I'm trying to buy my wife a remote start for Christmas. Do the 03's need a key bypass?

Thanks.

East Tennessee.

Oh, it's not a need, it's a want. It's hot here in the summer and cold in the winter, and letting the vehicle's heater/AC get a head start is a big comfort/convenience.
So do the '03's have transponders in the keys?

No transponder in the keys in the USA.

Are you sure? 'Cause I can get a bypass for $30, and if they install the alarm/remote start and it turns out I do have a transponder key, it won't work, and I'll have to buy one and reschedule more installation, and it'll blow the surprise. So none of the US '03's have transponders? When did they start?
Thanks again. Hope I'm not being too much of a pain.

Thanks again. Hope I'm not being too much of a pain.Take a look at your key. Our North America 04 doesn't have one although the European ones have had them (immobilizer) for years. Since it appears that you are going to have someone else install it, why not call various companies and ask them what works. Make sure they do a proper install and do not simply hack wiring and use electrical tape on connections. How long is the warranty, etc. ?

The transponder chip is in the key and the immobilizer unit is mount on the ignition switch assembly.
