Last night as I was leaving work I came to my second stoplight. As I was waiting, the car started to shudder and idle very rough. As it was bucking and snorting, the engine light flickered on and off, but then the car recovered and seemed to be fine, especially after I pulled away from the stoplight. Last night was the coldest night so far at around 25 degrees. I have not had cold weather problems previously, so I'm not sure what this could be. Any thoughts?

No check engine light? Maybe just a hiccup. If you have the extended warranty, just call teh dealer and see what the service dept says.
Can you pull a spark plug or 2 and see what they look like?

I live in Alaska, own a 2004 CR-V with about 50,000 miles on it. I am by no means an auto expert and so this is an anecdote in search of some answers. The engine light came on and stayed on when we were travelling. In was the middle of winter, the outside temperature was about -45 degrees F (probably more with windchill). About 75 miles after the light came on, the engine started to "knock" and threatened to stall at 3000 rpm or more. Managed to get to Fairbanks where we heard horror stories from other motorists involving the engine light warning followed by blown oil filter/valve o-rings and gaskets. That night the battery "died" in the cold and the car had to be jump started. Well, the engine light was not on any more and we hit the road again - no problems, engine was fine. However, about 200 miles into the trip (temperatures still around -50 degrees F), the engine light came on again, the "3000 rpm limit knocking" set in and very shortly, the oil light started flashing. After 200 miles worth of towing, the mechanic said that the oil filter o-ring and the gasket were shot and replaced them. The car appears to be fine now although it smells like *&*% from all the oil that spurted out. Interestingly, my old 1991 Honda Civic LX brought safely through the ALCAN in sub-zero temeperatures with absolutely no problems. The mechanic said something about newer cars having VTECH engines which made them more prone to cold wetaher problems.
I am interested in what the other forum users have to offer in terms of some explanation. Thanks!

Sounds like a miss fire. Check the coils on each spark plug. Chances are one coil is not working properly causing a miss fire. Also check or change the spark plugs while you are in there.

Usually a flashing check engine light is caused by a miss fire. Take the car to a parts store (Advance, Auto Zone, NAPA.....) and have them pull the code from the computer by reading the OBD II trouble code. This code will narrow down the problem for you.

Good Luck. Probably not a huge problem. It is a Honda after all.

Check for corrosion of coil connection to spark plug.

Yes.........I got the same reply from Autozone.........they don't check codes anymore.

2004 CR-V, 117,000 miles
2 weeks ago, light came on but no problems noted, light went out by itself an hour later.
Sunday, temp in the 70's, started and the idle was very high and surging up and down. Stopped for dinner, started back up, no problem and no problem last 2 days. Has been great up to this point.
So it is not cold like Alaska, problably not a coil since it went away, ,not plugs because they would not increase the idle, O2 sensor will keep the engine light on. Other suggestions?
