Do you have a Honda rack? Do you have any accessories mounted on it?

Roof rack was purchased from Honda dealer and seems to be original equipement

I am now wandering if there is any difference between front and rear bar and that could be the cause of noise

Anyone outhere can tell me the difference between the bars so that I can verify mines

Thanks

From what I remembered when I installed mine is that the front and rear are the same. It isn't too noisy to me. I know it is there, but it doesn't bother me.

installed mine today.
it's aftermarket but looks and fits exactly the same as OEM honda.

there is a difference between front and rear bar but if it was installed by dealer then one would assume it's installed correctly.
yes there is a bit of noise. took the car out tonite for a drive after i installed the rack and there is a bit of noise. turn up the radio and problem solved :D

This is a long shot, but I just read something in the Honda ServiceNews (Sept07, page 3) about 3M Stone Gaurd causing more wind noise on the power mirrors on Civics. Is there any possibility that this or something of the same genre is causing wind noise on the roof racks?

Noise is now gone, Rack is in my basement

THere is a slot all the lenght of the transversal bars so it is like a whisle, no wonder there is so much noise

I will find a way to fill this slot and install back

5 minutes installation,

Happy New Year

I recall a Honda Service News article on the roof rack and what may be causing the noise. If I can find it, I'll post the article for you.

Well, here it is. I didn't remember that it was intended for earlier models but it is probably still an appropriate article to help you out. It makes sense. Obviously, the part numbers listed may not be valid for an 07 and up. Click on the link to see the illustration that is in the article.

Wind Noise From the Roof Rack

NOTE: This article applies to ’02–04 CR-Vs, ’03–04
Elements, ’99–04 Odysseys, and ’03–04 Pilots.

If you’re installing an accessory bike rack or ski
rack, you’ve got to remove the rubber inserts
(strips) in the roof rack crossbars in order to install
the rack mountings. But without those inserts, the
open spaces left in the crossbars can make a
rather nasty noise while driving. (It’s like blowing
across the opening of a bottle or a flute.)
To keep the roof rack quiet—and your service
customer happy—cut the rubber inserts you
removed into appropriate length pieces to fill in
those open spaces. Give the pieces that would go
under the rack mountings to your customer just in
case he or she decides to remove the mountings
later.
If you need more rubber inserts, use this ordering

I will contact dealer next week and see if they have those part number available or to see if I could see one and find something else that would fit in there and cut the noise down

There had to be a way, Honda people are not that stupid

Thanks a million

We too have lots of resonance type noise apparently from our roof rack, dealer installed on 2007 EX. It seems to be coupled to the engine in some way and is maximum when maintaining a steady 1600 rpm and 51/52 mph but also occurs at times at other speeds while maintaining steady 1600 rpm.

I plan to bring to dealer in the next few weeks and see what he can suggest. If he does not have clear solution that works, I will probably ask him to remove rack and see if I still have the problem.

I just got a 2008 CR-V with roof rack and everything is great, except for this high pitched whistle sound at anything over 40mph.

Does anyone know if the rubber insert fix applies to 2007+ CR-Vs?

Thanks, I will look into my rack and see if filling the slot is the answer.

Checked the rack, I am not missing any inserts as far as I can tell, but I did notice that the sunroof does not look as flat as I would expect. One rear corner is a little inset. I wonder if this creates the whistle.

I hope the dealer can adjust that.

Claude, you said no more noise; what did you do to correct? We just got our 08 EX-L last week with a dealer installed roof rack. It appears to be installed correctly and the rubber insert is in place and it whistles like a teapot at 40 MPH and above. The only solution I can see is take it off or get the deflector for the sunroof. With the sunroof open the noise goes away (or I can't hear it). Hope someone can help.

The article says when adding a bike rack into the roof rack you remove the rubber from the roof rack and that will make a lot more noise than just having the roof rack alone, to minimize noise you can cut the removed rubber cut it and put back.

I installed the OEM roof rack and makes lots of noise at higher speeds, installed moonroof visor and got even more noise, installed the window deflectors and more noise.
So the only way to stop noise will be to remove all those things or just get used to it and put radio louder; nothing will fix the noise of wind hitting those parts.

you have 2 options to get rid of the noise:
- remove the rack all together
- turn up your radio volume

i have the rack installed and the noise can get quite annoying on windy days.
i've learned to ignore it, turn up the music and enjoy the drive. :D
