Just traded my 2001 CRV for a 2008 CRV EX-L Automatic(not Nav). How can I tell if it is 4WD or 2WD? Are they full time or as neeeded? No mention on invoice or in manual. Is there a physical feature underneath, that I could check?
Thanks.

My 2007 4WD has a sticker on the rear window. Also, you can look underneath the rear of the car to see if your CRV has a rear differential. I believe that the 2WD do not have the rear differential since there would be no reason to transfer power to the rear tires since it is a front wheel drive vehicle. Sounds like you have a 2WD version. Any other member, please let me know if I am incorrect in this assessment.

^You are correct. I noticed a sticker that has "AWD" in the back window. If you don't have a sticker that says "AWD," chances are the vehicle is not AWD. Also, the dealer should be able to answer this question. Another method is to check the VIN number. You can google and find out what each number and letter stands for.

The code in the VIN to check are:
RE3= Front Wheel Drive
RE4= Four Wheel Drive

Rear window is 4WD. Under car looks like a mini transmission at the back.
VIN number is RE4
I also understand that for 2008 only the LX model has the option of 4WD, all the other models only come in 4WD.
Now we know.
Thanks guys.

Here is a sample for the Element of the VIN#break down. But the idea is pretty much the same....but the model codes will differ for the CRV.

Not correct here in the states. LX, EX, and EX-L all have RT4WD as an option.

In Canada only LX's have the 2WD/4WD choice. All others are 4WD. US gets that choice on all models.

You bought a vehicle not knowing for sure if it was 2WD or 4WD???? Wow. :confused:
Look for the rear differential.

In US the window sticker tells you everything you need to know about the car as it came from the factory - don't they give that to you at time of sale? Also - what was the 2001 - and how did you know? I didn't think they sold 2WD in Canada...

I noticed that one of your questions remains unanswered. The RT4WD System is an "on demand" type system. It is a hydro-mechanical system housed in the rear differential housing. It senses and reacts to the front axle slip rate. When front wheel slip is detected, a clutch pack (part of the RT4WD System) is progressively engaged in proportion to the amount of front wheel slip. This clutch pack supplies torque to the rear axle/wheels as required until the difference between front and rear axle speeds (average speed) is reduced to an acceptable level (normal traction is restored). This is a brief and very incomplete description of system operation. More complete explanations are available elsewhere in the forum (use the search function) or at:
