hello everyone. i have a 97 crv lx 4wd auto (150,000 miles) that has been acting up recently. the check engine light is on and the car's idle bounces from 1500-2000 rpm when in park or neutral. the car also idles around 1500 when in drive. this doesnt go away even when the motor is warmed-up. i went to autozone to get the dianogsis and the guy told me that it was a faulty icv. i had it replaced with a brand new icv that bought from honda ($200), and the car still does the same thing. nothing has change. please if anyone can help me out, i would really appeciate it. my little gas saver crv is also getting really poor gas mileage now also. please help!!!

Pulling a code is not a diagnosis. The code will indicate what system needs to be inspected.

The engine is getting too much air for the indicated throttle position at idle. This will cause the rpm to climb, and the PCM will go into fuel cut to drop it back down, which is why the engine speed surges up and down.

The idle control system is unable to compensate and maintain the idle speed within it's design parameter, and you have a DTC indicating an idle control system fault.

While the Idle Control Valve itself can cause this symptom and DTC, a significant vacuum leak can do the same thing. There is also a cold idle valve that can stick open and cause this.

Unless you want to throw parts at it until the problem goes away, you would be better off to consider having your fault actually diagnosed by a competant technician, rather than some guy who works at a parts store.

Very nicely stated, Honda Tech!

Way too many people, and even some techs, don't bother to diagnose. They just buy and install parts.

Hey Now....i resemble that remark!!!!

Very good advice.....I lose count at the number of times i have customers and repair shops calling me with and without codes asking what the problem is. Unless i know someone and i am 100% sure what the problem is i will not give advice. I am not a qualified tech and i don't paid to give out what could be potentially wrong advice.

Has your CRV ever had the timing chain changed? Could cause idle change and run rough, then blow!

Has your CRV ever had the timing chain changed? Could cause idle change and run rough, then blow!97-2001's do not have a timing chain. They have a belt which needs to be replaced every 7 years or 105k miles in "normal" conditions. Severe conditions, like Canada or Arizona, for example, require sooner changes.
