View Full Version : Short 07 Tire Life

My 07 tires have worn to the wear bars at 26,000 miles. I've made sure they have been maintained and rotated properly. Why the short tire life? I know the big three used to throw crap tires on new cars to save some pennies, but I didn't expect it from Honda.
I asked the dealer about the problem and they just shrugged their shoulders and said "sorry no tread wear warranty on those."
My wife's parents bought Ford Escape 4 years ago and at 70k they still have the factory tires, and guess what they are not even close to the wear bars! What's the deal Honda? Should I expect for everything else to last as long as the tires?
This is about the third thing to go wrong, but first that hasn't been under warranty. Lets just say I'm unsatisfied that Honda in the era of 80k tire tread wear warranties can't pony up enough dough to put good or at least ok shoes on their new CRVs to last past the crappy 36k mile warranty!
Honda if you’re reading this please Note: These are the details that make loyalist leave a brand!

I have Bridgestone Duelers on mine. I noticed that they seem to wear fast as well. They were properly inflated, and yet I seen signs of wear after the first month I owned the car. I pulled them off for the winter, but I doubt that I will make 26K before the wear bars are showing. I am not impressed with the OEM tires either, but I didn't expect much to be honest.

I never expect too much out of the OEM tires of any new car that I have purchased. With this said, 26,000 miles is way to short. ksumarcus, do you have the Bridgestones or the Continentals? My 07 EX-L has the Continentals and will be interesting to see how long these last.

My '03 Ody came with Michelin Symmetry tires. They wore to the wear bars by 26,000 miles. The Honda dealership referred me to a Michelin tire dealership.
Surprisingly, my local Michelin dealership contacted the regional Michelin rep who authorized that the Symmetry's be pro-rated toward the purchase of a set of other Michelin tires. I bought 4 Hydroedge tires for ~$150 total.
I had a pre-existing customer relationship with the tire dealership and the owners clearly demonstrated an interest by taking the time to contact Michelin.
I have been disappointed with Bridgestone (Firestone ) tires before and wouldn't buy them as a replacement set.
Last summer I put a set of Goodyear Assurance ComforTred's on my '04 Accord (from Sears). They were very quiet and had a 80k mile tread wear rating. I swapped them within 30 days (Goodyear's satisfaction policy) for a set of Assurance TripleTred for added performance in the rain. They also have a 80k mile treadwear warranty.
Check out the performance ratings at TireRack.com (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/goodyear/goodyear.jsp).

After reading Binky's post, I looked at the tire warranty that I got with the car. A casual read indicates that it is not worth the paper it is written on. There is nothing about treadlife being guaranteed. For defects in manufacturing, after the first 25% or 12 months (which ever comes first), they are going to prorate the tire based on wear and charge for mounting and balancing. Unless you want another type of Bridgestone / Firestone tire, I don't believe it is worth pursuing. But check out your warranty papers none the less, my eyes glaze over rapidly when reading fine print.

I also have the Bridgestone Dueller 470's on our CRV. If you look at the rating they are really only a 30,000 mile tire so your mileage of 26k is just about right before replacement. Make sure to have a tire place check your treadwear as there are 2 (two) wear-bar indicators on the tire. It may look like your tires are "worn" but in fact they may not be. OTOH, if you don't feel safe with the tires and winter is here...might be time for a change.

That is a little extreme IMHO
Just replace them with something better, this a complaint on a lot of forums... Toyota included.
So will you go buy an Escape now because it has tires that last 70K but the actual vehicle will barely go past 100K without requiring a major repair?

Ok, so it sounds like this is a normal occurrence for the 2007's OEM Bridgestone Dueler HT's. I've done some shopping around and still haven't come to a conclusion on which tire to get. What does everyone recommend? I live in NC so snow isn't a big worry and most of my driving is highway so mileage and quiet are at the top of the list of priorities (hence 28,000 at less than a year.) Thoughts? How does everyone feel about Tire Rack? Good or no good?

... mileage of 26k is just about right before replacement.
Not for a Michelin Symmetry: Michelin® Symmetry® tires carry an additional 65,000 mile limited warranty for treadwear or mileage. Not recommended for the CR-V, but...
Goodyear warranties the SUV Fortera TripleTred: "One of the best warranties among SUV tires will cover your Fortera featuring TripleTred Technology tires with 60,000 miles/96,000 kilometers of tread life." - recommended for CR-V.

Tirerack is a very good choice. So are Costco if you have them in your area.

To play devil's advocate here (although I could not stand the original Duellers on our 04 V) ...
Would you really want a tire that has rubber so hard that it can even remotely possibly attain 85,000 miles before changing? Rubber that hard will not corner well, will give a harsher ride and at 15,000 miles per year, will probably be no good due to weathering issues by 85,000 miles anyway. i replace most of my tires about 2-3 years despite tread left. I also ensure that new tires are "fresh" and not already a year old. Rubber begins to deteriorate right after it is made. Fresh tires perform better.

I just read the previous posts on short tire life for the '07 CRV. I went out and measured my tire tread depth at 6/32" on all four tires. The original measurement for the tires when new was 9/32". My '07 CRV EX-L AWD has 12,100 miles on it as we speak and I am meticulous as to maintaining the correct tire air pressure and rotating the tires every 7500 miles. Thus, my tires have worn 3/32" in 12,000 miles...or 1/32" wear every 4000 miles. Most wear bars will be flush with the tire tread and at the depth of legal use (at least in Illinois) at 2/32". So, it is looking like my tires will be worn out at 28,000 miles or so if the tire wear in the future is the same as it has been since new.
YMMV Dennis

#4 Fresh tires perform better.
#1 Yup, I would want a well performing tire with high mileage capability. Current technology today provides for tire compounds with resistance to ultra-violet deterioration while providing superior road performance characteristists for many miles (i.e. 60,000-70,000 with normal driving).
#2 That's not what this TireRack performance review (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/TireTestServlet?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Fortera+TripleTred&tirePageLocQty=) has concluded.
#3 I would rather replace my tires when performance begins to deteriorate. Following a replacement schedule you suggest would mean I'd be buying replacement tires every 1.5 years.
#4 At Road Atlanta or autocross? - yes. But then driving a CR-V 25,000 miles/yrs it is not unreasonable to expect acceptable performance for 60 - 65,000 miles if you purchase a quality tire.

OTOH, I did put on some Hankook RO6's on my 1999 GM minivan. Those tires had an 85,000 life and they performed extremely well on that vehicle for 91,000 miles. I would have gotten more mileage (still life left according to dealer) except that the engine blew up last X-mas eve and I was forced to buy a new car...our 07CRV. Granted, I put 20-25k on a season so for me I run through tires pretty quick.
