I was having some rough idling so I put a bottle of Techron in the tank. It seems to have helped a little. I am at the end of the tank now. The directions on the bottle say to put it in every 1k miles, but should I put another bottle in now or does it make a difference? I bought the car with 30k, so I am going under the assumption that no maintenance was done.
BTW, does anyone have an estimate as to how many miles/gallons are left when the fuel light goes on on a '05? Mine goes on what seems quite a bit above the red line.

Typically you have between 1.5 & 2 gallons of gas when the light goes on, but it can very depending on how much extra you may try to "top off" the tank. As for the techron, you should only need to add about 3-4 times per year.
Since your vehicle was purchased "certified"...what exactly is the history of the fluid changes? Those are some pretty crucial things that you want done right

I did the tranny and rear diff myself within the last few weeks. I just had the brake fluid done by Honda yesterday.

Since you bought used and have no knowledge of the maintenance or fuel usage prior to purchase, I would add another bottle to the tank and fill er up. Techron is great stuff.
I would google "top tier gasoline" and then use one of the brands listed from now on. These are gasolines (or gasohols) that Toyota, Honda, GM, Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi recommend due to them having superior additive packs in them. BTW, the list may surprise you (there is one "major" that is not on there).

Techron is the best out there. I put in a bottle at every oil change. I had two cars that would not run right without "top tier gas". Put something else in it, they both would run like crud. Head down to Shell and fill-er-up, ran fine. They both really hated BP gas.

I would also recommend using Chevron gasoline, since it contains Techron.
Stay away from cheap gasolines like ARCO.

This goes for everyone....
Since you purchased used and have no service history, assume that the former owner was a complete idiot and did nothing. This means that you should go and perform all of the normal maintenance items that you are now assuming were never done in the past. In the worst case, you are simply duplicating some recent maintenance.

Anyone know why the "major" mentioned is not there? How does this list get produced...$$$$ maybe ???

I used to use Arco when I first started driving because it was so cheap. Under a dollar! As soon as I realized how much worse it made my crappy car run I switched. They don't have that stuff here.

This response is begging for someone with real proof to tell me otherwise...

Working in engineering and design for the refining industry, I know a little about how fuel is blended. The Techlor product, initially introduced in about '86 is an excellent product and was recommended by many manufacturers, mostly as a substitute for fuels that were blended without the necessary or short on, additives. Gasoline is the base product and the additives are what gives the fuel the characteristics such as shelf life, (everyone has heard of Sta-Bil) less deposits, less lacquer, etc. On shelf-live, gasoline has about 90 days tops.
Techlor was sold to Texaco, Star Enterprises (the marketer for Texaco gas) and now Motiva, when Chevron developed Techlorine. It was an improvement, next step technology. There is some danger in using any additive, in that it will break down any lacquer build-up in the tank and system, basically giving one diluted gas at the engine that has crud, for the lack of a better word, that doesn't burn well, cuts fuel mileage and will build up on plugs and valves. Watch the fuel filter if its used in older vehicles.
Using an additive isn't an alternative to peforming maintenance; I agree with 2RedVs on pulling the maint,.........however discount gas doesn't have the detergent additives in the quantity that the majors add. Over time you'll get the lacquer build-up and deposits. To add Techlor at every fill-up is a bit of overkill, every fourth-to-fifth tankful is adequate.
Suggest using a major brand of gasoline for the most part, it won't hurt to use discount gasoline when that's all that is available, or the nickles are in short supply; keep the tank above the half mark, too, less condensate, especially in cold climates. Oh, and the alcohol blends should be avoided due to lesser fuel economy, but they will displace condensate moisture in the tank.
Thanks for letting me go on.

I use Techron every oil change I don't know if it does anything but it cant hurt the car. They say to use it every 3k I got better mileage since my last oil change but that was probably due to me driving only 2 long trips on a flat interstate. I am counting it will keep the fuel system clean and prevent the need for future repairs.

Using the Techron at every oil change won't hurt and will help. I see you have an '04, so the lacquer build-up in older vehicle tanks won't be a problem for You. I use the product in most everything, and it will help fuel economy by cleaning the injectors and provide a detergent boost to the fuel. What you're doing IS good preventive maintenance.

Almost got 25 MPG since techron which is pretty good for me I am usually getting 22 on winter grade and 23-24 on warm weather.
