I've read a few threads here... and I feel a lot of people are missing what I feel is important I want a good car just a car with a couple of add-ons! Yes I can make some mutterings about Big soft comfy Heated Leathers seats, cruise control and HID headlights... But I will walk straight out ANY dealership because of a 'simple' problem (Driver foot room springs to mind) and it things like that which make a great car NOT every toy under the sun and electric everything!

Now a little about me, 22 year old, male, living in Scotland, Motor Sport Design Engineering Student…might explain the big product design specification, Hopeless Addicted Petrol-Head.

My Requirements:

"A car to help me through November" –Ok so winter here isn't exactly hell on earth… but short daylight, wet and cold and frost/rare light dusting of snow conspire against the average driver making the task of getting you where you need to be and on time just a little more difficult than in the summer. Creating a summer car is easy big engine, big power, and lots of noise, sharp handling two doors, tiny boot and enough buttons to keep your single passenger assumed? It's all about image and the motoring presses love these cars so the reviews are guaranteed to be great! Creating that day to day car is of course
a lot harder! (And the presses are sure to ignore it.)

My View of Cars:

Fundamentally a car is just a means to an end, I like cars …. I've worked for a nation car magazine and I love most forms of motor racing (I even hope to work in that field soon) but fundamentally a car is just transportation, it is expendable. And it may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice! Cars these days seem to be getting heavier and heavier (Something to do with crash safety and too many toys?) and more and more powerful –It's this recent quest for power I really don't understand Along with the blind belief that POWER and SPORT and CORNERING all the only things that are important in a vehicle.

With the above in mind that cars are bloated and disposable I start to write a simple specification for what I'd look for in ANY CAR there really is nothing specific -Ok I'm only look a certain types of cars but there is nothing new in what I'm asking!!! In my opinion all the following points I raise HAVE BEEN SOLVED! But I keep seeing these
short coming in current generation/mark vehicles. I will not buy a car just because it has a couple of toys. The car has to suit me.

Quality, Reliability, Comfortable ride, Low down Torque.

I must confess I have not read the spec of any car recently (CRV or otherwise) and I know some points seem trivial if not maybe even a little funny… but it's what I think, If you have any questions about any point I have raised I will try to explain/justify it further.

Of course it is going to hard to rate the relative importance of some items and a few are just means to an end for the creation of what I perceive to be a quality product for example:

“Memory functions on diagnostic tool socket?” –I don’t want the car to break… but if I go to the garage I want to find that intermittent problem and not waste my time!

AND

“Grab handle above door to be spring loaded and padded (To maximize head room).”
–Give me the head room and I’ll forget about it –It’s just I’ve hit my head off a couple hard plastic types!

So in no particular order here is a list of what I look for in ANY car:

Boot
A proper spare wheel.
A real jack with positive location.
Safe tools.
Rear seats fold flat. (I WANT THIS).
Back of Rear seats near vertical so no overhangs please.
Boot access as large and square as possible (I WANT THIS).
Boot has No steps or lips –I want to slide boxes in and out. (I WANT THIS).
662 liters volume.
Visibility unaffected by above items in boot. (I.e. the boot is only half full.)

Door/Access
Child locks on other 3 doors.
All door handles (inside and out) that I can get me fingers and thumbs around… not a flap!
Door handles to be near edge of door not hinge.
Grab handle above door to be spring loaded and padded (To maximize head room).
Dead locks all round (I feel the risk of thief to be higher than even MY chances of an accident).
Remote central locking –With a loop to put a key ring through.

Lights
Indicators on the OUTER CORNERS of vehicle NOT ON THE MIRRORS!
Day time running lights (normal dipped beam please.)
Car can't drive with parking lights only.
Good head lights –This is really just optics build the damn things right! HID is also welcome.
Headlights are adjustable –Including (naughty) up a bit as well as tail heavy compensation.
Two reversing lights.
Two rear fog lights.
Three rear braking lights (top may be LED cluster.)
All lights correct colour –Both indicators and rear clusters No "Lexus style".

Engine/Under the Bonnet
Good brake –I what feel and control not just power I want the brakes to 'feel' about the same regardless of load carried.
Easy Access to basic parts:
Fuses
Bulbs
Spark Plugs
Oil Filter
Battery…
Bonnet struts –Gas strut to open bonnet.
Safe to remove battery –Been here, I want no pissing about with the engine management or electric windows because I've changed/removed the battery (Anti theft radio is acceptable because of security
reasons.)
Speed Limiter –Don't thrash my car 100-125 mph/ 160-200km/h top speed?
Rev limiter –piston speed 13.5 to 15 ms-1 I don't need the revs save the engine the grief.
Boost limiter –we all know this game, lock the boost and save the turbo, engine/transmission/drive.
15,000 mile service, I'm only going service once a year.
Throttle by cable NOT BY WIRE –Cables are cheaper to replace than electronics?
All fluid caps to screw down securely –No quarter turn to unlock rubbish.
Big screen-wash-fluid reservoir -About 4 litres To get by on a weekly top up.

Inside/Toys
Good heater/De-mister –This sucker is working alone no "quick-clear-screen" options.
Height adjustable seat (plus room underneath and mounting for a steering wheel lock please).
Full Leather Seats. (I WANT THIS).
Heated front seats –Really nice to have. (I WANT THIS).
Cruise control –AS STANDARD (I WANT THIS).
Proper sized steering wheel with some weight behind it –No 'city' parking or adaptive steering.
ABS.
ESP –Electronic stability Program, (safety)
Height and reach adjustable steering –I'd like to see all the dashboard.
Reliable cigarette lighter socket –I'd like to run a tire compressor and a phone charger.
Cigarette lighter socket works without need to run the engine.
Three rear seat, each seat to have 3 point harness (Two adult and one child/Tea flask seat).
Proper rear foot mats! (Not a carpet dinner place mat).
Flat folding rear seats –To be raised and lower one hand only.
Foot room for driver!!!!! 5 inches Space left and right of pedals Size 12(UK) 13(US) 31(JP) feet friendly.
Footrest NOT in above free space. (No Footrest at all?)
Transmission Tunnel not is above space! (FWD seems to have transmission tunnels too???)
Good knee room, I have short legs not small legs and I don't want a cubby hole above my knees.
Driver’s Knee Bag.
Good head room –I'm just under 6 feet but its all spine, No sunroof.
Sun visor to be out my face.
Proper head rests –Think Saab and Volvo NOT Nissan Mirca.
Rear head rests removable –Maintain maximum visibility.
Comfy seats –Again see Saab and Volvo.
Memory function on diagnostic tool socket –If I report an intermittent fault I want you to find it!
Good visibility outwards.
Not be over cocooned –Volvo S40 very bad for this.
Good ride quality including the back seats.
Indicators and wipers to be as quite as possible.
Flat bottomed steering wheel –more space/adjustment options.

Mirrors
Wing Mirrors Plain, Black plastic is enough no: indicators, paint, electronic adjustment. Mirrors are completely expendable.
Rear Mirror, large and rectangular shaped.

Outside
Good bumpers/Rub strips
Steel wheels.
Anti-theft wheel nuts (my money goes on tyres not alloyies.)
Good ground clearance, access to the underside of the car, clear 146+mm speed Cushions.
Mud flaps.
Access to clean wheel arches.
Paint –Paint is expendable too give me something I can touch up.
Basic windshield –Expendable item, I'd rather it be cheap to replace.
Fuel filler cap on drivers side

Windows
Manual not electric

Steering wheel to be round not, flat bottomed -I'd rather have the height and rake adjustment to help me find that perfect driving position rather than have that wierd square feeling of the British Layland cars of old

2nd the addition point or rather expansion that the Rear windscreen wiper should be full length –Renault Mégane hatchback and Ford Focus hatchback Bad for this

Honda 367

....any HONDA should fit your bill just fine...

Did you see the new 2008 US Accord yet???

is that all... …erm not just :D

Manual windscreen wipers NOT automatic -I pour hot water over the windscreens in the morning to de-frost the car and I don't want an expensive silicone wiper ripped apart or to get covered in water!

And I hoped Honda would cover most of my requirements... But I've tried to take an original approach to this specification and not think about any one car in particular. The scariest think for me is the boot I'm used to Station Wagons (/Estate cars) so a huge boot is kind of common... I guess it depends how much boot you use (but lets not get into handbag syndrome!) I was really close to buying a Volvo 850 T5 :p (200 hp 5 cylinder turbo, ‘hot’ Estate, as used by the police :o )

I’ve not seen the new 2008 US Accord. –Personally the Accord is one of my top price cars at the moment (One which I’d spend the most on). Truthfully I’ll more likely to be looking used car rather than something new and shiny. And I’ve got quite a bit reading on the Accord back to about 1993! Maybe I’ll pick up some more reading when I get that CRV test drive?

I was out looking at a couple of cars; including the New Subaru Outback with the diesel boxer engine *phoooora :P*... (pitty it's new, shiney and too bloody expensive :( and tends 19 times out of 20! to be automatic transmission) and I've come up with a few more points for concideration.

Hilights include:

Spare tyre (again)
I've had bad expierence trying to get an alloy wheel off it's steel carrier/Hub so this problem bears on my mind, second thing is that I usally have to go to work or something the next day so limping about on a space saver isn't a great idea, yes I've got a local tyre place but I'm not sure I was just what happens to be in stock... *note to self buy spare wheel from scrapyard!*
So the emergency foam combined with proper matching wheel please?

Bonnet catch...
Well I certiainly don't want something off the Renault Clio range (I swore the Mark 3 was ok was it the mark 4 that had the FAULTY plastic thing?...and it's been fixed for the mark 5) What caught my eye was the sideways catch on the mazda 6 A design aimed at trying to reduce wear in the catch? you had to shove your hand in pivot your arm around your wrist to gain the leverage to push sideways with your fingers.... ergonomically a non-starter surely!!!

Windows without frames:
I saw this on the subarus the glass is not supported on three sides!
So what happens if it's windy?
What happens if the window is smashed (does all the glass harmless fallout?)
On the Bmw minis' the electric windows always nudge the window up and down when you open and close the doors -What happens when it's frosted up? What are the wear on the window mechanism? Come on does this not sound like a really bad idea?!
