Ok, this may sound funny, but does anyone else think the spedometer increments are strange? Its numbered every 20 mph. Every 5 marks represents 10 mph. So my question is...how do I know when my car is going 65 mph (the speed limit on CA highways)? If essentially the car goes up in 2 mph increments I can go 64 or 66. Its trivial I know, but sometimes I over analyze. My solution...go 70 mph and hope that if the CHP pulls me over they'll understand my pain. Is this too random or has anyone else noticed this?

There was another thread asking why the speedometer goes to 150 mph (140 on the 07s & probably 08s). It seems a bit odd when the vehicle's computer will limit the top speed to something just over 100 mph. The consensus was that the older members (such yours truly) preferred the lower top end and the five increments and the younger members (the ones who can still see the increments on the speedometer) thought it was cool. I think someone thought it would be cool to go 150 mph.... In a CR-V? No thanks.

You are right--you have to judge the 5 mph increments, but, hey it is cool!
I would not rely on the CHP feeling your pain. Law enforcement is as much about generating revenue as it is public safety. Does California enforce speeding at 5 mph over the limit? Numerous municipalities around here will nab you for 5 over, but the popular conception (subject to the whims of the cop) is that the Pennsylvania State Police won't stop you on the interstates until you exceed 7 mph over. I am not sure that argument would hold up in court.

I wouldn't rely on the above information in Summerville WV or the entire state of South Carolina. I have a friend in SC that got a ticket for 2 mph over riding side by side with a cop. He fought it and was told by the judge that SC does not have a grace speed. There are a number of municipalities in Pennsylvania that will nail you for 5 over in residential areas.

Yeah luckily the CHP tends to start at 10 mph over the limit, but if the officer is having a bad day he'll nab ya for something as simple as 2 mph over. Especially if you're down near the military base, the CHP loves handing out tickets around there!

Thats insane you are allowed a bit because of car speedos being not accurate if it was in NY that cop would have been chewed out.

It's widely believed that in the UK you're allowed 10% +3mph over the posted limit, so in theory that means you're allowed to do 69mph in a 60 limit, but try doing that and you'll get nicked every time
There's been cases of people doing 2mph over and being nicked
I've often wondered about the speedo on my G1 as it goes upto 140mph and is marked at 20mph increments, so 20mph,40mph etc which considering the main speed limits in the UK are 30,50,60 and 70 mph is a bit of a PITA!!

is a strong term for the situation. Again law enforcement is as much about generating revenue as public safety. If you're concerned about the accuracy of your speedometer, drive the speed limit and I bet you will never get a speeding ticket.

Auto manufacturers have to be within +10% accuracy for speedometers I believe. I know for trucks it has to be within 5mph @ 50mph (meaning, the thing should at worst read 45mph).
I do not know if NHTSA has a regulation for passenger cars.
I believe Honda's requirement is within 10%
The law is the law, if you're going 2mph over the speed limit, you are speeding, and should get a ticket. Granted, within that degree of speeding, I believe it is at the officer's discretion on if they should pull you over and ticket you, as it always is.
If I got pulled over for 2mph over the speed limit, I'd take it to court and try to argue the potential accuracy of my vehicle, maybe even go so far as to do timed distances etc.
