View Full Version : Receiver hitch suggestions ?

I'm looking to add an aftermarket 2" receiver hitch to my '07 EX-L. Honda's hitch is too labor intensive and apparently requires cutting to install. And, all of my hitch stuff is 2", rather than 1 and 1/4".

"Valley" hitch and "Curt" hitch make a round-tube style that simply bolts-on (...temporarily remove muffler hanger for the bolt-on and then re-attach). Seems quite simple.

So... Anyone here have a 2" installed on their '07 model? Likes/dislikes? Other hitch suggestions??

Loads of good posts.
(I did the search for you but for some reason, the link isn't showing right so I didn't post the link)

Thanks, but I did a search and couldn't locate anything relative to the '07 and '08 models. The only pics available seem to be on the pre-'07 CR-Vs, and are square-tube design. :(

I thought there was... Anyway, I have seen the Curt on an 07. It does hang down lower than a factory one but is sooo much stronger and 2" accessories are much more available.

The 2007's and newer have the spare mounted under the rear where the well was in the 2006. The tow hitches are now in the way of the spare. Try Hitch World or Tow World. Remember it can't handle more than 200 LBS tongue wieght or 1500 LBS trailer and load. That means a Class I is in order. If you need to hook up a bike rack get a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter.

Valley makes a class 3 for the CRV...you should be able to pick one up at your local Uhaul.

Thanks, all, for the info. I'll take look at the Valley-brand. I need a class-3, I suppose, to get the 2" receiver. All of my hitch accessories are 2"...

They also have the wiring harness adapter, much cheaper than the OEM Honda one.

Try this link (http://www.hitchsource.com/classiiitrailerhitch-p-27809.html?reviews_id=284). $119.99 plus shipping.

I'll probably go for the 2" receiver for my '07. My 1 1/4" bike rack includes a 2" adaptor.

Thanks for the link. I've been eyeing the Curt and the Valley brand (...they appear to be nearly identical in construction and are 2" receivers). The Curt shipped to my house is 40.00 bucks, though . I'm going to have to wait for a free/discount shipping sale or hunt locally.

etrailer currently has 99 cent shipping for all orders over $150. Since you need the $30 wiring adapter anyway, get it at the same time as the hitch.

Everytime I get a new or used vehicle I just bring it over to U-Haul and have them install a class 3 hitch and wiring. It usually cost under 300 bucks and I am done with it.

I ordered/installed the Curt 2" receiver (Model 13555?) on my '08 CR-V. The Curt is very stout and the install was EZ - I did it by myself in 30-40 minutes.

I have installed the wiring converter (with flat 4 connector) but I have not yet towed anything.

I intend to use the hitch for a bike rack, to accomodate a hitchhaul type platform and to tow a small (4X8) utility trailer for lawnmower, lumber, etc.

I just put on my Valley 82163 Class III Hitch Receiver that I bought from Amazon for $99 shipping included! I had a rough time also with the muffler hangers on my 2008 CRV was getting no where fast...but it wasn't until I came back in for one more internet search and found that dishwashing liquid is a good lubricant to help get these off. It is almost as slick as KY Jelly or something like that. Some suggested WD40 or silicone but this is a not a good idea because it will stay lubed or slick for a while. The dishwashing liquid will wash away or dry soon after. Here is my picture!

As you will notice, mine is a 2 in" and had one of the 1 1/4 Valley on my old 2000 Subaru and had to have a lame extender to make it a 2" so my Thule Rack would fit. My car is rated for 1500 and the Class III will do up to 4000, but in my mind you can have the bigger hitch but realize that you shouldn't tow that much.

I see Amazon has the Valley hitch for $127.43 (seems to have gone up in price from the $99 it used to be) with free shipping, but they also suggest two Reese hitches as similar:

Reese Tow Power 77147 (http://www.amazon.com/Reese-Towpower-77147-Insta-Hitch-Receiver/dp/B0016KFX9G/) for $112.45 (seems to be a class I 1.25" hitch)

and

Reese Towpower 44575 (http://www.amazon.com/Reese-Towpower-44575-Professional-Receiver/dp/B0016KFVY8/) for $171.39 (class III 2")

Since there is a Reese dealer a few miles from me, I was going to try to get one there and make sure it fit right in person, but are they better or worse than the Valley or Curt or Hidden Hitch models?
