Does anyone know why the CR-Vs sound like a stick shift when you back up? I has the stick shift whine. This is the first automatic I hear dsound like this. Is this common in Honda or is my transmission messing up?

The sound is completely normal. It has been questioned many times in the past. The explanation is the same for both MTs and ATs. Reverse uses straight cut gear teeth as opposed to helical cut teeth. The tooth engagement between straight cut gears is a line contact that takes place very quickly (all at once). Helical cut gear teeth, on the other hand engage in a sliding contact (one side of the gear face to the other or one end of the tooth to the other) which is more gradual and therefore less noisy.

Gears #9 and #10 are the primary noise makers.

I wondered about that as well. Mine makes the same noise and as Peacemaker noted it does sound like a manual transmission.
Tsmithvt, your explanations are always excellent. Thanks.
