View Full Version : How did I end up with all these Honda's?

I suppose it's time to introduce myself to the collective :D

I've just recently purchased a 97 4WD LX. A real cherry, with only 104k on it and every 15k service documented from the older lady who owned it before me for 10 yrs. It's my first Honda, even though I already own a Civic and Del Sol. Sounds strange, right? ;) The other two are my wife's (Del Sol) & daughter's (Civic DX). I trust both vehicles implicitly with the two most important people in my life, and I do all the maintenance on them myself, but I've always been a Jeep/VW guy for most of my life. That changed last week when I bought the CR-V. Now my driveway looks like a Honda commercial...

I really, REALLY like this thing! I've always preferred a more rugged vehicle, but as I get older I'm starting to appreciate a smoother, quieter ride on the highway. I'm certainly enjoying 22-25 MPG with a 2.0l 4, than the 16 MPG I was getting in the 4.0l I-6 in my Jeep. I'm a drummer by trade, and I have to be able to carry my kits around to gigs and sessions. That always had me in Jeep Cherokees (and some Chevy Vans back in the day :p). I really didn't see myself in a Honda, until I ran across a ridiculous deal on this V. I bought it knowing I could sell it for a profit if I didn't like it, but I can't see myself getting rid of this car anytime soon. It's enjoyable to drive, great on gas and all in all, I'm totally digging it! It really seems like the perfect vehicle for me.

So now I've ended up as the owner of an all-Honda garage, and I think I'm cool with that. Heck, it makes buying oil, filters, PS fluid, tranny fluid and all those other H-specific products a lot easier, since almost all is shared between the 3 cars, and I certainly appreciate the reliability and relative ease of maintenance on them.

My new-to-me V has only two issues that perhaps you guys can shed some light on...

My turn signals don't cancel
Power mirrors don't work

I've checked the fuses on the mirrors, they are on the same circuit as the Heater/AC relay, which is working fine. I pulled the fuse and it's fine. Are the mechanical switches prone to failure? I pulled it out of the dash and cleaned the contacts, but no dice. I noticed a switch for sale in the classifieds, seems like a simple fix if that's the problem.

I'm totally baffled by the signals. They worked great for the first 2 days I had the car, then suddenly stopped canceling after a turn. No click when the steering wheel spins back. I don't recall anything snapping or sticking, it just stopped one day when I got in the car.

Anyways, glad to be here... Thanks for any help on my two little issues. Other than those two things (well, and the OEM CD player/stereo sucking all balls) I have nothing but praise for the new wheels!!

Take it easy,

MG

Wow, I can feel the love!!

Guess I'll pop in at HondaSUV.com - that definitely seems to be the busier forum.

Can't help with your 97 problems but I can provide a welcome to the forum. So....Welcome to the forum.:D Very sorry you didn't get a prompt response. It is the exception rather than the rule.

Lots of us post on multiple forums. All have plenty of good info but I think you will find this one to be more open to occasional posters. Certain other forums (to remain nameless) are dominated by 10 to 12 "regulars" who will hijack threads, talk over/past the OP and turn well intended thread starters into cutesy personal chat rooms.:( Beware.

Power mirror circuits normally have 4 components that can go bad: switch, relay, fuse, motors.

If both aren't working, it's normally one of the first 3. If one isn't working, it's normally the motor, but sometimes is the switch.

relay is tucked in under the dash by the fuse box I believe.

Thx cderalow. It's both of them, and it's not the fuse, so it must be either the relay or switch. I'll throw a multimeter on the switch and see if it's working, I suppose.

Anyone have an idea on the turn signals? That is really starting to bother me. I can deal with the power mirrors (I'm the only one that drives the V and they are adjusted fine, I rarely touch my mirror angles), but the turn signals are driving me nuts. I searched both here and the HondaSUV.com forums, only found one reference to this problem and after someone posted a diagram, the original poster never came back to say whether or not he got it fixed.

If the signals don't cancel its normally the cancelling cam on the steering column.
It is not an uncommon problem on older civics and crv's.

The part you need is part of number 15 here:

Cool, thx lizzurd. So I just need to buy that assembly

35251-S10-003 015 BODY, SWITCH - 1 $25.94

and then take the column out and replace? Sounds easy enough, I suppose!!

The steering wheel and airbag have to be pulled.

If you haven't worked with airbags before i would leave it to someone who knows what they are doing....airbags are not to be taken lightly and can be dangerous is the proper procedures for removing and installing them are not folloed.

Well that changes things a bit... I won't be playing with airbags, so I'd be looking at a several hundred dollar shop bill to replace a $20 piece of plastic?

That blows. And this is a known issues on mid-90's Civics/CRV's? Great. Looks like I'll be canceling my turn signals manually for the next 5 years...

I don't think the labour will be in the hundreds...give your dealer or a shop you trust a call for a quote....it can't hurt to try.

Heh. Yeah, I live in Charlotte, where every shop thinks they are some NASCAR quality pit crew and labor rates *start* at $88/hr. No shop in town in going to quote less than 2-3 hrs to remove airbags and the steering wheel. I had a recall on my Cherokee which involved removing the steering wheel and airbag... I saw the bill (covered by the recall, thank god) and it was well over $700 worth of labor to pull that out and replace a $40 faulty switch in the ignition column.

I'll call around, I have a good friend who works for one of Rick Hendrick's shops here in town. He'll cut me the best deal he can if I have to take it in, I might see if he wants to pull a side job on a Sunday and come make $50 and 12 pack of beer to do it in my garage.

Thanks for the quick replies!!

$88 an hour isn't bad......Here at my dealer we are at $107/hr.

Notice I said starts @ $88/hr. Many are much much higher, especially if you are talking about Benz/Lexus/Infiniti/BMW or even VW/Audi shops. I tend to do as much as I can myself, I have a pretty well stocked tool bench and as I mentioned, a good friend who's an ASE certified master mech and diagnostician.

You know how quoted jobs run.. Would you or your shop pull a steering wheel w/ ABS for anything less than 2-3 hrs of labor? :p
