often. Is it a $3,000 bicycle? $750 skis? A kayak or canoe? I'm not sure why you would take a chance and try to save $150 at the risk of loosing or damaging whatever it is you are hauling. Seems like a small investment to make when you look at the big picture.

I think Thule is a well known company with a great reputation. I would trust company like Thule and OEM over other outfits. When in doubt, I would suggest OEM.

Just because you paid more, doesn't mean the quality is any better. I can tell you that my Honda CR-V has way better quality then any Mercedes and BMW SUV out there. However, the brand "Thule" does resemble quality. The non-OEM, no brand, Roof Rack I bought appears to be strong, but I haven't tested the 150 pounds they claim it can hold. Anyway a roof rack isn't that hard to make. I only purchased the roof rack for looks also. If it was an electronic gadget, then for sure I would go with quality brand name stuff. That's the reason why I purchased the "Backtracker" brand reverse sensors that retails for 4 times more then the generic ones they sell on ebay. However, "Backtracker" is still 3 times cheaper then OEM Honda.

I purchased it on Ebay for less then $100.00. Most places retail it at $150.00. I did install it myself. These are the same sensors they use on luxury cars. I posted pictures on the forum under "Do-it-yourself mods."

That's strange. I just checked honda.com and it's states their OEM roof rack has only a 75 pound capacity. Weird? I don't know which one is accurate.

Stanlam, my point wasn't just because I paid more that it's better. My point was that in some cases folks tend to be penny wise and pound foolish.
I have no problem buying 3rd party items that are of good quality to save a couple bucks- however when your cooking down the highway with some sort of posession strapped to the roof and something potentially happens, what is the savings??
Personally, for me- the investment in my Thule system was/is money well spent. I put several thousand dollars in bikes or ski gear on the roof regularly, and time after time the Thule works flawlessly. If you are buying a rack for the look, or to use once a year for something small- I agree in saving the cash.
