Alright my brakes are fine but I am always looking towards future costs of my vehicle and I was wondering what you guys pay to have your brake pads changed. I really don't want to do it myself (brakes aren't something I want to screw up) but I was wondering how much I should pay I am not quite sure how much mechanic charges I think its 100 bucks per wheel or it coud be per axle. Also how much do you pay for labor I was thinking I might save on the cost of parts if I ordered brake pads online and had them installed by my mechanic I could make sure I got quality stuff for my money since I am sure most regular mechanics just use the cheapest crap.

I just won an ebay auction for some factory front pads for my 00' V for $36 shipped: thats about $15 cheaper (meaning the OEM pads are around $50 or so) than I could find anywhere else online.

I don't even need brakes yet but I saw this good deal. I agree that brakes are important to do; but being a mechanic at work and at home I've never let anyone else do mine.

I would expect to pay around $50-70 for OEM pads. Any place you take it will act as a middle-man and mark up the price a bit on the parts. So if you are not planning to do brakes yourself then most definitely, yes, you can save a bit of $ by finding the pads cheap online and ONLY paying labor for the install.

I am thinking of ordering pads but I Hear Honda's will only take OEM otherwise you get noises and problems.

That's true of almost any aftermarket Vs OEM pad.

When you compare costs, compare apples-to-apples: Honda factory pads not only fit precisely (I've had to file-down many aftermarket backing plates) they come with new anti-squeal shims and the "quiet-paste/slider lubricant" that you smear on the back of the pads to make sure they don't squeal. That stuff might be available aftermarket but it will drive up the cost of those "bargain" pads.

Please bear this in mind: You can specify genuine Honda parts when you bring your V in for brakes, and the shop will get those parts at discount (or Wholesale), usually about 15 - 25% off. So unless you find that Ebay Steal, you may just want to go to the online dealer pages and find out the going rate.

I bet the Honda stuff isn't THAT much more when you get the job done at a knowledgeable independent mechanic.
