Got a 2002 V-- 2nd generation-is this engine considered non-destructive if the timing chain goes south? Thanks

How many miles on it? I would imagine 150-200k miles would be reasonable to expect as a life-span, if not more. Dirty oil would tend to promote wear much faster on the chain than clean oil. The problem with chains is that they stretch as they get old and then get noisy.

I'm pretty sure all CRV's have an interferance engine witch is the engine that if your timing belt breaks you possibly could have engine problems.

When I bought my 02 6 months ago, I had it scheduled for it's 100,000th birthday tune up and service. The replaced all the fluids and whatnot, and were supposed to replace that stupid serpentine belt. I went to the Honda Dealership and told them it was making noise afterwards evertime I accelerated hard, and the noise would stay, it would never get better. THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT COULD BE WRONG. I drove for a while, and said... hey... wait... I left it running and opened the hood. The serpentine belt was frayed at 3 of it's 5 lines and it was just whipping all over the engine block at 500 rpm. I couldn't get it fixed till Honda ordered a new one, so I had to drive for three days like that, afraid that any moment it would just all tear off. Also, cruise control sucks on that car, it can't drive itself, so when it came to hill, it floored the gas, even if it was a small incline, and sure enough, it tore the belt even more. Luckily, I got it back home and to the dealership the next day, and they didn't charge me for parts, only one hour of labor, cause they screwed up. I recommend not lettign the belt of any car go rediculously bad, especially after that.

Two different belts the serpentine belt runs the AC,power steering alternator and if it breaks will cause no damage to your engine ,just leave you stranded. The timing belt or chain on the V engine basically runs the valves in the engine and can not be seen from the outside and if it breaks it can ruin your Honda engine. On the 2000 Rav4 I had the timing belt changed at 100 K at a cost of $480.00 Canadian,it is very labour intensive on some cars they even recommend you change your water pump at the same time as it is right there and you are already paying for the labour but if it breaks on a Toyota it will cause no damage to the engine.
