No cold idle when in gear.

I have an '01 that will not idle when it is cold and in gear. When I first start it, it will idle normally as long as it is in park. If you put it in gear and dont give it gas it dies almost like the key was turned off. If you give it gas it will accelerate normally but at the first stop sign it will die before you come to a full stop. If I try to restart it immediately it has to crank for maybe 30 seconds before it will start, almost like it was flooded. Once started it will idle normally as long as it is in park. Once the temp guage moves about a quarter of an inch then it idles as it should in gear or park. Initially I thought it was the IACV, so I replaced it but the problem stayed the same. Since it has to be cold and in gear I am wondering if the PCM is the problem. HAs anybody seen this problem.

Dying when the engine is cold is not a good sign. You have one of the classic symptoms of tight exhaust valves! When was the last time you had them adjusted? Has the check engine light come on?

Well the valves haven't been adjusted, but the car only has 60k. If it is bad valves why does it idle in park? What is the problem with the valves? Is it something I can test for? I can pull the head if needed.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. The valves MUST be adjusted every 30k miles, despite what the erroneous owner's manual states. This is the same engine that the previous Integra had and it had 15k mile valve adjustment intervals. Integra owners who followed the manual did not have burnt valve issues. This engine was also used in Europe with 50k kilometer valve adjustment intervals. Europeans have long been used to maintenance items like valve adjustments and they never had the burnt valve issues either.

It dies when cold and in gear because of the load on the engine.
Trust me on this.
Get the valves adjusted immediately. If you have it done, ask them to set them to the loose side of the specs and that you want to receive the before and after readings. Then, post those numbers here for others to benefit from.

My local dealer charges about $100 which includes a new valve cover gasket.
I do mine myself. It takes me about 1.5 hours, dependent upon how much beer I consume while watching football on TV at the same time. Everyone should have a TV in the garage... :)
