The estimated cost for 2009 diesel over gas is the savings on fuel in two years. The figures arrived at indicate approximatly 5% more than gasoline engines or about $1620 US so they should sell for $32400 US . The 2.2 i-CDTi Tier 2 Bin 5 will have a common rail injector system (high pressue) with a special (high cost) emissions converter. It is rated 150HP and 260 Ft Lbs. of Torque. The design calls for liquid filled motor and transmission mounts, under hood insulation, and padding under carpet to quiet the ride. The emisions control will be legal in all 50 states. So far the US cetane rating will be 55-60 which is higher than Europe which is 50. A mention of require additives has been made during cold weather to break up wax that occurs when the 55-60 cetane diesel goes cold. Warning about algea in the new diesel and sludge at the bottom of fuel storage tanks indicate other posible problems to overcome posibly with special filters on the vehicles fuel system and or at the pumps. European highway mileage reports indicate better than estimated results. Hopefully the US version will be capable of almost 40MPG HWY and average 28 mixed travel for the light footed. This would be a 28% increase in mileage over gasoline engines. Since gasoline is 5% cheaper than Diesel the net result in dollars is a 26.6% savings after the two years it will take to recover the additional cost over gasoline the engine. Or your fuel dollar for diesel will only cost you 73.4 cents US after the first two years compaired to the gasoline fuel cost. That could make the resales of diesels 20% higher than gasoline powered.:D
