I *believe* it will work. However, the 99-2001 had a slightly reworked head that allows for higher a higher compression ratio which is one of the reasons why the 99-01's have 20 additional HP. As to bolting up, sure, it should work, but I do not know how the computer from a 97/98 will handle the differences.

I did some comparing of part numbers this morning between the 97-98 and 99-2001 heads.
The basic head for all 97-2001's is the same. ThEy all use the same basic valve trian components with the exception of the cams. The camshafts were changed in 99 a head from a head from a 99-2001 will bolt on. But as Red stated it is unknown how or if the ECU will react to the changes.

you should be fine. If you did a 99-00 block, you may need the ecu, but even then I doubt it. Sensors and fuel trim ect should be closeenough to work fine. The compression being higher shouldnt make an ecu difference if all else is stock. But I could be wrong. I useually modify it so much, I have to get a programable ecu, so I cant be 100% on this minor stuff.
If it was me, I would do it wi the stock ecu. Or you could do a vtec head.....

Ya I went to a pick-n-pull to get a cat for my V but apparently it is illegal to sell one in the state of california. Any way pick-n-pull is a junkyard place where all of the cars are lifted up so you can look underneath them and take whatever you want off of the cars.
But the CR-Vs are incredibly rare to find the problem is that they are still running no one want's to throw out a car that still runs. If you take the junk yard route good luck finding a CR-V.:D
