View Full Version : Windshield breakage question

My wife has a 2004 CR-V EX that has had three windshields replaced due to rock hits and there is rock damage on the 4th as I write this. This is 3 more than we have ever had on any other vehicle. On Edmund's I found a service bulletin that indicated Honda wanted pictures taken of windshields with breakage, but the local Honda dealer stated they were unaware of this request from Honda.
Is there a issue with Honda 2004 CR-V windshields that I am not aware of?

I would think that if there was a rock chip or other evidence of something hitting the windshield, there would be zero warranty coverage. Our 04 currently has a crack all the way across, but it starts right where a rock chip is... I will not bother trying to get Honda to pay for this.
I previously had a Jeep Cherokee (98) in which I went through about 6 windshields in 2 years, all due to rocks. It was simply chance and the fact that as an SUV, it had a more upright windshield.

I was not thinking of Honda reimbursing me.
I am just wondering if other CR-V owners were having the same problems and wondering why Honday put the service bulletin out if this was not a widespread issue.

GeorgeUnderstood.
I think what Honda is trying to do is ensure that dealers are not replacing windshields due to rock chips and billing Honda Corp for the repair, as a courtesy to the customer. In other words, they may not be trusting all of their dealers to do the right thing...

I am not thinking Honda needs to pay for this per se, however I do think it is odd that I need to replace my third windshield in 3 years. I too have a 2004 CR-V and now that I see this thread, I am more convinced than ever that there is something in the design that makes these cars more vulnerable to windshield dings than other models. VERY frustrating!
Of course I also have an issue with all the gravel trucks on the highways that don't use the tarps to cover the loads, but I stand as much chance of getting that issue resolved as I do having Honda admit their design is "deficient".
Oh well, at least it's only a $100 deductible.

Nothing unusual here.
Rock hits windshield, windshield breaks. Simple as that.
Why would anyone think this should be covered under a car's warranty?
Just bad luck and nothing more.

I drive about 80% highway miles... about 20,000 miles per year. Realistically, I could justify a new windshield every springtime, but I usually do it every 2 years.
Historically, Colorado uses sand instead of salt for de-icing roadways. They're using a lot of Mag-Chloride these days which may be better for windshields and hood pitting, but doesn't do anything for rust prevention.
For whatever reason we always have a lot of sand and rocks on the highways. I seem to find most of them!
My CR-V just had its 2 month birthday on Monday. I've already got a couple of little nicks on the windshield, but no stars yet. I did take a pretty hefty rock shot to the right side fender where it flares out just aft of the headlight. A tiny little dent (looks like a door ding) and a scuff/scratch. Darn it!

if you install a hood deflector, it may prevent rocks hitting your windshield.
it MAY.

"MAY" is the key term here. Last week my wife was driving to work and a stone bounced its way to the windshield and caused a nice starburst. She said it was about the size of a golf ball. I asked why she didn't get the truck info and the reply..."I didn't think about it!" The REALLY nice thing was I took it to the glass store and the guy was busy working and couldn't get me in for 3 days to do the work. He said I could go down to another store (same company different town) and they could do it right away. I go, have the work done, and they said it was NO CHARGE because I had to travel the extra distance there. SWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTT!

There is something a little fishy about a TSB for photos of just one year. If dealers are cheating, why only on the 2004? Why only CR-Vs?
I am inclined to think that there must be some problem on the 04 V that would precipitate the TSB. It could be something as simple as a bad batch of windshields. It does not sound like an act of random curiosity.

The windshield does chip but that is standard on most SUV's they have a more aerodynamically inefficient windshield meaning rocks hit at less of an angle increasing they chances of chips. My tip is to get the chips fixed I don't know what insurance you have but out here Geico in NY has a thing where they fix minor chips and dings in the windshield for free as long as its less than a few inches which is worth it because those chips can expand and cause more trouble.

My 2006 CRV is 2 1/2 years old and I've had the windshield replaced twice. Today I was sitting at a red light, it was cold out and I had the heater going and suddenly I heard a crack and watched it develop on both sides of the center. I watched it grow sitting there stunned. I now have a nice 3 foot crack across the bottom of my windshield. Nothing hit it. Could they just be defective and fragile? It was probably a big temperature difference between the outside and inside but come on. My insurance company is going to have to replace ANOTHER windshield. Thats 3 in less than 3 years.

You've now learned the same thing that everyone learns when they take a freshly clean glass out of the hot dishwasher adn immediately poor cold liquid into it. It cracks and breaks.
The rapid heating or cooling of thin glass will crack it. The temperature difference doesn't matter more than the rapid heating of the glass.
I still have the original window on my 02, in your owners manual it tells you to be careful about using the defroster or heavy heat when it's super cold outside for risk of glass breakage, but I've never actually heard of it happening yet. It must be REALLY cold where you are.
