View Full Version : 5-Speed AT Trans. Grind?

I notice this every so often when the windows are down or the one time it was fairly loud.
Upon accelerating (Gentle, moderate or fast) when the transmission goes for the 1-2 upshift, there's a grind-like sound. It does not do it all the time, and it's not just when it's cold.
Thoughts?

If still under warranty, take it to the dealer.
Otherwise:
30k miles - time for at tranny fluid change. Really easy. No ramps or jacking it up needed. Just do not backflush and only use Honda AT fluid.

I'll bring it up with mum, but knowing her, it won't get done until the next oil change... Thanks, though. :) I had been planning to take it to the dealer, but when they drive the car it always smells weird afterwards...plus, my brother always takes her car. It's a matter of getting it.

hi might be the clutch pack in the rear axle this can get contaminated and create a grinding noise particularly on full locks it happened to mine and the dealer took two days to fix take it to a main dealer only

In the rear axle? This is a 2WD LX, not the AWD. And it's only on the 1-2 Upshift.

 I'd take it in for service ASAP. There should not be any noise when shifting on a low mileage V like yours.

So get this,
I took the CR-V in for the tranny crunching issue and to see if the ECU was throwing any trouble codes (The night that the car wouldn't start and idle for more than a second.).
Pull into the full service lane (Clean as hell, by the way) and walk inside. A guy walks up to me and asks if he can help me. I tell him the situation.
A.) My mum's car. I'm bringing it in for service (She's christmas shopping in my dad's truck).
B.) I explain in detail the transmission issue. Only the 1-2 upshift. It's a grinding/crunching resembling a bad synchro crunch all too well... It happens intermittently, regardless of temperature, tranny temperature, engine load, road grade, etc.. I also explain the weird one-night-stand engine disease.
First thing he does is he goes out to check the mileage. I follow him, and he just resets the SOLID Maintenance Required light. Nothing more. Just resets it. I told him I wanted them to run diagnostics to make sure it wasn't anything of importance.
So my mom picks me up, we finish up her shopping and such and I get a call to come back to the dealer.
Went in, and they tell me that they 'can't verify the problem I am having'. They claimed to have driven through a nearby sub-division and tried to get it to crunch. They also started and shut down the engine multiple times to see if it had problems starting, even though I explained to them it only happened the one night and it has been perfectly alright since.
Did they run any diagnostics...? Nope. They just told me they couldn't verify that there was any problem with the transmission and sent me on my *crunch!* way...
This made me extremely flustered, because it crunched on my way out of the parking lot... and then when I pulled into the Publix parking lot and was finding a space... then on my way home after getting off my exit. And then AGAIN when I pulled into my neighborhood! It happens at the VERY LEAST 3 times a day.. I explained all of this to them.
So I'm going to have to take the car back to them again and drive it, with a technician in the car because apparently my Honda dealer's employees are far too ignorant to operate so much as the hand brake.
I don't dislike being a bit firm, and coming off as a hard-ass bitch...but I do dislike dealing with illiterate jackasses that stand there and tell me matter-of-factly (He seriously did!) that they can't verify anything I told them!
The car is essentially brand new. Well maintained. It JUST turned over 30k on the clock this morning. There's no excuse for a car this new to have such problems, and then for the dealer to imply that I'm imagining it..?
Am I out of line in being a tad more than pissed off?

You're not out of line in the least. Here's my suggestion and something I did when I owned my Audi TT a few years ago.
I was having a very weird intermittent issue with my TT and the dealer couldn't reproduce the issue and I couldn't figure out how to reproduce the issue. I spoke with the Service Manager and explained the situation and handed him my previous work orders showing how many times I had been there for the same issue. I asked him that the next time it happened could I call and would he personally come out to my car and see it happening? He agreed to my request. So one day the problem started happening and I hopped on my cell and got him on the phone. He met me in the parking lot and finally he was able to witness the problem I was having. After that they worked on the car and fixed the issue.
My suggestion is to go into the dealership and speak calmly with the Service Manager explaining the situation. Don't accuse his people of not doing their jobs, it will only cause problems and not help in getting your CR-V repaired. Just ask him to meet you outside and go for a ride the next time you're in the area and are having the problem. I don't see why he wouldn't agree to it and it should get your CR-V repaired.
Let us know what happens.

Resurrecting an old thread here...
The crunching sound seems to have amplified in sound slightly, and is happening more often. That, and I'm not quite sure, but I was pretty shocked when I thought I heard a CV-ish axle clicking noise while turning left... No offense to Honda, but dear god...the car only has 30k and change on it!
Something that I feel rather stupid for that completely escaped me when we got the front rotors resurfaced is the brake pads. D'oh! Warped rotors = Uneven brake pad wear = rewarping of the rotors.
Needless to say, at 70mph the steering wheel vibrates. -Sigh- More of my weekend time spent on this thing. Oil, brakes, gotta' take it for new tires, need to wash it, wax it, detail the interior. I feel worn down. lol
The tires are quite amusing. I drive at a moderate clip (Which seems to return the best gas mileage in this car), but I do not corner lightly. It's an SUV, but it's handling limits were easily probed in the mountains some time ago and it's easy to keep it safe. I was taking a left turn into my friend's neighborhood tonight (Don't worry, 100% visibility) at around 45mph entry speed, then it goes steeply uphill after about 20 feet. The front end grip went south and the tires were begging me to stop.
My dear mother was actually wondering if Mugen makes firmer springs that would lower it maybe an inch or so... and I'm pushing for a Mugen cat-back system.

Wow. You went thru a set of brakes in under 30k miles? Got about 50k on the wife's 04 and I noticed when rotating the tires this weekend that they look only 1/2 worn - front and rear.
Have you over-torqued or unequally torqued the lug nuts? That is a big cause of warped rotors, not brake pads.

Read again. 34,870 is the current mileage. This is mostly a highway car. My mother brakes lightly, I brake moderately. The rotors originally warped because of my older brother who was driving to and from work in this car, and sometimes takes forever to brake.
I'm aware that over-tightening lugs can cause the rotors to warp, however, the tires were rotated twice. Once by Honda, once by my personal mechanic who is fully competent.
If your rotors warp, it eats your brake pads at an angle. If you don't replace the brake pads, the pads wear the rotors in an odd way and they warp to some degree again... This is what has happened to her car.
I'm surprised the trip up and down the NGA Mountains didn't fry her brakes..but then again, I know the rights and wrongs to keeping your brakes from toasting to a crisp in that sort of situation. Toot, toot goes my horn again. :D
The fact of the matter is, that this car has been used. Used used used used used...and it's not all been light driving. I myself, I'll admit, am slightly more rough with the car. Cornering harder, braking harder, accelerating sharply rather than like a grandmother or really stomping on it. 34,000 miles out of these sad little tires exceeded my expectations. The brakes, however...I've had brakes last longer.
I feel kind of bad for the CR-V. My mom isn't the best about caring for the appearance...she'll say she is, but she's not. There's dog hair everywhere, empty or half empty cups of Starbucks, red clay stains from careless entry and exit on the black interior plastic, sticky gunk in the cupholders and the accessories shelf, worn out floor mats over the floor mats over the carpet, the headliner has a few stain scars from carelessness and the paint has microbrasions all in several places.
Someone this past Christmas, actually, somehow missed the somewhat large Cute-Ute parked next to them and dragged along the front passenger side bumper and part of the fender trim, gouging it out. We were inside when it happened. No note, no nothing. Just damage.
What all makes this slightly neglected, malnourished and lost-puppy SUV from giving up the ghost every morning is the happy Apple sticker on the rear door, proudly displaying it's love for the superior computing platform.
Oh yeah, and me driving it, of course... :p
Yeah, all of my posts are over the top..

I took the CR-V for new tires today, at my mechanic's shop in Watkinsville.
Then I drove off to Honda in Athens.. I told the service manager that I was there for the second time for the same problem with the transmission. I also told him that the car would need to cool down for a while before the test drive, so that it'd better ensure that the transmission would grind on the 1-2 Upshift.
So I waited an hour and a half in the waiting room. When it was time, I stole a tech and got in the car. I expected the transmission to grind the moment I pulled away and it went to grab second gear. What happened? Nothing. No crunch...I tried for twenty minutes of starting and stopping to try and get it to grind. No dice. I swear, they think I'm lying about the problem.
The bottom line is, that I'm going to have to leave the car at the dealer overnight...drive my Jetta home...then come back early in the morning when it's freezing out in order to get the gearbox to spit out a crunch. If it does, the tech said they'd replace the transmission. Which would be good.. Crunching during shifting = Disaster.
More later...

Keep us posted. That is just weird for an auto tranny to make a crunching noise!

I've had my 2000 for about a month now yesterday was the first time I had a legitimate witness. I too am struggling with this mysterious grinding sound. It will happen rain or shine, uphill, downhill, puling out of the driveway etc. Yesterday, it happened when I was going uphill, and it seemed to be stuck in 3rd gear (or so my friend told me). I don't know squat about cars which would explain the hours I've been spending on this forum lol.
I have never driven it without hearing/ feeling the grind (except day 1) and when I left it for a day with my mechanic (who also sold me the POS) he said he drive it from Queens to Brooklyn and back without hearing or feeling anything out of the ordinary. (LIAR) He was also supposed to replace my windshield which has a few dents in it from being parked under the train station in between the time I decided to purchase and when I picked it up for the first time. That of course never got done. The only thing he did fix was my drivers side window which would go down but needed to be pulled up manually. (although NOW my door locks don't work) WTF??????
I've learned to deal with the squeeks and the fact that they said they can't fix my broken armrest without replacing the whole drivers seat, even the windshield...but I am terrified to take this car onto the parkway with fear that it will grind and go down from 60 to 20, or just stall out on me.
I am still under the lemon law and my boyfriends father is going to check it out for me this weekend. I'm hoping its something minor, like the IACV or a change in fluids.
