grade logic shifting

I hoping someone knows how to change the programming or if the dealer can change the programming of grade logic shifting. I have a 98 crv ex and I bought it last fall. It is my wifes crv. when I first drove it I noticed it does not shift on a hill. I think is wastes fuel the way it is programmed though. It just does not shift on hills and there is a lot of hills around here. Maybe it is programmed for the best results because it is under powered. Anyway does anyone know if it can be reprogrammed to operate more efficiently. Thanks:eek:

I don't know whether it can be re-programmed or not, but you may not be too happy with the results if it can. My previous vechicle would go up some of the hills around here in Pittsburgh constantly downshifting and up-shifting then back down. Back and forth. My CR-V (a 2007 with a good bit more power than your 98) goes up those hills with no problem with none of up/down business. The CR-V does not have the power of my previous car, but does have a better transmission.

What I don't like about grade logic control is when it holds a low gear going down a hill.

dont fix it if it aint broke.

you will probably mess something up if you reprogram it.
you can try to fool the computer/tranny into shifting. in my 07, when im going up a hill - it will hold it in one gear, but sometimes the hill is not that steep and i know the car have enough power so what i do is back off the gas pedal a bit and it will shift into higher gear and i get on the gas again. :D

The grade logic control bothers me too. Since my town (Tujunga, California) is at the foot of a mountain range, the whole town is on a slope. If you are going north, you are going up hill. In many areas, you are also going up or down hill going east or west too. The inclines are not steep. Most of the time, the transmission stays in a lower gear with a lot of RPM's. I am almost afraid this may damage something. I have had cars without grade logic control here and they didn't have any problems on inclines. They didn't constantly shift between gears as you would expect to happen without grade logic control. I could see the need to stay in a lower gear if it was a really long, steep grade like the type where you see signs that say "Turn off AC to avoid overheating next 10 miles" (those who live in the west are familiar with these signs). I know there could problems with the transmission shifting up and down in a situation like that without the grade logic control, but not on very slight inclines, however, I like the grade logic control when it helps to slow the car when coming down out of the mountains. I think it helps to save the brakes. Since I go to the mountains A LOT, I tend to wear out my brakes fast.

Naturehut, don't know your year and model, but if it is holding low gear on slight inclines, I think you should take it in and have it checked. I would have to say that going uphill mine works very well.

We don't the extreme long grades that you have out west but we have hill after hill and the logic control going down our hill holds you back and you lose the momentum for going up the next hill. On long grades, I would probably like it also but around here I find the down hill action to be irritatiing.

I will probably mention it next time I take it in for an oil change. I thought it was normal because I had the same car a few years ago (2001 CRV) and it acted the same way. I was devastated when it got repossessed. It was like loosing a family member. I made it my goal to get another one.

You can probably change the shift points but messing around with the ECU is a sure fire way to wear out other important parts of the vehicle my advice is to get to a higher than normal speed then back off on the throttle, also cruise control could help.
